Welcome to the The Next Season. I am Doug Srofe. We all have seasons in our lives and I have started mine bringing the Next Season to unloved, used and abused furniture while at the same time hoping to be an inspiration to other people starting their Next Season in life and for them to be an inspiration to me. Follow along on the journey.
Sometimes Just Keeping it Simple Works Best
A client of mine gave me this six drawer children's dresser made by Pali. I decided to just keep this simple and it turned out to be simple elegance. And now is is the first dresser for a brand new baby girl.

I bought this seven drawer dresser off of Facebook marketplace with the intention of refinishing it in a certain way. Kind of an experiment that went south, so to speak. Neighbor down the street gave me this Amish dining room table as he was building his own. It wasn't in bad shape except for the kids having carved their names into the table top. Fixing a paint sprayer disaster

I am in the middle of refinishing an Amish built dining room table. I needed to spray the chairs and table base in a black paint. Spraying the chairs turned out to be a disaster. See what I did to fix it and provide a flawless finish.

Oak Dresser Tan Wash Makeover
Просмотров 8 тыс.5 месяцев назад
This solid oak, seven drawer dresser came to me from an unlikely source - my wife's ex-husband. So no, all the ex's do not live in Texas. But hey, it was free so why not. It was in pretty good shape and all scratches and small dings could be sanded out. So I decided to do a tan wash. So follow along and let's see how this turned out

