Calculate the mean, variance, and standard deviation of a continuous probability distribution.
Просмотров 1867 месяцев назад
Use calculus to find the mean, variance, and standard deviation of a continuous probability distribution. Starts with an example of finding a probability, then calculates an average (mean), variance, and standard deviation for f(x) = 1.25(1-x^2) between 0 and 1.

    How do you find P(A|B) with the given of P(A) and P(B), and they're mutually exclusive?

    • @rachelwebb
      @rachelwebb 5 лет назад

      If two events are mutually exclusive then the P(A and B) = 0, therefore by the definition of the conditional probability P(A | B) = P(A and B) / P(B) you would get P(A | B) = 0/.32 = 0. The main thing to remember is that mutually exclusive (also called disjoint) is not the same thing as independent events. Mutually exclusive events cannot occur at the same time. Independent events mean that one event does not affect the probability of the other event occurring.

    what do I do if I don't have a stats/list editor in my TI-89?

    • @rachelwebb
      @rachelwebb 5 лет назад

      Do you have the cable that goes from your calculator to the computer? If so then you can install TI-Connect software on your computer and then download the Stat/List editor to your calculator. You can also transfer it from calculator to calculator with the right type of cord using the Var-Link button. I have a link to the calculator directions on my web site: sites.google.com/pdx.edu/rachelwebb/home.

      The TI-89 calculator will find prediction intervals for you. Or a statistical software package like MINITAB. I have a TI-89 emulator on my computer, but it is a bit tricky to load the STAT/LIST app onto the emulator. You can download a free 30 day trial version of MINITAB at minitab.com. No shortcuts in Excel or the TI-83 or 84 calculators.

    • @rachelwebb
      @rachelwebb 5 лет назад

      You can use statistical software like R or SPSS. Also the TI-89 calculator will find a prediction interval for you. You can run a free TI-89 simulator on your computer and then do the 1-SampT-Int. The TI-84 has this shortcut too, but only does the confidence interval for a slope and not for y. Setting up a TI-89 simulator was not very intuitive.

      You can download the programs from my website at web.pdx.edu/~webbr/ using the TI-Connect software, provided you have the cable that came with your calculator. If you are in the Portland, OR area feel free to stop by office hours and I can quickly install the programs for you. One of my colleagues, Jess Millar, wrote the programs, she is a calculator wizard.
