    Linus Torvalds on why desktop Linux sucks? Your P1G, God Has Only Got The Code for Linux (the DOS/Unix Bit). He Hasn't given it To You, Because THATs ALL He's Got. Gnome/GTK is Redhat (Minions) AND KDE/Qt is SUSE (Borg/Avatar/Intel). Gnome is a Glorified - File Manager - Programmanager.exe, GTK is Like Unreal Engine or Unity, but for Windows Programs. X11/Wayland is Like DirectX, OpenGL, but for Windows Programs. What Linus, Doesn't Understand is That Operating Systems - To Speed, things Up, ARE "Like" FPGA's. Common Things, Are Loaded into Hardware. When You Click a Radio Button. Code in The Graphics Card AND Code in The CPU - Get Executed - Without Running Software. Its JUST, your Event Handler, that the CPU Runs. Less Common, Things - The CPU, Does EVERYTHING. E.g. Some Less Used "Data Grid". The CPU Draws it, Moves it Around as you interact with it, AND Calls your Event Handler. Have a Look At The Java Dalvic Byte Code. mariokmk.github.io/programming/2015/03/06/learning-android-bytecode.html Have a Look at DEX Code. THATS, Just C++ Acceleration. The Kernel, and Windows GDI is Accelerated.

    Linux distros needs an organization where they all agree whats the important aspecs to use on a distro, much like USB standard. THis lack of organization is the downfall of linux and profit from MacOS and Windows. They pick the good things on linux and build on top of it unfortunately.

    So many times i had to argue with Linux apostles that windows might be bloated and refuses to adhere to standards fully, at least it's forward and backwards compatible across most hardware and software. Very funny to hear Linus basically agree.

    There needs to be a Linux that is as simple/easy to use for a computer illiterate noob as windows XP. Flexibility is pointless for 95% of users if the interface is not stupidly simple to navigate and understand. There have to be a equivalent system in linux to x86´s EXE files. A simple double click and it asks you where do you want it installed (not a mount what ever bunch of bs) on what drive (simply named) and what folder, then does ALL things automatically and ready to RUN. Till we get that Linux will ALWAYS remain a niche quriosity for computer nerds only and not a serious alternative to Windows (any version). I think if XP went open source so new updates would be made today it would kill Linux, simply because the under educated masses can use it without going to college first.

    what we need is bring back static linking. Dynamic linking did not solve anything and made everything worse.

    I was having fun tinkering with linux as my daily driver, even using Gentoo, right up until they replaced HAL with udev and broke everything at a time when I i had a pressing need to actually use my computer. That woke me up to the stupidity of what I was doing.

    I have always been on windows, but just recently build a pc of my old parts, and installed Ubuntu. I cannot write a single line of code, and never uses the Command Line without a word for word guide, and then it is a last resort. But installing Ubuntu was pretty easy, I just let it do it's thing, signed up for Ubuntu Pro, and thats that. I use it only for browsing, and learning Blender, then I will take what I learned, and do it on my main pc. Only real complaint I have, is that my gpu is not shown in "taskmanager", forgot what it is called in Ubuntu. It is the latest Ubuntu LTS as of this writing, and I have no complaints, other than the gpu thing. So far I can recommend it 👍

    Unfortunately, there is no established culture in the IT space for reliability. Most developers don’t really understand process and are mostly incapable of identifying value. This isn’t only true for the Linux space, it’s true for people across the entire industry. The only thing that saves the corporate space is that at some point, poor reliability and high maintenance translates into economic loss. Most developers aren’t knowledgeable enough to acknowledge their own ignorance.

    I still love this. As a Sr Systems Engineer who started professionally in 1998, I loath having to fix my home system. Sure, I tinker at home in a home lab. That aside, Fixing oddities on a Linux desktop has zero interest for me after working on fixing, planning, stabilizing, maintaining systems 40+ hours a week. I just want to get on it and game, check my email, or whatever.

    Well I mean, I play games. I'm a firmware dev, all my work computers, servers, etc run linux (mostly debian), my laptop (which runs some games) is on debian etc.... the only reason why my main desktop has Windows on it is because linux sucks for games, so take that as you will. I think games are more than important.

    What Linux needs is a flagship for Muggles. Think Ubuntu but not open source. Make it open code. Sure why not. But not open source. And then add all the features your average mom of 2 child’s who works full time as a accountant will need - heck, pay companies to create native ports for your specific distro of Linux, once you have enough support for essential services/applications the users will come. Currently Linux has few users so it doesn’t get much native port, and because there’s not many native ports most people won’t even consider Linux. It’s a circle ⭕️. You need to add better support even if by force so that you get those users.

    10:20 he's right lol this video really sums it up for me, I'll still run my heavy/core workloads on headless Debian, CentOS, and FreeBSD VMs but when I, a technical person myself, is in "end user" mode, why would I choose anything other than Windows or Mac? "Oh just use ProtonDB" or "Oh just use this FOSS driver" or "Oh just use this FOSS alternative of $EnterpriseApplicationForMyField" just doesn't cut it for a daily driver...

    You can use Windows or Mac as your desktop and just ssh into a Linux server. That's what I do. I'm not a fan of the Linux desktop experience but it's honestly never been an issue because I'm using Linux to run programs, and I don't need a desktop environment for that.

    The reason why it's such a pain to package for Linux is because of shared libraries, and so many distro's being seemingly allergic to static linking. I agree with Linus on this one. OpenBSD makes it easy to static link, but they break their ABI every 6 months, which makes it frustrating on it in a different way. What FreeBSD and NetBSD do right is ABI stability without bloating up too much.

  • @JeyDotC
    @JeyDotC 25 дней назад

    Aaaand that's why .Net MAUI is not supported in Linux, it is fragmented AND has a very small market share, thus, it makes no sense spending money on it. 😅 Yes, fragmentation is a problem in Android too, but almost everyone has an Android device, hence, it's worth the trouble of maintaining lots of builds for that.

    Just had to get into Linux to do something this last week. I can tell you something that will stop it catching on. Having to elevate privileges just to do basic rubbish. Which then forces you into the terminal. And it makes you feel like you’ve gone back to the 80’s. Then all the boffins tell you that that’s why it’s so great. Well I’d hate to visit one of their ivory towers and solve riddle to use their elevator. Solve this, and there’s a chance it may catch on.
