The Right Pear Plot
Великобритания
Добавлен 7 май 2009
Hello and thank you for being here, and for following us on our first allotment journey here in Cambridgeshire, in the south east of England.
Tricia and I took on our first plot in October 2022, and within a few weeks we were able to extended our growing space by taking on plot 2.
We are learning as we grow, and we continue to be absolutely amazed by the sharing of knowledge and support from fellow allotment holders/growers from all over the world, via the online community.

THE GREAT ONION GROWING CHALLENGE 2425 - part 2
Another weekly update on the progress of my giant onion seeds. #gogc2425
We have germination!!! in only 4-5 days the Ailsae and Kelsae trays both started to come to life. I've noticed a few fungus gnats around, so I need to get on of the yellow sticky pads to catch them.
At present the heat is off and the lights are on for 12hours per day. In the boiler room the temperature is around 17oc so they will be great in here.
I love seeing how the green seedlings are coming alive and making me feel closer to the beginning of the growing season already.

Preparing for the Unexpected - Worm Farm Update

Hello This week, I’ve been busy preparing the allotment for Storm Darragh. 🌧️ From moving water butts to securing the brassicas with stakes and fixing that pesky plastic window in the shed (again!), it’s been non-stop. Fingers crossed everything holds up! 🤞 I also spent an hour tidying and prepping the greenhouse for Spring. I planted Pak choi 🥬, lettuce, and Chinese lettuce in freshly laid, we...

What a set up! This is SERIOUS business!!
Also got two new fans at the ready. Something to pamper over the winter 🥰
Great update Allie. My Ailsa Craigs were slow to germinate, although all 4 varieties were sown on the same day the Aila Craigs were nearly 2 weeks behind the others. So dont give up on them just yet. This growing challenge is coming on great now, i love watching all the updates from everyone. X
Thanks Jimmy, I’ve no down the rest of the packet of Ailsa Craig, one, just one is coming up now but hopefully more will come if they are always late to the party. I’m loving it Jimmy, such a great community 🥰
@TheRightPearPlot ❤❤
😂😂 did you forget to put Alisae Craig seeds in there I’ve done that before yep dig out the yellow stickies yesterday
🤣🤣 I have me sowing them on video so I can’t say I forgot 🤣🤣 yes stickies at the ready and fans at the ready x
They may be slow don’t give up on them 💪💪 and they won’t give up on you. Mine are slow but “not dead and not dead is good” 👍. Have an amazing weekend ladies stay safe, keep warm, Ali 🥶🇨🇦
Not dead is always good 😆 I’ve just checked the rest of the A Craig on the seed tray so will wait and see what happens now. Have a great afternoon Xx Allie &Tricia xx
Great update Allie TC. Barry (the Wirral) xx
@@barryroberts6470 🤗🥰 thanks Barry xx
Good update and germination. Shame about the Ailsa Craigs. 👍
Others have said they just could be very late to germinate, so I will keep looking after the pot… just in case. 🤗
Do you want to grow on in the Compost that grew the world heaviest Onion at 19.12 oz. Its Ecolife Soil Watering with Unchlorinated Water and using with BIOSYS Compost Tea. These are available from Medwyns Of Anglesey online.
Ohh that heated Garland tray is sweeeeeeet! Alisa Craig I used for 2024, was year old and I had 25% germination only. Other older onion seed was OK. But I guess in general fresh is best for onions. I'm itching to start mine, but have to wait until after Christmas festivities are done.
Oh wow really, I know fresh is best but didn't know the germination drops so quickly on year old Ailsa Craig. I've just tipped the rest in the container, so lets see what they do. x
Always good to see germination, it’s one of my favourite parts of growing, that first sight of seeds coming through. Probably catch you on Dannys live tonight.
Thanks Pete, I love my daily check in to then Seedlings to see how they are doing. Got all the bits I need to progress now ☺️
Good update video I hope to do an update next week 👍🥔🌱
Thank you Robert, I look forward to seeing your update. 🧅🌱
The best thing to see in the seed trays - germination 🎉🎉 so cute 😍
So nice to see in December ❤🎉
Loved seeing your worms at the end Allie, you treat them well. I think your onions will do better in the greenhouse as they will have more light but will grow hard as well. Lovely update as always. Take care 😍
@@bethanskitchengarden ahh that’s great to know they will be better in the greenhouse Bethan 😍. Need to get the first lot planted out soon too. Hope you’re having a great week. Xx

