    you are the ONLY person ive ever seen ENCOURAGE me NOT to use the heros journey, and for that alone, i owe you my life, and automatically you have better advice than the entirity of the internet combined. heros journey is fine, but i dont WANT to follow that cookie cutter, its not interesting to me. and there is no advice out there for people who dont want to follow that format, its just constant pressure to conform to it instead. and its not like i want someone to hold my hand, but ive always struggled to plot stories, so when i look for advice on it, its really frustrating to just see "follow these Exact Steps every time ^^" again and again. so sincerely, as small as it may seem, thank you for encouraging people to NOT use it. and even if i didnt need permission, thank you for giving me permission to not use it.

    FINALLY SOME GOOD ADVICE ON CULTURE CREATION!!!! Thank you so much for this, you've given me a framework to help me Actually understand how I can create and shape different cultures, and hleped me realise that I unintentionally have established a few things that have a lot more cultural sugnifigance in my own project than I realised - I already knew a necromancer could be really powerful in a post apocalypse setting, so making one a guard seemed smart, but the knock on that that /alone/ would have on the people around them is gonna be really fun to explore

    Advice I'm familiar with (from word and/or experience) and still glad to see get raised. Cheers! To add to the points on meditation and dopamine detox: I've seen many people say 'meditation isn't my thing' after trying it once or a few times or even not at all. Which could be true. But there are thousands of meditation techniques and each is to be done for particular purposes - to achieve certain effects within the mind and body. Meditation isn't a single action, but an activity that has an abundance of forms and functions. Trataka, for example, is a meditation practice that involves staring at a single small point (such as a candle flame or dot) without breaking focus for a few to several minutes (there are dangers to this regarding damage to the eye (etc), which is why it's generally advised not to go above 10 minutes - beginners are best to aim for 1 minute or even just 30 secs when starting out). The point of this exercise is to improve one's attention span (the are other benefits too, but that's the main one, to my understanding anyway). Other meditation practices may be designed to improve breathing, memory, emotional regulation (anger issues, etc), or something else. There are all sorts of reasons to do meditation and ways to do it, and I wish that was more commonly understood. On dopamine detox, one key things somewhat related to this is idleness: we need more of it - more silence and solitude, less business and noise - to allow our minds to run free with imagination and creativity. Why is Shower Thoughts a thing? Those moments when we're alone in that mostly quiet space of running water there's a sparkling of something clever, funny, or otherwise authentic from within us. Those moments when we come up with witty retorts a lot more easily than before. Those moments when we wonder about things that resonate with us and start pondering possibilities. Because it's the only time in the day when many people are actually letting themselves be alone with their thoughts. Too often we're stuck watching videos, listening to music, or otherwise keeping up barriers made of noise and depriving ourselves of that idle time we sorely need. For all sorts of reasons. Which is partly why I like Neil Gaiman's writing advice: go somewhere free of distractions with your writing tools for 1 hour under the condition that you are only allowed to do one of two things - remain bored or write. Also, happy to hear you push back against the rigid writer rules. (That James Bond example was so weird - what kind of rules are those!?) In the realm of fiction, rules are more like tools - maybe they work for many or most stories, but that doesn't mean they're suited or the best thing for * every * story. A lot of the greatest works in storytelling bent and broke rules. And internal consistency is a great compass to follow! Thank you!

    I really hate people's takes on long lived races. Can you please explane to me why would long lived races would be so resistant to changing their culture? If anyone know that cultures change and things change it would be long lived races. Why? Because like any race that has thoughts and emotions they live life and experience things. They have passions, love, goals, curiosity, and wounder. That's why everything improves. Build a wooden castle? Gee how can I make an even better castle? People will improve in art, Learn nee thing's, They probably been threw some shit too like wars, natural disasters Or whatever else. All of this will effect culture and culture will change. Which is why you don't see elves at the level of stone age. The only difference between long live races and short one is they have more time to study it and be the best at it. Infact they would be the best in a lot of thing's because they would have the time to protect their craft or knowledge. And with this they make new better thing's and gain more knowledge about thing's there for their culture will change evolving over time passing down more information and history so they are not doomed to repeat them Infact they are probably be the ones who are way more advanced because they do live so long and in order for that to happen their culture changes.

      Basic human sociology. Aside from modern times (due to globalisation and widespread communication technology), big changes in societies were generetional (although even in modern days you kindoff see this happening but i am not going to discuss modern politics here). Usually the next generation would bring about change to the culture if so. When you have a long lived race change will be very slow because change bring chaos and those who live around tradition will not allow for that. Of course with the chaos something new can be born but that does not change the fact that it does bring chaos as new ideas need to be tested somehow. That is why in each cultural shift you have big events (usually of the violent kind, but not always) If you read about any big movement in any culture ever (again aside modern times) it was a new generation of people taking power from the older generation of the older order that would bring wide-spread sociatal change. Of course you can cherry pick individual examples but this video and the argument is not about individuals, it's about big socities and cultures in general. When generalizing you need to look at the big scope and not individual scope. Again, we base this on human societies, if you want to have a long live race that does not apply to this, you need to be really good at explaining why they have a different dynamic which is very hard and often falls flat on it's face.