Did you have tannins or bleed through when you sanded the wood? also great job on this video! thanks so much
No - none at all.
Absolutely fablous again, great work.
Thank you so much.
Hi Doug, what a fantastic outcome. Absolutely love the two tone colors,. You're a great teacher on tips on how to recover from the little hiccups. Love your work. Cheers from Ireland 🇮🇪🇮🇪
Thank you. I finally sold this yesterday.
I was shocked to see you spraying without a mask. Respirators are very important for your lung health
I will be following bc I have furniture I need to be refinishing.
Well let me know if you have any questions and I will be glad to help you. I try to show the good, bad, and ugly because there are usually issues on most refinishing projects. But with some patience and experience. they can all turn out good. I am finding it is a continual learning process, which is what I like.
Lovely! You are a good teacher.
Weill thank you very much.
Looking at the way your project turned out, i think I'm going to do the same thing. Its gorgeous! And the problem with the pulls, i never heard of having two different sizes on the same piece, unless part of them were knobs, only one hole. I will certainly learn from your discovery, though, and thank you! I loved the dresser!😊
Thank you. I am glad it was helpful to you. Never occurred to me there would be two size pulls. I will never make that assumption again. Again, thanks for watching.
The piece turned out great, I really like it! However....why are you sanding and spray painting without a respirator? Very dangerous for your lungs.
You caught me!. Sometimes I just get caught up in what I am doing and forget. But you are right, I should have had it on.
Everything is informative and great except the music which is distracting and annoying. Just your voice narrating seems so much better. (FYI).
Thanks for the insight.
Beautiful!!! Have a maple bedroom set to refinish from the 50's. Will see if I can do something similar. It was my parents' furniture. Thank you. Just lovely❤
Well when you start, I would be glad to answer any questions for you.
@@Doug.TheNextSeason Thank you so much!
Wow looks identical to the PB dresser
That was the intent. Not as much work as I thought it would be.
I liked the result a lot. I have found that for me I need to use 3 colours: base coat, glaze and 3rd colour added with a fan brush and dabbed off with a soft cloth. One can use any colour for the faux wood look. I have even done it with aged white, dusty pink and grey. If I want to create driftwood, I use aged white as a base coat, thereafter use a smokey grey glaze, and as a final colour I add rusty brown with a fan brush . The possibilities are endless. You can create any colour combitation.
Thanks for tips. I am glad you enjoyed it.
Very inspiring to try something new! Easy to follow with easy instructions. Looks fantastic!
Thanks - glad you enjoyed it.
It turned out beautiful !!!
Thank you
Just beautiful❤Great job and thank you!!!
Thank yuo
@@Doug.TheNextSeason welcome!
@@Doug.TheNextSeasonHi Doug, I'm a little confused, did you sand the whole piece? And if so, did you just scuff sand it or did you remove everything?
Turned out amazing! 👏
Thank you so much.
Fabulous! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching.
Finally someone I can follow. No crap, just showing technique. My favorite part was where you said you couldn’t read what the Emerald paint can said. I was like “Same!” 😂 I was also wondering. What do you think of mixing the last paint with, maybe, 1:2 parts water and mist it on? I wonder if it would give it a cool effect?
"What do you think of mixing the last paint with, maybe, 1:2 parts water and mist it on? I wonder if it would give it a cool effect?" Possibly. I am getting ready to do a black dresser in the same Sausalito style but using a Smokey Grey glaze from General Finishes. In practicing on a scrap piece of wood. I am finding this glaze acts differently than the Rust-Oleum glaze. Shorter working time. I am having to use a misting bottle to keep it wet until until I get the effect I want. I have seen some people use an extender, but I don't have any. And this glaze does not seem to come off as easy using the deck brush as the glaze did in this project. Will see how it turns out. Just primed it this morning. Thanks for watching.
You did everything right until you got to the white washing. You just needed to apply a stain first, let it dry, then apply a liming wax or white wash and rub it into the grain. That way, the dresser would have a darker stain, so the white washed grain would pop. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the tip. I will have to try that the next time. What color of a stain are you suggesting?
This looks really wonderful! And I like the subtle tonal contrast that dry brushing the white paint added. I’m not surprised it sold quickly! 😊🙌
Thanks. This is one of my favs. I am getting ready to refinish a dresser in black with a smokey grey glaze. I have been practicing on same woods scraps so I can figure out how to get the look I like.
My heart sank when the pull was wrong, we’ve all done that one time!! 2.5 pulls are a bear to find locally anyways. Nice job, it turned out nicely.
You think your heart sank. I also had some choice words to say. But it all worked out. Thanks for watching.
Tyrned out very nice! Greetings from a real Blue Jays fan--I love them even when it's not a winning season. Strange to see all the young talent now. There's always next year LOL!
Thanks for the comment. Big changes coming to Toronto for sure.
Sir, you sprayed the finish coats with drawers still in---so after all your nice work--that is likely to be evident when drawers are opened. Really enjoyed the video otherwise. Oh, and many people who are boycotting DB paints may not like that you use that product.
You are right. Not shown or discussed in the video, but I had to go back and apply final coats with a brush to those places the sprayer couldn't hit. I am still undecided about spraying with drawers in. If I take them out, then I have a lot of masking off to day to catch overspray. If I leave them in, then i have to go back and apply paint/topcoat by hand. But, a good observation on your part. Thank you for watching. As far as DB goes, I was unaware of anything going on since I am not connected or compensated from them in any way. I did just look it up. Very disappointing. Thank you for making me aware.
Beautiful! The 4:1 ratio looks perfect.
Thank you. Yes it worked out well.
I like it!
Well thank you but I don't think buyers agree with you; including my wife! I have just redone it and will post it for sale again in a couple of days. This time I hope it sells. So far it is a flop. My first one. But thank you for watching. I appreciate it.
I’m in Texas and just started furniture flipping. We bought a small portable air conditioner and have our painting area closed off with drop cloths and shower curtain rings. That little area gets cool enough to work in now. We vented the outgoing air with a hole cut in a board. The board runs the entire length of the garage door so we just shut the garage door flush to the board.
I wish I could do something like that but can't so my fan is all I got. Thanks for watching.
Gorgeous ❤
Thank you so much
Very nice! I love the modern look.
Thank you very much.
You did a good job but....making knotty pine look good id nearly impossible. Hope you sell it!
Well it hasn't sold yet. I am going to leave it for a while and if it doesn't see, then I may just paint it black. Black sells well. Thanks for the comment.
Lovely 😊
Thank you so much.
New subscriber here. I love the transformation on this! Those paint wash techniques work really well and look great! :)
Thanks for the comment and for subscribing. This is my favorite so far. My wife wanted to keep it but I said we can't make any money if we keep everything I refinish. Thanks again.
I'm happy to be one of your first subscribers! It's great to see new entries from someone in my generation, too. I feel for your wife though to not get to keep the piece, I would want to keep it also lol. I had to chuckle about the 2.5 inch pulls, having torn my hair out trying to find something workable for my projects in that size also. I think you've done beautiful work here and your video is very nicely done. You have a particularly pleasant speaking voice (this matters more than many people seem to know) and did a great job explaining and showing lots of good details (for instance, revamping that base, sanding with a paper bag or reusing takeout containers). The corny song in the beginning was a fun touch, too. If you are open to a few well intentioned suggestions please let me know :)
I really appreciate the comments.
Gorgeous 😊
Thank you very much.
Why do most of you people constantly move the camera during the reveal, you never get a true view of the finished product. Also for a 22 min. video, the reveal was way too short.
Sorry for not replying sooner. Thanks for the insight. I certainly will take that into consideration.
I did the exact same thing when I refinished my dresser. Never even thought that the pulls would be different sizes!😂😂😂
Live and learn. Thanks for watching..
