    I'm surprised you didn't talk about naturally changing eye color. I've had eye color (I think naturally gray) that changes based on the light around me and whatever I'm wearing I'm pretty sure. I've heard that it's based on the amount of collagen in a gray eye but I'm not sure.

    As a mom of a baby who has had 2 eye surgeries and is in a consideration for the third one, I was listening to your list like "check, might need that one, sort of check, don't need that one, nor that one". My boy was born with bilateral congenital cataracts, so cataract surgery is a check but no IOL because his pupils didn't wanna dialate enough so he now wears contacts. Soon after he got a bilateral vitritis and ended up needing a vitrectomy in his left eye during which they discovered he had an epiretinal membrane stuck to the back of his eye, got rid of that too. His left eye is weaker and is starting to turn in a bit and also has secondary glaucoma - the surgery we're considering. Later in he got diagnosed with ocular albinism too. I wanted to ask if you could talk a bit about congenital cataracts or ocular albinism because both are pretty rare and interesting. P.S. Despite everything his eyesight is currently testing withing a normal range for his age. Sry about bad English.

      How do you get diagnosed so late? Don’t ocular albinos have red eyes?

    • @helenaferkula2025
      @helenaferkula2025 11 часов назад

      No, not all. He has gray eyes. The front of his iris has almost no pigment but the back of his iris has some. People who have no pigment on the back of the iris as well have red eyes. I didn't know either that you can be albino and still have some pigment left.

    To answer the question at 31:40, Preston answered one of the two options I'm aware of. The other option is to pay back the military's financial backing up to that point as a loan. The interest rate I saw was 2%. If you choose the loan and become eligible to be a doctor again you may get an invite back into the program. There may be other options as well but these two are what we're presented on the case I observed.

    I think it's okay that you don't have an official nurse character (aside from the wonderful snippets of the OR scrub nurse/ER charge nurse/NICU nurse - you really get the vibes of those characters). Doc Schmidt does a pretty good job of exploring the dynamics between physicians and nursing staff on the floor in a fun, self-deprecating way, but it is a fine line to balance I think.

    Oh I have a question! I've always found the science around medicine and the body super interesting, but I could never actually work in the field since everything grosses me out. So I've ended up doing medical adjacent background paperwork stuff (I'm not the business bro though lol). But is there anything about the eye that grosses you out about the eye? Like a surgery or condition that gives you the ick?

    Eyeball comedy. When I explain my NAION I tell people it starts with having a small disc in the back of the eye. I always enunciate carefully when I say this. "It's a small DISC. Dissssc. I have a small disc." That usually gets 'em laughing while I explain the rest of the condition.

    You asked for an eye doctor story. Well here goes. I have only had my eyes dilated once in my life, despite having many eye appointments. When I was in the 4th grade, I had one appointment where they did the drops. After the appointment, they told my mother I needed glasses and that, after I got used to them, they would help with headaches. We got the glasses and for a couple months I tried to get used to them. Unfortunately, they kept giving me headaches instead of preventing them. I'd have to remove them no matter how long I waited tried to get used to them. We went back to the doctor and discovered there had been a rather frustrating mistake. Turns out my vision was perfectly normal, they had somehow messed up the measurements due to the eyedrops, and I sailed on my merry way with no glasses at all. Later as a teenager, I was diagnosed with migraines which accounted for the headaches and last time I got my eyes check, I was only off by 1/2 a point, probably because I'm in my mid thirties and coming up to that reading glasses stage.

    Quick question, this has nothing to do with eyes, so you have really nice curly hair, and you've mentioned your past cancer and having treatment, is your curly hair a by product of chemo, called chemo curls? or have you always had curly hair? Btw I've emailed you before about possible topics, one of them being astrohyalosis. Tell me what you think, about that for a topic either on starry eyes or knockknockhi .

    This was cool! I've had strabismus surgery, and something I thought was neat is that they can do adjustable sutures so that they can fine-tune it afterwards. I didn't need them, which I'm kind of relieved about because it sounds like an unnerving experience, but it's also pretty cool that they can do that. Having the double vision go away (or at least go way down) really does make a huge difference! I really appreciate the pediatric opthalmology department (They're the ones who see adult strabismus patients too, at least where I'm at) And also - shout out to Orthoptics people, I didn't know they existed until I was dealing with the strabismus stuff, but they all seemed very friendly and helpful and all the tools they use are pretty cool looking, even if they do make my eyes sore 😅
