Splendid! What would we do without Serge in Ukraine!
Good guy and great craftsman!👍
@ Absolutely! Very dry sense of humor evidenced in his RUclips videos.
I'd like to make a negative comment, and I hate doing that, but I'm not understanding how your video appears as though it is to give youtubers an indication of how good the sound is from your specialised audio equipment (and specialised/unique it is), but as far as the sound in the video goes, it looks/sounds like you are just using the mic in your smartphone! - which has *very* poor reproduction capabilities compared to the equipment you have good reason to show off with. Am I missing something? I would've thought you would've gone down the path of either: - use the analogue output of your cartridge preamp to go into a quality-spec A/D converter, and thence through a digital input to your computer, at 192kb/s or more OR - use a couple of high-end flat response mono mics or boundary-effect mics, and set up your audio room with measured minimal reflections, and record the played sound via a low-noise mic preamp then again into your A/D interface to the computer At least those ways you will only be restricted by the bandwidth/digital limitations of the size audio file allowed onto your youtube video. As it stands, you have a meh-quality sound marred even more by by the phasing effects of moving the smartphone around! But I love what you've done with your equipment - it must've achieved, and some, what the best of the best was in the 50s.
Having been in front and behind the microphone as a professional classical musician, I'm well aware that the sound of my hifi set up will never be accurately replicated in this platform. You would've saved yourself a lot of effort had you bothered to read my "about" section where I explicitly said that these videos are merely for "proof of concept." That's why in every upload my description starts with "This video is a supplement to this blog upload - html link." 🙂
@@jelabs Thanks. I take your point. However, to reflect your intention accurately, maybe you should make the subject of your video to be something about your equipment, rather than the title of a classic jazz album, as the album title will attract music afficionados who will then be immediately dismayed upon hearing the token reproduction quality - such casual searchers will not find your 'about' section - indeed, as neither did I. Ie, you need the youtube engine place you in the 'hifi equipment' search category, rather than the 'classic jazz artists' one. All the best with it!
Beautiful setup and sound
Wow, I really love this, I am in the process of resurrecting my HI-FI system. My first record was recommended by my drum teacher Mr Grahame Morgan in 1963 Art Blakey-Jazz Messengers-Impulse-IL30794 I am so glad I kept all my Blue Note Stuff, well my father packed it all up and stored it all away till I came home from my adventures overseas. What fabulous set up. Regards Phil Howard.
Thanks and have fun setting up your hifi!

@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 - Thank you, Ken!
Hello, I enjoy your videos and blog. I have a question if possible, I would be interested to know if you have ever used the UTC A-11 transformer (primary connection 500 ohms, secondary 50 000 ohms, gain of 10 = 20 db) for the regular version of the Denon DL-103 in comparison to the Altec 4722. Jean Hiraga recommends this uses for regular Denon DL-103. Thanking you in advance Kind regards,
I never had the honor of meeting Jean Hiraga but he is a very well respected figure in audio! He introduced SE triode amps to the western world way back in the 70s. If he's recommending the UTC A11, then it must be good! Unfortunately, I have no experience with that UTC. Thanks for the kind words about my channel and blog!
@@jelabs Thank you for your interesting feedback and welcome to your channel. Indeed, J. Hiraga has contributed to bringing back into fashion in particular the use in single-ended mono-triode assembly of the Western Electric 300b of the 30's with a multi-amplified system with Altec, Onken and Western Electric horns. In addition, Bill Evans is without doubt my favorite Jazz pianist with Erroll Garner. So I am an attentive French reader of Jean Hiraga's articles until today, he exchanges widely with our community. His general recommendations and in particular for the classic Denon DL-103 are: A first generation Thorens TD 124 MK1. A steel SME 3012 Serie I arm. According to him, and after various tests, this arm reveals all the qualities of the DL-103, in particular after, the more than 40 grams of dynamic mass of this arm. A Denon DL -103 with a "retip" Fritz Gyger diamond and boron cantilever at Van den Hul in Holland. UTC A-11 transformers. Kind regards
I agree with the TD124/heavy iron platter recommendation. I use a TD124 and replaced the light platter on my MKII with the earlier heavy iron. The Series 1 SME 3012 is a very rare tonearm, I've only seen it in pictures. I only differ with regards to modifying the DL103. Honestly, I prefer the normal DL103 (older models sound even sweeter) to the upgraded DL103R. I've also never been impressed by exotic cantilevers and stylus profiles. For ex: I acquired my Supex SD900 with a ruby cantilever + exotic profile stylus and it sounded very dry and sterile. I only enjoyed it after it was reverted back to original specs. Same with SPUs, I've heard the higher end Reference, A75, A80, Meister Silver, Synergy, etc. and my favorite is still the SPU-G or SPU-GM with alum cantilever + nude conical stylus. I don't mind tracking a conical stylus up to 4 grams. But I'd worry about tracking an elliptical or more complex stylus profile over 2 grams. But as usual in this hobby, YMMV!
Sounds good llike a good horn should.. nice electonics!
Thank you!
How old are your Altec speakers?
They are green hammertone finish, so perhaps mid 50s to early 60s.
@@jelabs That's what I figured also.
Particularly nice!
Thanks!
Damn, love your setup. Also, I watched the Darko video with Devon Turnbull-congrats on getting some recognition for the important role that you've played all these years on the resurgence of vintage classic audio components! I was going to post the video and a shout out on AudioKarma, but I decided against it. Too many crusty negative judgemental perspectives lol...
Thanks for the kind words! Devon gives credit to all his collaborators and people who've inspired him. A rare breed in this day and age! Unfortunately, we can't please everyone.
Thanks for posting, your blog post was also an interesting read thanks for taking the time to write it.
My pleasure and thanks for visiting!🙂
Your channel is so great. I'm getting turned on to music I haven't heard before! Thank You!
You're most welcome and thanks for the kind comment!
Great setup you have thank you for sharing, Is the lack of antiskate on that arm noticeable at all ?
Honestly, I haven't used anti-skate in over 2 decades. But then, most of my cartridges track at 2.5 grams or greater. Also, IME, with longer tonearms it's superfluous. Just like anything in the audio hobby, YMMV!
@@jelabs Thanks for the reply, its really helpful. 👍

