In most retail stores, when items ring up as a penny, they've been removed from inventory and the store will not sell them to you. If you're lucky, you might get someone that either doesn't know that, or doesn't care. But odds are, they'll just refuse to sell it.

I work at Home Depot. When items drop down to a penny the store can no longer sell it to the customers, so they take every items that’s a penny and discards them. If an associate tries to sell you the item knowing that it’s not allowed they would be potentially terminated. Either this is fake or the store didn’t do their inventory checks properly.

Youre not supposed to be buying those and it could actually get you banned from the store whether its home depot or lowes, theyre priced at 0.01 because theyre not being sold anymore and theyre being sent back the manufacturer as a refund/credit and dont ask employees for help, you'll only get them in trouble by doing this.

anything pennied out at a home depot CANNOT BE SOLD! this happens to clearence items that have to be moved out for one reason or another, but the registers will block you from buying said item.
