Magnificent Mulch, Rose and Fig Questions & all the Usual Garden Goodness #Podcast S02 Ep06
I don’t have a green house, should I put them on a sunny windowsill, none sunny windowsill, outside or anywhere in the house? Thank you.
Love this. watching from a hot and humid Durban,SA. I started with a handful of agapanthus about 10 years ago, my garden now has about 250. That's not counting the ones given to family and friends. Fortunately, our winters are not severe so these plants flourish all year round.
Jealous of your weather right now - as my view through the window is a damp and dreary Nottingham! -Sean
Cheers Martin great advice as usual 😊
Very welcome! -Sean
Spot On ! Thank you for a great video.🎉
Thanks for watching! -Sean
Thank you for this, about to order my first 6 plug plants from Dibleys and can’t wait for the March delivery. I always remember a huge Strep on my grandmas window and loved it as a child. Is it true they prefer shallow pots? Hers were certainly all on short planters.
Have fun growing them. Yes, they don’t need a deep pot. You’ll get growing instructions with the plants. Feel free to mention you’ve see the video when you order. Martin
@ Will do and thank you for the advice 😊
Coincidentally just been watching an article about three cornered leek which is grass like (but invasive) and delicious in 'leek' and potato soup etc.
I couldn't get the vision of a tricorn hat out of my head then! -Sean
Poor Martin. I thought you'd been playing American Football. When you coming over to Bluesky?
I might give it a go.
Great video thanks the recent storms in Cornwall have made my hedges lean oleria so I’m going to dig them out and reposition them 👍🫶
hope it goes well! -Sean
Good, informative video! Have a wonderful day! 🌸
Thank you! You too! -Sean
What time of year is best to prune a red currant bush, in a northern maritime climate with winter temperatures rarely below +15F or even +20F, last frost date late March or early April.?
The short answer is, about now! - the long answer is coming on the next episode of the podcast :) -Sean
We’ve been to the Hampton court and Chelsea flower shows for years and been members…. The annoying thing is you pay over the top to attend these shows, the sign posts are not enough for directions. And if we buy a ticket we should get a show map included, not buy an over priced catalogue of advertisements to get one! Sorry we feel we’re being ripped off!
Martin will pass this on at his next committee meeting - thanks for watching/listening! -Sean
I see you have ivy growing up your tree - does this damage the tree? I have a variegated type growing through from a neighbour and climbing up my sambucus. I was wondering if I should cut it off at the bottom so it doesn’t completely engulf it?
Still waiting for the garden tour 😞
Will do in spring as the garden wakes up and we do a little more planting
Thanks for that. I have avoided the garden for too long due to the weather!!! But I need to get going. May I ask if you have an opinion about lily of the valley? I bought some bulbs and then read that they are invasive. Should I avoid them?
I love lily of the valley. They can spread in some soils but you can control their growth.
I was just wondering about this the other day so thanks!
Happy to help! Thanks for watching! -Sean
my hellebores have already flowered, I live in Tuscany, Lucca
what a wonderful part of the world! - ciao! -Sean
Thank you. Excellent explanation
Glad it was helpful!
how old is that black currant? It looks amazing!!!
I thins it’s 10-12 years old
I love your podcast, reminds me of my homeland! We visited (from Breezy Point NY) in November, moseying up the country visiting family and friends. Landed lhr and flew back from Aberdeen. Time was so tight we didn't get to see any gardens you talk of.😢 Back at the beach we again enjoy the info, (will prune our wisteria after this polar blast leaves) the fun and laughter and accents!!! Thank you❤
Thank you and hope you had a good visit to the UK. Martin
Good morning and thank you for sharing😊
You are welcome :)
So thats what the sun looks like! Thanks for taking us on tour. Enjoyed the gardens 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
The was quite an education, it made me realise that I really had no grasp of how the job should be done. I’m very grateful, thank you👍
You're welcome! Fresh videos every Thursday and podcasts each Sunday, subscribe and never miss a thing! -Sean
If you want to see how this bulb grew, check out this episode of the podcast where we show the bulb several weeks later: ruclips.net/video/rMiJSSsEPgo/видео.html -Sean
Sowing densely doesn't cause fungal disease at all. To prevent disease, use a soil-less mix. No need for any compost or fertilizer. The seeds have the energy within them to get them to the first 3 leave stage, then transplant them out. I would have sowed that whole seed packet into that little tray
Certainly in my experience sowing thickly can lead to overcrowding, leggy seedling and more chance of damping off, but sowing thickly works for you. Would be interested to hear what soil-less mix you use. Thanks Martin
Thank you for sharing this
You are so welcome, as I've mentioned in other comments, it's been great to get some different plants on to P&T, and Martin and Jill loved their visit 'down under' :) -Sean
Thanks. I just pruned my redcurrant and got about 50 good cuttings so I’ll follow this advice to grow
Excellent stuff - good luck! -Sean
thank you
You're welcome, it's great to get anything plant-related out there on RUclips and we especially enjoyed making our Australian Tour series :) -Sean
A great garden Iwill be visiting 🎉🎉🎉
it is great! - Thanks for the comment -Sean
Do not prune the tips of a "basitone" plant. Their growing hormones are in the base, not in the tips. Cut the entire branchs completly at the base. Remoove 20-30% of the branchs every year so that you'll never have bottoms older than 3-5years, up to 50% if it's old and never been pruned so that in 2 years everything will be renewed, then you can go with 20%/year.
