Very simple walk-through of a very simple antenna setup. I thought this might be useful to other newbies getting into VHF/UHF and/or HF frequencies with their Technician or General licenses. Many thanks to all the Elmers out there helping others learn and enjoy the hobby - I sure am learning a lot from you!

CX-5 seats don't fold completely flat, so I bought a 2'x4'x5/8" plywood board, a 4"x1"x4' board cut to level the plane, a 1"x1" bracing stick and a few wood screws and some glue. Then I laid another board I had handy on top, to extend the platform to a full 6' and put a 3" thick foam mattress that's 2' wide and 6' long on top. It's incredibly comfortable under a sleeping bag, and it makes sleep...

Maybe wrap the bars with electrical tape?
@@smccrory That’s what I ended up doing. Not sure why but even with the clamp really tight it was still loose.
My one and only bike....wish I could have it back. Mine had a Rev Counter too but was the same bike, same colour too.
Tell me. What is the OEM number for this part?
These bikes could have a gilmore belt drive installed easliey i think.
These bikes make sense! "F" them big harley hogs!

lol. My better half says that tank makes it look like a pregnant guppy. I told her to just WAIT until it’s finished. I SO love cafe bikes and racers. Is that a 4 gal tank? Thanks for this vid!
Is the actual original light switch disengaged? It’s a personal choice but would have replaced that switch, but understand I am new to the motorcycle restoration game. Thanks for this video. I’m liking and subscribing.
INCREDIBLY helpful video. Your experience on this shines. Very logical
Hi, how are you feeling now? Can you show us some CT scans of your neck before after surgery, now? Or MRI?
I'm not doing too badly - still riding motorcycles, was out for 320 miles a few weeks ago and a lazy 200 miles ride on Sunday and didn't have any issues with my neck, shoulders, arms or hands. Latest X-Rays were several years ago and showed the disks are still where they started and no degrading conditions. Before surgery, I had one severely degraded level and spinal impingement, a moderately severe level above it, a moderate one above that and a light one above that. We decided to attack all 4 in one surgery while the hood was up.
@@smccrory Thank you for your answer. Which levels? Do you have any numbness or pain in your fingers or hands?
Hi Scott, I'm in the U K. and have been following your spine video updates. I have been having neck problems for many years. Had a discectomy at C6/7 in 2008. I now have problems at C4/5 and C5/6. What i was wondering is how are you now 9 years post op? Germany could be on the agenda, luckily my wife speaks German like a native!!! And we know the area around Bogen having holidayed 5 miles away Hope finds you well and prospering. Thank you for your inspirational videos. Regards, M R
I'm going pretty well, thank you. Rode another 320 miles on my motorcycle with buddies to the Ohio River and back last weekend without issues, and my lower back is coming along well after two ADRs were installed 4 months ago in Plano Texas. I'd do both all over again. Physical therapy is super important, also focus on healing and patience after surgery.
Well done, are you going to do further videos about your lumbar spine? I've found unfortunately that in the U.K the health system is further behind the times than the U.S!!!! With only a few private surgeons doing ADR'S. Keep well and carry on.
@@MichaelRivett-x9s I don't think I'll do videos of my lower back - laziness maybe, and also don't want to steer anyone to procedures inappropriate to *their* situation, but also happy to provide real data points to help others be more informed. I feel your pain about the UK medical system - I have a friend near London who loves the system for preventative care but has to wait a bunch for the higher tech stuff. That's why I went to Germany 9 years ago, and stayed in the US 4 months ago - fortunately spinal arthroplasty is building steam and insurance companies are coming to their senses little by little. Very best wishes to you in all cases. I'd say, that if you can afford it, consider traveling to ProSpine in Bogen, Texas Back Institute in Plano or another highly experienced center, and consider paying out of pocket for the best care in the world.
Does it fit on a 390?
❤thanks!
can install in duke 790?
Probably. I don't know the Duke line but believe they use the same electronics. You'll still have to get a feature unlock from the dealer, so I recommend calling them to be sure.
Many many thanks.
Thx
can i use this 790 console on my ktm 390
Sktr mna godmn cocu.
Hello from France ! I just installed the cruise control switch on my 790 2020 but when I turn on the ignition, I don't see the yellow light on the dashboard. I don't undestand if it's : 1) the ktm dealer's computer 2) left/up/down or 2) and after 1) ? Thanks.
I’m not a KTM tech but did you buy the CC option/unlock? If not, take it to the dealer for the program flash. You have to have both the switch AND the CC unlock from KTM to enjoy cruise control 👍
Man that turned out really nice and it was an actual restoration! Imagine that…😂
Jo Ann sells multiple types of that foam. Make sure to by thicker to thickest one to prevent sleeping on plywood!
II had one of these. Honda,s CB 72 In 1967 , I took it to the dealer for a service, on collecting my bike, the ride home was poor to say the least , the timing was out, so I checked the timing as you have done in the video, and found it to be correct! But this was a tick over! As an apprentice electrician at the time I-made up a timing light using a neon lamp the type you find in power sockets. They strike at 90 volts ie it lights up , now you may know that when the points open there is a high voltage produced across the open points this can be utilised to light the Neon light , I made up a lead with a 100k ohms resistor In series with the Neon one end being connected to the frame of the engine and the other end the resistor connected to the points one at a time, (you will need a darken room to see it flashing) Start the engine a d place the light/ Neon next to the timing marks on the flywheel , increase speed of engine until it reaches the fully advanced position, if it doesn’t if this is not lining up with the full advanced position readjust the points by rotating the plate the points are attached to until it is correct the tighten the screws to fix the plate, this adjustment takes into account of the advance/ retard mechanism for ware, as it a mechanical system you may need to adjust tick over afterwards . You could use a timing light of course, but in 1967 we didn’t have such luxury. My bike worked a treat after that!