  • @kel555y

    Loved the video, though I will say at least from my perspective this is a problem but not one many people look at as a problem. I think most people don't have a problem with the fairy tale ending in which everything went back to normal, or that a conflict has no lasting impact, this is probably due to a lot of writers being from places that didn't have to deal with lasting impacts, or the ending was in fact everything went back to "normal". But this is not to say that its not a problem, even if people don't see it as a problem internal consistency is needed for immersion like you said. The unreliable narrator can work incredible well, mostly if they have someone to play off of who is maybe a bit more reliable, but they can play in a way that gives enough for the reader to understand what "happened" but leave lingering questions. Great work, and happy new year

    • @lordtea7688
      @lordtea7688 24 дня назад

      Thank You and You too! And i agree. I don't think there are general concept that are "bad" on principle, just the usage of them. The unreliable narrator is one of my favorite tool to show different perspectives Also small things that people don't see on first glance can still be important, stories have a lot of things going on in the background that most people never fully realize but work on them subconciously. Barely anyone will question the lack of lasting consequences after the big resolution but in the same time if you continue the story they will start to feel "off" but unable to describe why.

      @@lordtea7688 I adore these types of videos, and the "little things" because its a certain kind of sadness when you read what could have been a great story that becomes only good or middling because of these over looked things as their plot suffers a death from a thousand cuts. So I hope my comment didn't come off as dismissive. Cheers.

      In my opinion the "platonic ideal length" for an instructional youtube video is 10 minutes. Easy to find 10 minutes to watch something new and fresh. But, your essays are compelling enough I'll find a longer stretch of time for them. (But yes, aiming for just 10 minutes for the next one would be really appreciated! Nothing wrong with splitting it into "part 1, part 2,..." etc. if you have significantly more than 10 minutes of material.

    In my campaign worlds I never make a simple Thieves or Assassins guild. I have a clan, gang, syndicate, mafia, family, warlord, tribe, cartel, mob, guild, cabal, ring, cult, and such. Often this may exist within a feudal structure and there can be more than one overlapping feudal like structure, for example one around secular rule, one around religious rule, and one around economic rule which at times have all existed simultaneously in some societies. A thieves guild then would probably not call themselves a thieves guild, but they might be the strongest gang in control of an area or could be a collections of gangs which agree to work with each other in a feudalistic manner. Alternatively it could be a powerful and/or rich person or group of people who control most of the criminal activity in their area, a corrupt noble or merchant. It could even be the ruler of the whole kingdom who secretly or even openly supports thieves to prey upon some other kingdom, like some pirates/privateers. Such groups can be few in number if they have an effective monopoly on power, they can be many in number, they can be more or less organized, their level of violence can vary but violence normally results in violent reaction which could then give the background of a gang war going on or a war between the government and the criminal organizations which are too strong for the government to simply crush. History and modern times are full of great examples to pull from.

    I think a good way to showcase a difference in culture is to show Rohan and Gondor as two cultures of the same Race, and then notice the different cultures between races. Halflings being very agricultural, peaceful and laid back. Dwarves being hard-working, sturdy, gritty because of past events and grudged, etc. Elves have had a long lived but tragic experience, and they like to enjoy the world in their entertainment through song and grace. For Rohan and Gondor it pretty much (in very generic terms) sums up Humans who live out in more rural areas and developed by ways of the horse and such. And Humans who live in more Urban settings (Gondor cities) and are more confined, organized to defend their lands from the enemy which they've been having to deal with for a long time when we see Gondor.

    To add to the point you make around 26:00-27:00 is that sometimes the internal division can be as small as one person and end up not leading to change within the faction. New Vegas has this with Veronica and the Brotherhood of Steel. She sees a lot of issues in how the BoS does things and wants to change things, she wants the Brotherhood to stop being so isolationist and confrontative and is seeking for a way to convince the elder to see things her way. But the thing is that Veronica fails at this. No matter what evidence Veronica presents the elder, either McNamara or Hardin, her proposal is shut down, and then the questline becomes a question of whether Veronica stays in a faction she doesn't agree with, but is the only family she's ever known, or leaves. It not only makes for a beautiful and tragic character arc, but also further fleshes out the Brotherhood as a faction, they're so dogmatic they're willing to face their almost certain dissapearance so they can stay true to their Codex. Mixing character arcs to the core of the factions in your world is an excellent way to make them seem organic, to show that, behind the cool armors, the colors or any other signifiers, the faction is still just a collection of individual characters, whose personalities are going to interact in different ways to the principles of said faction. Amazing video. The algorithm really came in clutch for me today.

    • @lordtea7688

      Certainly, there was so many more things i could touch upon because NV is a really well fleshed out game (especially if you consider that they had only 18 month for that!) You also have character arcs mixing with factions and giving their own take in case of Cassidy and Boone. Arcade will introduce you to the enclave remnants and give a lot of his own perspective on them... New Vegas is truly a brilliantly made web of interconnections.

    With Caesar's Legion, I believe that Obsidian initially wanted to flesh them out more to make them seem less overtly evil, but they didn't have the time due to the very short development of the game. It truly is the only game I can remember in which a whole region feels fleshed out. Even places you can't go to feel real because it feels like people live there, like the NCR controlled California west of Vegas, and you hear of factions that don't even exist anymore such as the many tribes that Caesar assimilated into the Legion, like the Hangdogs or Twisted Hairs.

That's how time passes when you are a skeleton who need to wear felshsuits to pose in front of a camera in this bigoted necro-phobic world. Truly, the undead are the biggest victim of all! Anyway, since undeath and post-apocalypse are so closly tied together and we see one of the vitimized groups of undead (the ghouls) in this story i decided to play it, because i guess people like New Vegas.