Beautiful! 🌸
Thank you! 😊we mentioned your comment in our latest podcast -Sean
Lovely video. I remember watching Martin's segments on EMT when I was a kid. I also remember reading him in my Grandad's GN back when it was a newspaper. I actually got my picture in one edition when I was about 5 and they came to the Springfield Flower Show near Spalding. Sadly that show no longer exists but I can still recall the fragrance of the bulbs in the marquees!
This is lovely to hear! I read it out to Martin during the recording of the latest recording of the podcast (series 2, episode 18, out this coming Sunday) - many thanks for telling us and thanks for your support! - Happy gardening -Sean
@@PotsTrowels Thanks for the videos. Look forward to the next podcast!
Wonderful content from a wonderful group of people. Honestly with everything going on in the world, it’s stuff like this that gives us hope!
Thanks so much, that means a lot to us! -Sean
Love this 😊thanks for sharing
Aw many thanks, all the best for the new year! -Sean
I LOVE streps! And "Falling stars" is a favorite! It's a very profuse bloomer! I found one on ebay as I am in the U.S., I wish Dibley's would sell to the U.S., they're varieties are hard to find here. It's a shame.
Yes, I guess plants crossing borders is difficult - you'll have to come and visit! -Sean
Just love this channel. Hi we’ve got 2 limelight’s can they be pruned lower say to 6” from the ground. Ours are about 15 years old and getting woody… Keep the vids going …just love em! 🤓
That's great to hear - sorry for the delayed response - catching up after Christmas! -Sean
HAPPY NEW YEAR Martin Jill & Sean lv Irene 😘
Thanks Irene, to you too! -Sean
Thank you so much for the podcasts.. like you said there’s always something to do. I can’t wait to get on my fence before the clematis get o it… I’ll stain it, also the shed, oil my tools clean pots and plant labels … there’s so much to do! Can’t wait to retire. Happy new you to you all! B🤓
Happy New Year to you too! -Sean
You don't slice away the enlarged basal plate ?
I mentioned this comment in our podcast and we discussed it - short answer is that Martin says he doesn't remove the basal plate (you can also see how it's grown as we show the very bulb in the video): ruclips.net/video/rMiJSSsEPgo/видео.html
Can I join the queue to work in the nursery!
❤ love you all
Many thanks! Have a peaceful festive season! -Sean
Happy holidays!😊
Same to you! Thanks for your continued support, hope you manage a restful break! -Sean

Good morning all. I’ve got some small agapanthus 1 year old which are now now trying to spirit the plastic pots. You can see the roots out the bottom and the small pots 3” are being deformed all around the sides. The question is when should I repot them now or in the spring. Thanks for all the great info B🤓
Hey @bbr9707 thanks for the kind words! - we've discussed this question in our podcast - (assuming you're in the northern hemisphere) the short answer is don't do it now, wait til Spring - here's the podcast episode: ruclips.net/video/rMiJSSsEPgo/видео.html
Thank you for this video info.. Ive been out and bought a root ball xmas tree after following your advice..so pleased i found you on you tube ... love all this advice 🌼 🌸
Amazing! Glad we could help and thanks for listening! -Sean
You won't get an y peat compost next year
Yes we had a discussion about this on the podcast, though the date has slipped I seem to remember -Sean
No disrespect to the farmer, but this peat free stuff is rubbish for young plants and seed. I'm staying with peat for seed and young plants. The fibres are so bad not even plants or roots can get through.
Not all peat free is made like the stuff in our video sadly, if you try PlantGrow I think you'd be pleasantly surprised -Sean
Brilliant
Thanks for watching! -Sean
Great, hopefully my next Poinsettia will last longer , after watching this video 👌🏻
I hope so too! More info on seasonal houseplants in our latest podcast episode: ruclips.net/video/F8Ne1mwsf5g/видео.html - Fresh videos Year-round every Thursday and a podcast on Sundays, subscribe and never miss a thing! -Sean
