Very important topic of discussion. Measurable steps have to be taken in order to disembroil our current metrics of success. Organisations require practical instruments to rid themselves of the erroneous mindset where efficiency is being a goal par excellence.

Very interesting discussion. I enjoyed and did not fail to connect to it. Thanks for simplicity in explanation... Adding few points, may help to ease the understanding of Supply-Chain position in an End-to-end (E2E) process. The E2E process is what OEMs are digitalizing across PDM & ERP Systems/Software.... My observation is that complexity in Supply-chain management is a result of a MISSING stable unit, I call it a "Configurable-Unit (CU)", where all business-functions/end-users in PDM/ERP can rely on as connecting point for traceability of changes in "materials & documents." the only two deliverables where we can measure and control through a product lifecycle, from birth of an idea to recycling... The common trend for modularization of Supply-Chain is to create a Geometrical/CAD Unit (let us call it a Geo-CU), which is also referred to as Lego-Brick. Such Geo-CU is very suitable for standardizing/modularizing sourcing or manufacturing. However, as soon as the usage of Geo-CU expanded to full lifecycle, i.e. Engineering or Service end users are added, there will be a need for Functional-CUs (let us call it Fun-CU). As a result, the Geo-CUs/Lego-Bricks need to either be split or merge to create Fun-CUs which are necessary to create the base for configure-to-order and allow the flow of requirement to product configuration... My experience make me believe that the complexity can be dramatically reduced by starting modularization with Fun-CUs toward Geo-CUs suitable for sourcing & production.. The hard part of such standardizing/modularizing E2E (including supply chain), i.e. Fun-CUs first and then Geo-CUs, is that it is knowledge-intensive from full lifecycle view... That is what I have found in common among great leaders, H. Ford, S. Jobs, E. Musk, etc., who could developed shape Supply-Chains toward new functionalities delivered to customers..
