The insulation on a spark plug is made of porcelain. Also, a friend of mine who used to race these bikes said that they used to remove the head and clean the carbon off the top of the piston to get a more accurate reading of piston position before using the dial gauge. You can actually do the timing with the heads off. You can easily Aneil the head gaskets by heating them and dropping them in cold water.
I just did one myself. I was shocked at how fast the acetone dissolved the kreem. The kreem is actually PVC. that's why it doesn't hold up to ethanol fuel. After that, I used white vinegar to get the remaining rust out. Then relined with POR15. I've also had great luck with Caswell.
Never fix a pressure tank that has rusted through, the small leak is your indication that the tank has reached end of life as a pressure vessel. Can't help but notice you haven't posted anything after this rebuild series, I hope the tank didn't explode on you like it did another youtuber who repaired a leaking tank by welding it.
Wow you really put in some work I wish you would have been able to park the phone and set it up to capture every minute to see that it actually took you four and five hours because you were new to this so you had to figure it all out on the Fly
Working on a '72 R5.....yours is way worse than mine, and I have 6 weeks in it and total so far over 2k in it....but getting close, starts and runs...just put a new clutch in it...
You just made me decide not to coat my 1984 Interceptor tank. When I see these guys coating their tanks on YT, I know it is only time before they have your problem because it is virtually impossible to get every spec of rust off, and seal it completely. Our alcohol fortified gas pulls water out of the air and causes the rust eventually, which will eventually separate the liner. Have been doing electrolysis in the winter temperatures for 4 days and still have a little left to go.....these tanks are a pain in the rear. I thought of using the same tape but wasn't sure it would hold the pressure of a tank full of electrolyte, and I'm sure aluminum gives up its electrons before iron oxide will. I am just planning to keep the tank full with high octane gas and add an oz of oil to the full tank when I store it for the season. From what I've read, that will seal the exposed iron and give another 40 years of service (hopefully). Thanks for the video!
I’m in the process of doing the same on a 71 Honda with a thick coating inside and it is driving crazy how much of a hassle it is but will be worth it. Great video!
Nice job. You can set that up with dual run control. Couple things I wondered about... the factory has copper lines from the head to the tank. I think you might end up with heat issues melting that hose. Secondly, was there a check valve right before the tank inlet? There should be to allow for easier motor starting
Im trying to clean out a failed liner in the tank of my Suzuki VX800. You are doing all the same things I'm doing. I just wish it didn't take so long...
The vent brush I got you could bend. I also put a bunch of drywall screws in it and shook it a lot! Count them when you put them in so get all of them out.
A little late to the show, but thanks for this. I am working on a 1972 Yamaha R5C, a year older than your RD. Drum brakes front and rear and no reed valve (Torque) induction. As for the copper head gaskets, they can be reused. It is recommended to heat them to a dull red and then quench them in cold water. Not everyone does this, however. I haven't. Thanks again. doc
Hello Ray, really enjoying your channel. I’m rebuilding a 1975 RD350b and like you my Vin sticker is damaged. I’m in the UK and you mentioned getting a replacement from over here. Could you let me know the company you used please as I am having difficulty sourcing one. Many thanks. Rob
.Great vid, Great Timing tool Hack! ! MOTION pro TOOL requires Engine OUT of frame to time RD 250/350. Remember..if the tank is already off..you can disconnect the M/Fem bullet connectors AT COILS ..or: use the Business card trick ( between the Points / Cyl you are timing. instead of TINY blade conn. and Tiny STRIPPY screw..Thanks!
Nice work! Was looking for video for changing out my vented to ventless. Perfect to watch. Looks like, for me anyway, a bit more than I am willing to bite off. Alot of work and am a bit more concerned, where i live, about gas, permits, etc. I found it a bit humorous that you did all that really detailed involved, knowledge needed work, but didn't want to do the drywall and tiling. Again, nicely done.
Thanks so very much for the smarts. I’m okay with the conventional machines but these guys give me the Willies. My S92 purchase lasted for 45 minutes before it sucked a valve, as far away as you could get and down the hill from the barn. Thumbs up and subscribed. You bet! Thanks again
Hey Ray, great video. For those without a gas line but still wanting a ventless fireplace with real flames. We recommend an ethanol fireplace. www.modernethanolfireplaces.com/blogs/news/ethanol-fireplace-ultimate-buyers-guide we've put together a handy guide to help you learn more.
Great video... Thanks, very helpful, I'll do my wife's car when it warms up and when I get some time... I noticed your mileage, have you had any oil disappearing problems.? Wife's car is. Not leaking, no oil spot where she parks. It weird. But jus asking.
Thanks for making this video! There isn't much info out there about these bikes, so this helped me out! I just recently bought a 1972 R5, the headlight is in good condition now but I wondered what to do if it ever burned out? I think I'll use your idea about prying those six tabs up and breaking the bulb, and then I'll replace it with an LED bulb! Ride safe! Peace!
I've watched this video countless times and my left cylinder point can't advance enough. My left point is opposite yours, it's all the way up, left point way up, right point way down. Is there an adjustment for backing plate? Am I missing something? Any help would be apprecuated, great video, by far the best one for timing, or attempting to time