Lovely update Allie, that was a good looking parsnip. Can you buy the greenhouse glass clips that are in a u shape to secure your plastic that keeps falling out. They are metal but you can bend them together and they look like an omega sign. Take care 😍
@@bethanskitchengarden I just need Tricia to replace with the glass windows 🪟 we have found. 🤣 🥰

Hi Allie, you are one stuffy so and so getting that staging for a fiver, where did you get it from a shop called "Giveaway our Us"😂You did good getting those tools as well, it's amazing what some people chuck away. Your Onions🧅are looking good although i think one of them is digging to Australia🦘🐨it could be my eyesight👀i am getting older now👴🤣🤣 That Storm Darragh is a pain in the butt we had it bad on the Wirral with Trees, Fences, Cars getting flipped, Flooding and more, my Greenhouse in the back garden had five windows blow out, lucky for me i found all five and left them inside until this storm went away. Enjoy your weekend both of you, TC and be safe, say hi to Tricia for me. Barry (the Wirral)xx
lol found your onion! Was about to say then saw the comment lol Sh.t news on gimble tho 😢 ££££ sweet potatoes look great! Your worm setup looks awsome ❤ have a great week hun x
Hey Pammie 😊 well spotted, you are in second place 🎉 for being eagle eyed ❤ £26 for the adapter from somewhere in China!! So it will be the new year before I receive it!! DJI have not got the adapter I need that can be shipped to me. Not a happy bunny with them. Off on the school run 😂 catch you soon x ☺️
@ lol that’s good going seeing as I have double vision! 😂 Jeez you’re not the first about DJI… by the looks all are changing to the one Clare uses… Hollyland lark (Clare, Jessie, Kerry, Dori and now Tony C Smith) way cheaper too. Tech needs to be more robust eh! Have a good one hun x
@Garden-of-weeden thanks Pammie, I did look at that one….. let’s see. ☺️x
I think so 🥰
Some good finds there, I am sure they will be very useful, on my old plot I used some staging like that which had been dumped by the site gates and it was invaluable, particularly for drying onions.
@@izzywizzy2361 oh Izzy what a great idea for onion drying!!! Hope your doing okay 🤗🥰
@@TheRightPearPlot very good Thankyou, just a bit frustrated at the limitations in doing any gardening🥴
Hi Ali and Tricia 👋 What absolute bargains and free is even better! 😂😊 There's a shame about your mic but I've done exactly the same. Sound is fine though 👍 Naughty onion sets 😂 Your other onions are doing great, I think they are ready to plant out now. Sweet potatoes look lovely, what a harvest! Fab worm update 👍 Have a great week ❤ x
@@Feelgoodgardens thanks Linda, yeah the first lot of onions are due to be planted out this Thursday. A free old hoe 🤣 doesn’t get better 😆 I can’t even get a genuine replacement part from DJI ☹️ they don’t have any in stock. So had to rely on Amazon & China!! £26 too 😱. But it won’t come till the new year, so greenhouse and shed chat only when the wind blows!!! Have a lovely day Linda 🤗🥰🪱
@TheRightPearPlot Thanks Alie, you too 😘 💖 x
This is how you get giants
@@JH-zo5gk 🤣❤️
You got a right bargain there with the staging... I've not really had time to do my onions yet but I hear that you have started your GOGC on Pete's channel. Hopefully more and more people get wind of it. Your sweet potatoes look great. Were they difficult to grow? And when did you plant your slips?
@@Lauralearningtogrow Hey Laura, I am going to check today as to when I planted the sweet potatoes 🍠, Tricia bought the 3 plants from the garden center. Next year I’m going to try start my own slips off. The bottom shelf I managed to straighten with the mallet so in an really pleased with it 😃 Yes the GOGC2425 is taking off, it’s great to have so many on board with it. Mine are coming on great, still tiny but I’m happy to have something growing and needing my attention 😊 they are under lights now. Have a beautiful day 🤗 Allie
@ I've not started my seedlings yet... due to time constraints but I'm hoping to have them sown and in my grow tent under lights before the end of the week. I watched you on the grow up channels live last week and it helped me so much as making preserves and jams is my aim for next year now that I have finally got my allotment after 9.5 year wait. So thank you for that. Have a fabulous day 😀
@@Lauralearningtogrow I was exactly the same Laura, o think we wasted produce our first year, do that made me look into preserving. There is nothing better than having produce to eat out of season. Just had our sauerkraut, and it’s the best I’ve ever had!! Good luck sowing your onion seeds, are you going to video it?? Ooh I’ve just bought some black garlic and another smoked bulb 😍 excited to make something with those Keep smiling Allie
Oh no the DJI adapter broke off....Ugh I'll have to watch out for that. I'm trying to work out how to turn up the recording volume right now. I have to up the volume in editing, which is a real pain to do every clip. I think I need to start worm bins back up. My problem is a dedicated space for them. My dehydrator is in their old spot.
And believe it or not DJI are unable to send me a replacement as they don’t have any in stock!! So I’ve had to go to Amazon and spend £26 on one from China which will arrived in the new year 🥲
@@TheRightPearPlot I just checked amazon here $22.99. So sorry this happened. I have been trying to keep mine in my jacket pocket, but habit is the back jeans pocket. I broke my tripod recently by falling into it LOL. Luckily it's leg broke and not mine. I got it at a second hand store and it was working out great. I'll need to replace it in the new year. First I'm going to see if my brothers have any creative ideas to fix the broken leg on it.
I’m lucky with the tripod, I have a sturdy one i use from my photography days. I’ve just seen that I can use the mic by itself to record and then upload that to the video footage……. I may have a go at that and see how that goes 🤣 Have a wonderful day Robin xx
@@TheRightPearPlot Voice over might be easier....

