The truth about work-life balance in a Big4 consulting firm // All about consulting series (Ep.02)
Work life balance in consulting is probably oneof the hottest topics, at least in my world 😅 If you are like me, you are really keen to have decent work-life balance but might also be nervous about about it going downhill in consulting. Consulting firms have been known to have long working hours and high intensity and while that is on average true, it also caries a lot. In the US, for example, hours are much worse than the UK but salary is also higher. My experience is based on 2.5 years in a Big4 firm in London, UK and it’s definitely had its ups and downs. Now that I’ve been on a number of different projects, I can share some factors that I noticed affecting what my work-life balance wi...

Was LSE worth it? 5 years on and 4 jobs later
Просмотров 166Месяц назад
Is LSE worth it? As an LSE graduate, I am sharing a few thoughts on how going to LSE did or did not affect my career journey since. Of course, university is a very personal choice so there isn’t a blanket answer for everyone. But if you are on the fence I hope hearing about my experience will help (or just add to the confusion LOL) 😁 Here are a few videos I mentioned that you might find useful:...

    Hi Anastasia, I like your content. I have just received an offer from one of the big four. I am a little nervous because I have been in Science and Engineering (Oil & Gas) for most of my life. I did an MBA to pivot into Consulting and now its finally happening. I am also hoping I will have a healthy work life balance. I am only starting in two months. What should I expect the first month?

    • @AnastasiaKrokhina
      @AnastasiaKrokhina 2 месяца назад

      Thanks so much for watching and congrats on your offer, that’s amazing!!🫶 what grade are you coming in at? If you’re an experienced hire, you will likely have a bit of time for induction and then will join your first project soon after you’ve started. The first month will probably be filled with some admin to get yourself set up, online learning and compliance courses but most importantly meeting lots of people and starting to build your network. I’ve found that people tend to be very supportive and there to help if you need to ask any questions or are just curious about a particular area of work so I’d be very proactive in asking for help or any other support you need. At big4 there’s also a culture of having “coffee chats”, short 15-30 mins catch ups that you can literally suggest to anyone you want to meet or speak with so it’s very easy to socialise and get to know the people around you. If you meet someone in an area you’re interested in I’d always also ask them at the end for a few more names of people they can connect you to. I know the first months can be quite hectic but I’m sure you’ll do absolutely great. Industry experience is super valuable so while you’ve not been in consulting before, you’re bringing rich knowledge and real life experience with you which lots of people in consulting do not have. I’m sure people around you will have lots to learn from you. I hope it goes smoothly and that you enjoy your role - best of luck!

    Just finished first year at LSE - was definitely concerned about these stereotypes, especially the career-oriented ones but I think its just like every uni in the sense that every uni has every type of person (I was honestly surprised at the kinds of people who exist here for better or for worse), and the uni experience ultimately comes down to who you choose to surround yourself with.

    • @AnastasiaKrokhina

    Does your company let you set up a Ltd company?

    • @AnastasiaKrokhina
      @AnastasiaKrokhina 4 месяца назад

      I believe so! There is no blanket restriction on having a limited company of your own while being employed as far as I’m aware. But what you have to do in my firm for any other income streams is declare them which then triggers a conflict check from the quality & risk management team. So while you’re technically allowed to set one up there will be some exceptions if it creates conflict of interest for your current job. Have you had any experience with this yourself/ any insights you might want to share? 🙂

    Hi Ana, i dont think one can effectively outline the activities of a consultant in 6 minutes. Consultants get paid a lot of money. Why? Can you outline some tools you use to manage your day? Tools you use to analyse problems? What personality traits are effective in life? An example of a difficult problem that you solved. How was it solved? How does one work smart? How does one maximize the amount of work one can do in a day? (If that is optimal.) How does one manage work relationships? How does one manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment? Etc. 🙂

I studied government and economics for my undergrad and then did a masters in creative and collaborative enterprise. Quite a random mix and to be honest I don’t think I’m using much of the content I’ve learned at uni in my job now - it’s primarily all about transferable and soft skills unless you’re in a more quant/ technical role. There is not a lot to smile about when you have a serial murderer who's stealing the nation's wealth at the helm. Nicer people are more easily scammed as is evidenced in Russia. I lived in Europe many years and met several Russians who'd escaped that sad place and I thought they were great people.

    Some amazing responses here. As an American who lived in Europe for 9 years and Asia for 2.5, I never considered a smile as a detriment. I’m an American, I must be wrong. The smile is going away though. Nowhere in the world does the radical left have a sense of humor or decent social demeanor. Usually dour, angry, effete. The left is ascendant in America. You’ll soon see. Comedians will be the first cancelled. Oh, shoot, that part is over. Now they’ll be fired. They tried Chapelle, then Rogan, now Koy. Remember the Oklahoma rodeo clown who wore an Obama mask. He got fired. Of course, Kathy Griffin holding a picture of a severed head of Trump was just hilarious. Darn, people are going to think I don’t have a sense of humor.

    Great video. As an American, I would say that people reflexively smile here and that smiling is even, effectively part of politeness. I also have French citizenship from my father and I would say that there politeness is mostly in using the appropriate words. This has led to French and Americans finding each other rude. Russian politeness? Bringing a gift... complimenting the food when done... enjoying a good drink together... using the patronymic. That's my experience for what it's worth.

    Ironically Anastasia smiles a lot while she explains this, this makes her relateable, and seem friendly and therefore also prettier, undermining the point she makes, if she delivered it with the dead-eye dry delivery of an average Russian she would have less fans. I live in Bulgaria, and they are the same, but it is not a good thing, everyone always look dour and depressed, and it actually makes people grumpier overall like a self fulfilling prophecy, they are friendly when you talk to them and engage them, but they look very unapproachable, makes me in general feel like the most unfriendly country I have ever been in, and Russians too, and it doesn't help that the environment is ugly, what Americans call commie blocks, here is called Panelki and in Russia is called Khrushchevka, no regard for beauty, pure pragmatism, but nobody takes pride in it, the pavements are uneven, there is mud everywhere, everything looks ugly and depressing, and the people with this dour expression adds to the general miserable impression. It is only the pre-communist era architecture and nature that is beautiful, whatever the communist touched they made grey and depressing. Whilst I understand the argument of authenticity it is not better if people are authentically grumpy all the time, it feels much nicer in places where people are warm and friendly like in Asia (more so in Bali, Indonesia etc), everyone you meet has a smile and easy going attitude and they have authenticity too, so I don't think they are all less authentic unless it is like in American shops where it is fake for the customer, you can smile and be authentic, you can also be dour and authentic, I know which I prefer.
