Guarulhos - Brazilian Food, trying the legendary Prato Feito! (Part 2)
This was my last day in Brazil on my South American trip of 2024 before I flew back to the UK. I went to a café called Lanchonete Pontes in Guarulhos and had a traditional Brazilian lunch, the famous Prato Feito aka Prato Comercial. This mainly consists of rice, beans, meat, salad, farofa and some kind of meat, in this case beef. This is exactly the kind of meal that I like when I go to Brazil as it is so flavoursome and hearty.
I was sad to say goodbye to South America after my whistle-stop tour in just 19 days! But it was really interesting getting to know the fascinating city of Guarulhos in more detail as opposed to just passing through it on the way to the airport. It really is an in...

Guarulhos is a fascinating city, and one that I have long been curious to get to know. It is a world famous place for its international airport, but I was interested to find out that it had a populations of 1.3 million people meaning that it is a very big place. Although it is right next to São Paulo, it is a city in its own right with its own council and importantly its own character. It was g...

San Isidro is a beautiful part of Lima and it was also the area where I was staying in, for my trip to the Peruvian capital. I started off my tour at the Parque Olivar which is a very tranquil and calm city park that used to be a farm. It seemed that San Isidro is a relatively well to do part of the city, judging by the houses around the park. I then took at the small shopping centre called El ...

At La Campesina restaurant in Lima's city centre I had an authentic Peruvian lunch! Peruvian food is legendary so it was great to finally have a proper meal where I could try all the different aspects of this cuisine, and it did not disappoint! Incredibly fresh and flavoursome food and drink at reasonable prices. After my cafe con leche I walked onto the Plaza Mayor or the Plaza de Armas, Lima'...

Lima is a city I had long wanted to visit, so when I found out that I could fly direct from Brasília, I took my chance! What a beautiful and fascinating city, and incredibly vibrant place with a real buzz! I started off at the Plaza San Martín (St Martin's Square), walked down the Jirón de la Unión, (the main pedestrianised shopping street) and ended up having lunch at a charming restaurant cal...