I have been looking for staging it’s about 100 quid so a fiver is a real result 👍the manure looks brilliant really rich and dark, I am going to use bubble wrap in my worm bin what a great idea 👍
@@GanggangPeanut we dropped on lucky with the staging for sure. 👌 They love hiding between the bubbles in the wrap ☺️ and definitely stops the bin drying out. How long have you had yours??
@ I have a can o worms bin for about 5 years but I lost the sheet that covers the surface of the bin so bubblewrap is a good solution…love my little wriggly compost makers, and worm casting cost a fortune to buy so I’m quids in 😂😂👍
Oh love a good bargain 👍👍. 😂😂😂 old hoe, ok I won’t even touch that one both figuratively and literally. Holy those onions look amazing 🧅🧅. Glad your safety measures all worked out there are some horrific videos out there of the damage. Boy those worms eat well. Have a fab week, Ali 🥶🌞🇨🇦
@@myrustygarden ahh thanks Ali 🤗 homegrown veg scraps the worms devour weekly. Hoping their castings work wonders on the giant onions!! 🧅 Old Hoe so good i had to say it twice 🤣🤣 thought you would like that one 🤪 A couple of missing flexi plastic windows, I feel we got off lightly. Hey Allie, 😊 thank you for the mention 😁 that horse manure loooks Fantastic ❤❤❤❤ you should try and get some more of it. That staging looks decent. I was so chuffed to see your babies being so well looked after. @@allotmentjoy they will be going out sometime this week 😄 @ Love a bargain, and free you can’t knock Elaine x
You can't beat an old fork an hoe can you! 🤣 That staging looks great Allie. We have a 3 tier wormery in black crates so we have one crate full and then use the next one. The bottom one is for drainage. Yes the worms getting in are a pain and you can use fine gauze if you want to seal it but tbh, we just pour them in to the main composter. I learnt that worms can survive underwater for 2 weeks, which was cool, so as long as i feed them within that time it is ok. Had ours for some years now and is great. We used to bring them into the worktop in the autumn and winter to keep them breeding and eating but they slow down anyway this time of year and we don't have as much green waste. I used to be more fussy with them but we have a routine now for feeding, etc. Those sweet potatoes look great. I reckon if we had a decent summer they would have been a lot bigger. Hope you have a great week now the storm is over. Take care all! x
That’s some great information there about your worms! 🪱 thank you 🙏🏼 and yes we will grow sweet potatoes 🍠 again next year, so maybe they will be bigger. Hoe and fork 😂😂 couldn’t help myself 😂😂😂 Must get back to work, 🤗 Catch up soon ☺️ Allie x
