We are Alexa, Pat, and Gilligan, the fat boat cat, cruising around Mexico on our Nordhavn 57 called Noeta. Follow our journey from the Pacific Northwest to California to Rhode Island to Mexico! Where to next?!
Episode 17: The Shaft Saga is Over
Over the past couple of months we have experienced issues with our propeller shaft being out of alignment. This episode is all about the saga of the shaft, with a special interview with James Knight of @yachttechinc1754 explaining how it all went down and how it was solved.

In today's episode we explain why, after 31 days in the shipyard, and 3 days floating, we had to haul out of the water....again! And a few of the projects we were able to accomplish while floating. (And a special cameo by some RUclips fans and one by Gilligan!) #doctornordhavn #nordhavn #mvnoeta @yachttechinc1754 @mvnoeta ...oops - Title image says Episode 15 - it's actually 16! :)

The HAPPY FACE is ON!
Просмотров 735Месяц назад
Our bulbous bow has its happy face finally! We painted it on our 50 footer, and now it adorns our 57 foot Nordhavn too. It makes people smile when they walk down the dock…and that makes us smile. Be Happy!

Episode 1.2: Who are we? (The Remix)
Просмотров 946Месяц назад
A few months ago, we dropped Episode 1, a video about who we are and how we got here. However, as some of you know, we have had some major changes lately. So we decided to remake our intro video to more accurately share who we are. Enjoy!
Episode 12: South from Alaska
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.Месяц назад
We bought a Nordhavn 57 in Alaska, now what!? While we very much wanted to cruise Alaska and bring it south ourselves, work and family commitments kept us from doing that. However, we were in luck. James Knight with @yachttechinc1754 offered to bring it south, with his wife Janice, her sister Kari, and his good friend Warwick. Noeta was in great hands. Today's episode shares their journey. *Spe...

Episode 3: Losing All Systems (Updated Audio Version)

In this episode, after an amazing trip into the solar eclipse path of totality in the Gulf of California, things went wrong. What failed? How'd we manage? Watch to find out! This is an edited version of the original episode 3 that was uploaded April 22, 2024....the audio was really bad in that one. While we couldn't add microphones to the old footage, I could edit the music and audio levels...s...
Episode 2: North to the Eclipse (Updated Audio Version)
Просмотров 6732 месяца назад
In our 2nd episode, we take you to see the 2024 eclipse in the Sea of Cortez (aka Gulf of California). We also say farewell to dear boating friends, Totem. The audio of this version has been updated, after a number of comments about it :) Hopefully this is better! We didn't have microphones back then, but we do now....so audio gets noticeably better by Episode 4....so hang in there!