Your Portuguese is very good William, Realy enjoy your vlogs
I Love this plate ! It's also called "Prato feito", "Executivo" and "A La Minuta" depending where you are. But the Bakery in São Paulo known as "Padoca" has the best PF in Brazil
That's the place I was born and lived until age of 16, you're very kind sir and have a good portuguese.
Great video.
You should have gone to Jardim Botânico, Museu Mariano Procópio and Ufjf campus (it´s beautiful there). JF is an important city on that region, people from a lot of towns commute to there for many reasons, it´s also known as a city of students.
I really enjoyed visiting JF, I would like to go back there again! I actually did visit the UFJF campus with a friend of mine and it was very beautiful. (I didn't film it however). I can imagine it is an awesome place to be a student, in such beautiful surroundings. I also did visit the Museu Mariano Procópio but it was closed. I think I went there on the wrong day. Jadim Botanico I will have to save for my next visit. Thanks for the suggestions! Yes I got the impression that JF was an important place, especially with its proximity to Rio de Janeiro as well. 👍
Your portuguese is so good that I thought you were a brazilian talking in portuguese. But your native english threw me off. I really like when foreigners appreciate our food. Even the most humble dish is very tasty and healthy. That's what I love the most in Brazil.
Thank you, that's very kind of you but I'm still learning! I think you have to be able to speak some Portuguese in Brazil or you won't be able to experience the real culture there. Agree about the food it's incredible and very diverse in flavours.
I'm at about 2 minutes into your video, and I doubt you'll be able to eat it all. It's too much food. Edit: I stand corrected.
Haha, exactly Pedro! I wouldn't leave any of that good Brazilian food! That was a proper lunch!
Lisburn is my favourite place ever in northern ireland
That's awesome I can see why!
ja ja nice..!! i see you eating in restaurant popular... ?? (barrio) and not in place gourmet !! you will see difference in quantity and price !!
Those are the types of places that I prefer! The quality was excellent at La Campesina. 👍
Is there still radioactive radiation in there?
I don't think so... or at least I didn't see any!
Bem-vindo a nossa cidade 🙂
A cultura do interior e acolhedora e simpática. Gostei bastante! 👍
Welcome William
Thank you Joao!
Inka Kola is the only Cola in the world that tops the country's market OVER Coca Cola. Coca Cola still doen's beat Inka Cola in Peru. So if you can't beat them, join them!! I'm a transplant living in the US and we do have Inka Cola here in specialty markets, but its becoming more and more popular that you can find it in mainstream markets.
That's very cool that you can get Inca Kola in The US now. What part of the US are you in? I think my friend from Chile said you can buy it there also.
I like Goiania a lot.
Me too! 👍
Cheers. I’m glad you like it !!
Thank you, it was awesome!
Excelente video William. Bienvenido siempre a mi hermoso país ☺️ Saludos desde Lima, Perú.
Muchas gracias Joao Alejandro! Soy agradecido!
Great trip !!!
It was indeed! Thank you!
Hi William, just saw your video... congrats! Just to clarify, Inca Kola is the most drank soda in Peru. Coca Cola tried to beat it for decades, but couldn't. So Coca Cola bought Inca Kola in 1999
Thank you very much! That's very cool about Inca Kola, I can see why so many people in Peru like it! It's a familiar marketing strategy from CC to buy out smaller brands. I hope it has stayed the same since they bought it!
Yes correct peru has a strong Chinese influence, 1 million desendants estimated, when African slavery was abolished in 1853 already peru being a republic started to replace slaves with imported Chinese workers, this is the time of the gold rush in the USA, many where brought with dodgy working contracts to build the railways (that sadly we discontinued) and also to extract guano that was the n.1 commodity export by far being the UK the bigest buyer given guano a potent fertilizer fueled the agriculture boom in England during the Industrial Revolution multiplying productivity by 2-3 times…..look for John Thomas north , the “nitrate king”, there’s a book with the same name, he bought many Chinese workers
Very interesting history of multi cultural Peru there Victor thanks for sharing that. I had no idea that the UK had so much business with Peru in the past! It's great that the Chinese influence has created a kind of hybrid cuisine in Peru, it certainly has very interesting flavours. Also interesting that Peru abolished slavery in 1853 some 35 years before Brazil! Thanks also for the book recommendation I'll look it up. 👍
@ Hi William, you know the bigest tragedy of peru as a republic was the war with Chile from 1879-1884 precisely a war for those rich nitrate provinces that fuelled agriculture in Europe, Bolivia also lost its access to the ocean in that war, some historians say Queen Victoria was right behind the geopolitics of that war taking sides with Chile that was its ally providing security for the straight a Magallanes on the south tip of South America for sea routes to its colonies around the globe. If interested in the subject look for the “ten cents war” from Bruce W Farcau, brilliantly writen for my taste
@@victorsanchez4351 Hi Victor, that's really interesting, you obviously have an interest in history like me! I have watched a few videos online about the conflict and I did visit a boat in Santiago that was part of the war I think (back in 2018). But in fact I have been looking for a book about it, so that is amazing to get this recommendation and I will definitely look it up. Thank you. I had no idea Queen Victoria was involved! Yes it must have been a challenge for Bolivia to lose its ocean access. I can imagine that it was also hard for Peru to recover from that. I imagine the football matches between the 2 countries are quite a heated affair nowadays! 😜
I lived there is awesome safe
Great! Yes I felt safe in Uberlandia too!
FALTO COMER POLLO A LA BRASA EN EL NORKIS
Pues sí, es la verdad! La próxima vez!
Wait, now is probably part of the Coca Cola company, but it used to be own by a family for many , many years. I believe was Lindley Family.
