i2c / ii: basic physical connection walkthrough
i2c, or ii, is a flexible communication protocol which allows certain modules from manufacturers like Whimsical Raps and monome to send commands to each other digitally, which opens up possibilities that 3.5mm patch cables can’t facilitate.
Though connecting i2c headers is pretty straightforward for the confident user, first-timers may feel uncertain about the process. This video demonstrates the basic steps (which cables to use, which pins to use, the order to go in), but it is _not_ a deep-dive into i2c functionality. It's meant to be a very brief surface-level overview, but we'd be happy to show more -- just let us know what you want to see in the comments :)

    This is fantastic; thank you so much for helping us all understand this module better. I wonder if you might be open to one small bit of constructive criticism: The stuff you are doing with crow and Just Friends is going to be pretty opaque for anyone who isn't already very familiar with the WR/monome ecosystem, and maybe even a few people (👋) who are... Maybe you could include lengthier, timestamped explanations of what these modules are doing in the video description? Just thinking about how to make this awesome module accessible to even more people. Thanks again!!

      thank you for the question! this video is simply standalone instruction on connecting eurorack modules for digital communication via i2c. these modules are crow (the black one) and w/, which are designed by monome and Whimsical Raps. we recognize that making a video showing how to connect three cables is silly, but we've received so many emails over the years from folks who are trepidatious about the physical connection, so we thought this would help :)

      i2c allows modules to communicate behind-the-panel, which opens up functionality that patch cables and control voltage cannot access. these modules are crow (from monome) and w/ (from Whimsical Raps) -- they can communicate with each other digitally over i2c, when their headers are connected as shown in the video. here's a demonstration of i2c communication between these two modules: ruclips.net/video/2RUHr-iX1VE/видео.htmlsi=2QAobYAWHZlFYKym&t=1174 please let us know if you have any additional questions!

    Mind blown by the trick to remove the legs without a solder sucker around 12:00. Out of curiosity, did you choose that style of socket over thonkiconns for a specific reason? Feels like I haven't seen this socket type on any of the modules I've opened up.

    • @whimsicalraps
      @whimsicalraps 8 месяцев назад

      we chose those jacks because they were available i think. this was back in 2014 or so and the "thonkiconns" were still a custom make noise thing if i remember correctly. i think there was a version available but it had a solderlug for ground which required hand-wiring. i've used thonkiconns since 2018/19.

    this is super interesting! How might you go about inserting silences or rests into a sequin? It seems like this would expand the expressive possibilities significantly. My initial thought is inserting an extremely low value (i.e., to get it under audio rate), but that seems like a crude solution

    • @whimsicalraps
      @whimsicalraps 2 года назад

      originally i thought of sequins as only for pitch, then you can sequence the rhythm separately. separating pitch & rhythm is a very 'modular' way of thinking that i've found fruitful. you can of course use a second sequins for controlling the speed of the clock that creates the notes. alternatively, you could insert the string "rest" and then in the code that calls the sequins, use an if-statement to stop from calling the note. another approach would be to use tables of {note, duration} inside the sequins (instead of just numbers), then in your 'play_note' code you use the table contents to control both pitch & clock-sync duration.