You have an absolutely amazing system! I’d love to see a video walk-through of all the components. Clearly you built and hand fit much. So incredible to see!
Thanks! Not sure if I can do a walk through in video format but if you click the links for each component in the description, it will take you back to my blog on how I restored a turntable, built an amp complete with schematics + other pertinent details.
I love your setups!
Thank you!
Sounds wonderful. Where can I buy finished product Finemet FM-MCT1 in chassis like yours?

so beautiful speaker and rig ❤
Thank you!
Great Violin tone! And of course sublime performance from my favourite Ukrainian Violinist! I have the same record set !
That Gray Research turntable is really something! Of course, the rest of the room is full of wonders, too... Lovely sound to this recording, JE!
Thank you! This is my favorite recording of the Korngold.
What a great idea for a channel! Did you make those components? Would love to hear about them
Thank you! I restored the 50s era turntable/tonearm/cartridge and built the tube preamp and power amp using pre-WWII tubes. The speaker cabinet was built by a friend based on my design and I installed classic Altec drivers from the 50s using a crossover network I configured. More info about the hifi rig build here - jelabs.blogspot.com/2024/10/je-labs-mono-hifi-2024.html - I hope you enjoy reading it!🙂
Even on the internet this sounds amazing. I'd love to have a DIY mono setup, but I've never done anything like this and it all seems overwhelming.
I've been doing DIY for at least three decades and have built my stereo and mono hifi systems to suit my requirements. Perhaps it's not for everyone. But IME, the time and effort I invested to enjoy my LP and CD collection has been worthwhile.
@@jelabs Yes, I've been following you for a while on various platforms and like your work. Any tips for a good starting place? Not necessarily a mono system; just a good place to begin the DIY journey. It seems like no matter where one starts it leads to another need/rabbit hole. For example, I'd like to try a 2a3 amp, but then I'd need speakers that it could drive. My easiest speakers to drive are 93dB and 10 Ohm. So, then I've got two projects!
@@jmal5390 - The Simple 45 - jelabsarch.blogspot.com/2012/06/je-labs-simple-452a3.html - is probably the easiest project in my blog. But it's not a kit, you'll have to source all the parts on your own which can be challenging depending on how much you know about electronics. I also can't do remote troubleshooting if you encounter problems. That said, as long as you listen within reasonable levels a 2 wpc amp can produce pretty high SPLs with 93dB sensitive speakers with benign impedance characteristics.
I feel the same way. My lack of knowledge - even after gaining some knowledge from reading all of Joe’s blogs - I have a few books coming at Christmas that might help to guide me further 📚📖
Sounds good!
What amp is that?
It's an SE46 amp I built, more info - jelabs.blogspot.com/2024/10/je-labs-mono-hifi-2024.html
I bought some Jii’s recently. After redoping the tweeters one sounds gorgeous but one has a faulty woofer and I’m having a hard time identifying the cause or a replacement drivers😢
If I had the speakers in front of me, I could probably help. However, remote troubleshooting, IME, is mere speculation. Hopefully you'll find someone local who can help you. Good luck!
❤❤
Hi, ive been watching your vids. for 2 to 3 hours this morning. The equipment and variety of music is great. The sound on RUclips isn't really good. With all that great gear to be heard, you should invest in a really good microphone for your videos...😮
Point well taken! However, as stated in my "about section," I upload videos as a proof of concept of projects and/or supplement to my blog. Besides, I'm not here to sell anything.🙂I do this to inspire people to DIY and take the path less traveled because I love music! I've been on both sides of the microphone (as a classical musician/performer and also in a recording/mixing booth) and IMHO, I wouldn't use youtube videos for evaluating hifi equipment. Best to evaluate in person, just like going to a live concert!
Hi JE - I am interested to see what you'll do with your revived mono setup! My system has been mono for 2 years now, also with Altecs - just not the 604 :) I've recorded/published a video on my channel - from the same LP, played on my mono system.
Superb!
Thanks!

@@jelabs I'll see you in the spring for sure. Mutually looking forward to it!
Always a quality clip, great tune machine
Very kind words, thank you!
Interesting, never thought to try my 32s with my 755Cs
As mentioned in the blog, I hardly used the 32 horn/SSD1800 combo. The 755Es can stand on their own. That said, IMHO, the top end airiness of the 32 horn (when properly implemented) is second only to the ribbon-like but extremely fragile Altec 3000 horn tweeter.
@@jelabs I think I might try this as my 414s are currently in storage.