Very interesting stuff! 👍
We try to survive our traffic, but apart from that Lima is entertaining.
I see what you mean! The traffic is quite hairy in Lima, but still a very cool city.
Hiya did you noticed we still have many 70s style small shops in peru ? Peru is the country of the small entrepreneur.
Hiya did you noticed we still have many UKs 70s style small shops in peru ? Peru is the country of the small entrepreneur.
Yes I did notice that, that must be good for the economy. And a lot of old cars as well! Some of the car models I hadn't seen in decades!
@ hehehe yes we have quite a few old bangers on the roads, I heard they pay good money in Europe for VW Beatles specially those made in Germany, also old Land Rover jeeps
@@victorsanchez4351 Yeah man those cars are considered to be vintage classics if they are in good condition! I remember seeing a Volvo estate 960 in Lima, so stylish and one I haven't seen for years. I actually think it's cool to be honest as all the car in the UK newish and the most look the same. The old bangers have the character!
@@williamgafrost hi yes there is a story with Volvo, during the rule of the general Velazco back in the 70s he made a deal with the sweeds to assemble Volvo lorries in Lima and in the band wagon the Volvo cars where allowed too, there was no free market during that pro soviet military junta, democracy returned in 1980 and soon after the Volvo plant went too
@@victorsanchez4351 That's really interesting Victor! No wonder there are so many Volvos still in Lima!
Hi that humid mist hiting your face we call it “GARÚA” it’s the fog that could not reach the sky to form low claud, condensation makes it fall like a drizzle rain enough to moisture skin and hair jeje
That's good to know! It was a new thing for me to experience, I actually kind of liked it. I guess the locals are used to it though!
Hi on the Atlantic side in Brazil at Limas same latitude is the city of Recife which is a very hot jungle inferno, Lima is lucky to have moderate weather thanks to the towering high Andes Mountains and the cold humbolt sea current coming from Antártica , a bit weird with fogs and virtually no rainfall, although in the last years were getting some freak summer shower rains, luckily they are short but if trend continues we’ll be in trouble in Lima because the city has no drainage on the roads for rain 🌧️ I think peruvian weathers are more suited for an Englishman jejeje 😅
That's a really interesting point Victor I never considered that it was on the same latitude as Recife in Brazil! You're right they have a completely different climate there. The mountains play a big role in the climate I suppose in Chile as well. Very interesting stuff and shows the incredible diversity of the geography in South America.
@@williamgafrost Hiya William ….also ocean temperature at Limas latitude is 5-7 Celcius degrees less than on the Atlantic side and this is vital to have a rich sea dense with fitoplancton that feeds many small fish species who feed the bigger fishes, a lot ends up as ceviche of course hehehe
@@victorsanchez4351 That's very interesting and good for those countries on the Pacific coastline. Oh so that's where all the ceviche comes from! 😜
Comida rica y personal amable!
Manjar blanco is the filling of that “churro” is the Peruvian version of dulce de leche 🥰 … loved your videos, William! I’m so glad you had a good experience in Peru 🇵🇪 ❤ and I hope you go back.
Thank you Claudia! Yes I had a great time in Peru and am very glad that I went there! The Churro was delicious! I thought manger blanco was a type of blancmange, as we call it here but now you mention it, it did taste like dulce de leche!
So, what you had as an appetizer it’s called “tequeños” they are originally from Venezuela but that’s the Peruvian version, they use a different dough. Love it.
Oh right that's cool, thanks for letting me know Claudia! They were really good actually, simple but good. Peruvian food is very diverse.
Hello William, a nice video!!!
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it!
❤❤❤❤😍 I’m from San Isidro
tú no eres de carabayllo?
Looks nice there And those trees look like olive trees. I think I'll have a ride over there sometime. Cheers mate.
Lima is fantastic mate, I highly recommend it! Yes they are olive trees that were planted in the Spanish colonial times, 400 years old apparently! Thank you mate and take care.
So wonderful to hear someone that likes my country. I adore it!! 😂❤
It is a very cool country Bianca! I liked it a lot! 👍
You did well. The average tourist doesn’t make it out to the Olive tree park. Really a unique part of Lima.
Thank you! I always try to get off the beaten track! Yes what a stunning park, incredibly beautiful spot. I found the whole neighbourhood interesting.
Better is "Chicha morada" or "Emoliente" cold or hot, more nutritious and without so much sugar.
Thank you for the recommendations I'll have a look out for those next time I'm in Peru!
Best dublin district, love sandymount ❤
I also loved it and can't wait to return when I get the chance!
Inca Kola has a wonderful taste is not like jelly
Inka Kola is really a fantastic soda
I agree it's delicious stuff, I just wish I could buy it here in the UK!
Hi, William Britions probably never heard of fellow British family in Lima. English: Joseph Robinson Lindley, an English immigrant, created Inca Kola in Lima, Peru in 1935. Lindley and his wife Martha moved to Lima in 1910 and founded a bottling company. Battle of Inca Kola vs Pasteurina (yellow soda). Pasteurine was popular until Inca Kola won the battle. Pasteurina closed its business around the 1990s. Spanish: Joseph Robinson Lindley, un inmigrante inglés, creó Inca Kola en Lima, Perú en 1935. That's really interesting! Thank you for sharing that history soft drinks in Peru. That's very cool that it was a British family who started the company. It really has stood the test of time as it's now 90 years old! Never heard of Pasteurina but I'll look it up. Thanks again, fascinating stuff!

Hi William I lives in NY/ USA but I born in Lima/ Peru, I so happy you like my Country blessings 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🥰🥰🥰
Hi Carmen, thank you very much I really appreciate it! Yes I found Peru to be a beautiful country!
Me alegro.