Sounds like the prop repair facility is in Tacoma? I also gathered you aren't naming the shop which I understand. My point is when you say, "the prop shop" it's not actually The Prop Shop in Mukilto? Safe travels!
@@davidevans8357 Good point! No- it’s NOT in Mukiltio- I didn’t know that was the name of an actual business. I’ll see if I can add a note on the video or description to clarify. Thanks for pointing that out!
Please, please, please, do no ever stop making these videos. You guys had me at "Hola"... P.s. I love your "new" boat. Well..., to be correct, I love all Nordhavn's..
Awww- thanks! We really appreciate hearing that! We’ve got more coming!
Great video, great to see you guys are back out there. Thanks to James for explaining the shaft situation. I learned a lot. Thank you!
Thanks 👍 He always has words of wisdom!
I’m having two shafts checked. The boat went through a hurricane and ended up on the sidewalk from storm surge. I’m having both shafts checked. Can I ask what the shop charged to check just the shaft? Fortunate,h we had two spare props and on spare shaft. I enjoyed the episode.
Yikes!! Good luck! Not sure on the actual cost of the prop shop as they discounted their service since it was such a nightmare. I hope all goes well for you!
So happy you are on the way. I know it took longer, but you have the peace of mind. I am curious, what kind of chairs are you sitting in at the helm? Looks like camping chairs, around the firepit? Cannot wait to see the upcoming videos and your trip. Take care and be safe....
Thanks! 😂Awe ‘the chairs’- welp 2 months ago we ordered new STIDD chairs- they ended up taking way longer than anticipated. So, just before we left Washington, we bought these tall camping chairs! They work fine in calm seas- not so much in big swells. I may have tipped over once or twice 😅 Still waiting on our STIDD chairs!
James in no way shouldn't blame himself for the shaft issue at all. I doubt the machinist that quit didn't even look at it. Shit happens and I know that from being in the trucking industry for almost 25 yrs. James will getting my business in the near future. Love your channnel!!
@@Genxtrucker72 Exactly! And we don’t blame him at all- the guy didn’t do his job! Thanks for watching!
Great episode! If you're back in town and want to go to a game, let me know!
@@TKFourTwoOne Thanks so much!! I think we are headed south finally- but we appreciate the offer!
Mr Knight, you are a true gentleman.
@@markstaniland7655 He really is!
Boat, we all learn every day, and like James say even after all those years we still learning and have big lesson and some time on basic like control coupling on shaft before putting back. Even with deep knowledge we can fall into the trap. This type of boat need lot of passion and patience. NO ETA was the right name with all this shaft Saga 🤣🤣 Nice job every one
We are definitely living up to our name! Thanks for watching!
Love the helm chairs
Ha Ha - right? We ordered STIDD chairs 2 months ago...they shipped them this week. So tall director's chairs it was! Hopefully the rest of the cruise to Mexico we will have real chairs!
I can't imagine how frustrating it must have been working thru the shaft issues. I'm happy to see you in San Francisco, on your way south. I'm sure that you're aware that a s**t day on a boat whether in the water or on the hard is better than the best day landlocked as I am. looking forward to the next installment.
It was definitely a stressful saga, but so worth it to be back in the water! And we have to remind ourselves how lucky we really are! Another episode coming soon!
The third time was the charm unfortunately. Glad you are in the water and moving along!
It was!! But so glad we got it done right.
Hmm, we forgot to do this ceremony when we changed our name. Will it still work after a couple of years sailing under the new name ? We do worship Poseidon, but that is mostly because the weather apps in Greece are complete crap. 😀 Will Prosecco do as well ?
I think after a couple of years is totally fine- you just may want to add an extra bottle to be sure. And Prosecco is perfect, especially if you are in the med. it’s never too late! Do it!
Thank you for posting videos on the hard time you had. Hope your vibration issues worked out.
Thanks! Yep- solved! That video is coming out this week!
That boat rounded Cape Horn twice according to nordhavn website
She did!! Maybe we'll make that a third time one day!
What marina are you guys at ?
We were in Cap Sante, Anacortes. Now we're in San Francisco Bay - just got here!
@@mvnoeta have fun heading south .. do a survey next week on a trawler coming to the dark side after some years
@@rlpatton1970Good luck! You’ll love the dark side!
Great naming ceremony 😊
Thanks -it was a lot of fun!
Oh my goodness y’all! I’m so excited to see you on the water again. Keep the faith❤
Oh my gosh, we are so happy to be floating again!
You are living my dream... except for all the expenses.. :)
Right?! We need to get cruising, so our expenses are just fuel and tacos! :)
