    one of these days I want to try sifting an entire cellar hole - but that would be quite a project (those old colonial homes often burnt down...sometimes multiple times...and they would just reuse the foundation - so you can imagine all the goodies that end up at the bottom)

    The Amethyst color is from being exposed to the sun. The mineral makeup of the glass reacts to the radiation from the sun. You can take clear bottles and leave them in direct sunlight, such as on the roof, for months, and the same effect will happen. Some companies can do it for you too. The videos by "Digger Dave and Shovelin Shelly" do this all of the time to resell them in that purple color. Unfortunately, it looks like those bottle all were intentionally broken. Which is a real shame, especially the Pontiled bottles. Best of luck!

    I recently visited Vermont for the first time. The colours of the trees were incredibly beautiful! Sadly, I had no luck finding bottles, or those glass insulators we don't get in the UK. According to my dictionary of inks, 'Apollos W. Harrison began as a seller of books, maps, and ink at No. 8 1/2 South 7th Street, Philadelphia, in about 1847. By c1857 he had begun to trade in perfumery, which gradually superceded his ink making.' I hope that is helpful somehow. It seems to confirm the dating of the carmine bottle.

Also, this is a big stress release. Getting back to the wife, she worries about me digging given how old these dumps are and the potential hazards as she puts it , Lead. Etc. I recently found some fireplace mantal pieces. I looked this up and it probably contains asbestos. Just wanted your thoughts on this? Also, what do you do with all the shards? @donnya205 thank you so much!! It's not the safest hobby, but it's also not the most dangerous. I think if we are smart and use proper protection like cut proof gloves and a mask or kerchief, if it's dusty, it's pretty safe. The footing is tricky at times, but you can always try to find a buddy to go along as well. Unfortunately, I do not have much info regarding asbestos. Sorry! I will definitely make a video once I get around to actually creating something with my shards. I plan to someday try and cut tops and bases so they sit flat or have even edges. They would be fun for marble displays, etc. I've also seen some really neat rain catchers made from bottle tops/necks by stringing them together vertically. There are so many options. • @jardigsvermont
      @jardigsvermont 2 месяца назад

      @sls1776 thank you!! I am pretty new as well! I believe it would be 1920s-1930s as it is machine made and doesn't glow under a black light. Most clear glass made before 1920 or earlier, maybe 1918 or so, had manganese in it and that is reactive. It also allows the bottles to turn that beautiful shade of purple when exposed to sunlight due to the manganese. But thats not a sure-fire way to know. Just a good guess. It's also tough to source some of these local sodas as not much info is always available. Like this one, I haven't been able to find any info on! I love it tho!