You also should cover the whole tank with masking tape. If you drip some acetone on the paint, it will be ruined.

Dude after al that i wanted to see inside the tank . Thats what its all a out to see what product does a efficient job .
Wow you really put in some work I wish you would have been able to park the phone and set it up to capture every minute to see that it actually took you four and five hours because you were new to this so you had to figure it all out on the Fly
Kreem is a shitty liner... POR15 of FERTAN TAPOX are great... (tested on couple of projects)
looks like you fkd up the dial indicator measurement
Working on a '72 R5.....yours is way worse than mine, and I have 6 weeks in it and total so far over 2k in it....but getting close, starts and runs...just put a new clutch in it...
top end,tires,electrical, battery, seat,carb work, 9,092 miles...
thats one beautiful bike! excellent job!

Do you think vinegar would get the tank liner out as well instead acetone?
Wow Ray, I am going through pretty much the exact same scenario....same bike....same tank....same problem! Good call on the metal tape!
Please send me this old meters dails 🙏
I need rd350 speedometer please send me
I’m in the process of doing the same on a 71 Honda with a thick coating inside and it is driving crazy how much of a hassle it is but will be worth it. Great video!

I'm dealing with the same scenario, except with what I believe is por 15. The aluminum tape is a smart idea, I think I'll use that.
Can u help in spare parts for rd 350
HVC cycle, Lincoln, Nebraska...got all parts
Did my Sporty Tank yesterday. I used a 2' dog chain so that I wouldn't have to dig out the nuts & bolts and it worked great. Great Video!
Im trying to clean out a failed liner in the tank of my Suzuki VX800. You are doing all the same things I'm doing. I just wish it didn't take so long...
What about the side of the tank that isn't visible inside? How did you go about scrubbing that side?
The vent brush I got you could bend. I also put a bunch of drywall screws in it and shook it a lot! Count them when you put them in so get all of them out.
***NOTE*** with this mod you may have to change your primary jet from 105 to 112. I did this with my 72 CL350 and it now screams!! best bike ever! :)
good video thanks - quick tip you can always use the negative side of the battery when your looking for a good ground when using a multi-meter
Hi can you tell me how set ur carb tune and how set points
Hard to explain, RUclips has a few other videos. It took me 3-4 times before I got it right.

Send an email to kawaparts@aol.com. They did mine they just don’t advertise it on eBay.
Thanks Ray, I’ve sent them a mail today. Hope you are all ok and will be getting out on the 350b when all this madness is over.
nice truck!

My wife’s car is doing that. 2013 Hyundai Sonata
How do you like the ventless over the direct vent? What brand did ya end up going with?