Fingers crossed on resolving the wobble. Cruising South will be child’s play compared to bathing Gillian!
I cried the whole way through the episode So happy for you
I hope they were happy tears! :)
@@mvnoeta you betcha
Another great video! Thanks for sharing. Love the smiley face!
Thanks! We do too!!
I just realized you guys are in Washington! Hello from Lake Tapps!
Hi hi neighbor! Just for a bit longer hopefully! Then off to warm Mexican waters!
Sorry about the shaft wobble! Damn,
Yeah - just in a holding pattern right now. We'll know more today!
Too bad you guys weren't running your YT channel when you answered my May day call from my handheld VHF and came and saved my life in Alamar in LA Cruz. But, I am sure I was not dressed appropriately. Well done kids!
No kidding! Of course I would have felt a little bad following you into the ambulance with a camera 😅
I Love James McKnight!
Great episode and thank you for sharing. Did the survey pick up on all of the things that needed to be addressed, i.e., engine mounts etc?
Thanks for watching! Yep, we caught the engine mount problem and most of the other items while on the survey. Of course, it's like an onion, you start opening things up and you're bound to find more. We are currently dealing with a shaft issue that we didn't know was a problem (because of the broken engine mounts). Stay tuned for more info on that!
Got room for an Aqua drive system?
May need to look into that! Looking into all of our options. The alignment is just not working out right now. Today's project includes lots of coupling analysis. Stay tuned!
@@mvnoetait isolates the compressions between the prop shaft and the engine/transmission . Loads on the from the drive components transfer that to the engine/trans/mounts. The other thing you should know in the long term is what the shaft material is. A grade of Stainless, Aquamet 19 or 22 ? This can help determine the “strain” the shaft can endure and bending moments for different grades of shafting. Love your story. Cheers , Greg aboard Twilight Anacortes marina
Thanks!! I'll have to ask about the material, it's an Australian equivalent to the Aquamet I believe - but would be good to know. We have it back at the prop shop today - turns out they may not have fine tuned the coupling correctly. Hopefully that fixes it!
Great video again!! Any thoughts on final shaft alignment has to be done with the boat in the water?
Yep- we went to do that, and that’s when we found ‘the wobble’. We had to haul back out, get the coupler, shaft and prop all straightened, and hopefully we can splash (again) soon to check it in the water (again). 😅 Wish us luck!!
Best of luck!! Fingers crossed it’s perfect next time. Thank you for the response! Any and all info on the process is much appreciated! Cheers!
Love the smile on bow bulb 😉, Living permanently on trawler since 20 years with my wife and kids changed 4 time of trawler and know well what you did and experience, 2 years ago we bought a Selene 62 and we did very similar job (prop shaft off, stabilizers rebuild, sand-blast antifouling ... and much more) I know how is frustrated to launch and discover all not going like expected and need to do the job again 😤 Be strong!!! Boats, the list never stop
Thanks for commiserating with us @huguespor3591 - sounds like you know how it goes! A Selene 62 is a lovely boat, I'm sure it was worth it!
I like this type of content. Videos showing tasks to make boat operational again.
Thanks! Glad to hear it! We have sooo many projects to go. So, stand by!
Nice to see things moving along
It's starting to feel like home finally!
So much better audio. Thanks for the hard work.
Thanks! Appreciate the advice!
Cannot hear what you are saying when the loud music is playing. Really like when you describe what is happening. Drinks look good. Music is still unnecessary and too load compared to everything else.
Love the trouble shooting narrative and results. Overall, I enjoy the channel a lot.
Are y’all back on the water yet? I hope so, I know you can’t wait❤
We WERE! Then another issue arose and we had to haul out again 😭 We’ll get back in next week (again!)
Love your videosssss! Keep em coming! Thanks for the content :)
Thanks! Lots more coming soon!
Voice over please, not background music.
Thanks for all your comments today Jack. These are all old videos, not originally intended for anyone other than close friends and family. You’ll see in all of our last 16 videos the voice overs and content have been much more clear. On these old ones, we chose to leave them online (even without perfect editing) rather than delete. Hope that makes sense.
Please add voice in future videos. Thanks for the video.
What is this video about?
I wish you All look 👍🇩🇰
Thanks so much!!
DO YOU MISS THE 50 YET??
Not yet…she was a great boat, but I’m loving the 57! ❤❤
OMG! Looks like a gooey mess! I’m sure you’ll be happy with the end product. Andiamo (N5704) is going on the hard late October for similar work.