Hi Mr. Scott! Hope you are doing better. I replied on my comment that I wanted to connect with you. However i think you have missed it. I am 24 years old musician, from India. And i would be really thankful you can reply to these questions: 1. Can I see your MRI before surgery? I am doing some research for my spinal condition and it would be really helpful. 2. Also, you mentioned there are some good doctors you came across in India for Disc replacements. Can you please help me with that? I am really in need of this. I am getting no idea on Google. Hope to see your new video soon. Also, if possible, please let me know if we can connect for a chat too. Sending you good health wishes from India!

The last minute safed my life 🙏 Very helpful
That's awesome! I hope you enjoy your KTM as much as I still am!
Nice video smccory! I found your educational tutorial while in a desperate state. I own many Kahr pistols in 9 and 40. They are my everyday carry and I am usually well pleased. I gave my son a Kahr P40 and after operationally testing it, I certified it fit for duty carry. The first thing he did upon receipt was attempt to unload the pistol so that his young son could touch it. Shazam! Same loaded stoppage with the round stuck between the ejector and the barrel hood. Not a problem with shorted FMJ practice ammunition, but was the same issue you had with high end Remington and Federal self defense ammo (a tad longer). I studied your video and then surmised that there may be two ways to skin the cat. So I shortened the ejector with a small file. Long Skinny metal ejector pinned into the frame. I was careful not to scratch the polymer frame by inserting plastic between the ejector and the frame so the file would only work to shorten the ejector. A couple of thousandths shorter ejector provided more room for the loaded cartridge case to eject by the barrel hood. Fixed! About 30 short strokes with the small file and a slight rounding of the flat ejector towards the pistol center to provide another thousandth and all is well. The Kahr back up! BTW, this malfunction is insidious because it is hard to detect in a normal range operation of shorter FMJ and no malfunctions with the Self Defense carry ammo. A malfunction with the longer Self Defense ammo and remedial action "Tap Rack Bang" and the pistol would be down hard until you applied a screwdriver to remove the loaded case. In this case, I declare that Kahr built a faulty pistol with a slightly out of specifications ejector that allowed for a very easy fix. Those that cry shoot it more (200 rounds brake in) don't know. Smccory was my inspiration. Thanks!
Hi Scott, I really appreciate this video. I too had a ADR but at only two levels. C5-6 and C6-7. The problem is that I actually needed the additional two you had. Now 6 months later, I’m not where I wanted primarily because half the work I needed was done. My question to you is, did you have any spinal canal/cord compression? I really wish here in the US we had better trained physicians and insurance companies that didn’t give us such a hard time. Thanks again!
You're very welcome and thank you for the kind words. I did have moderate-to-severe spinal stenosis at C67 and minor-to-moderate at C56. Some of the herniated disc material was separating and causing nerve impingement when I turned in a certain way, and I'd get random pain and shocks just standing and talking with people. The two levels above those didn't have much stenosis but were losing disc height and annulus core. You probably know there isn't a disc approved for more than 2 levels in the US, so anyone wanting more pays out of pocket for 3+. This is why I went to Germany at the time - they were most experienced with 3 and 4 level ADR operations, and three surgeons said I should have at least three levels operated on. Nowadays I think there are enough patients in the US who have paid out of pocket for the bigger operations, and more surgeons I'd trust to do that many. The challenge is once you have a couple discs in you, getting more is an out of pocket expense, and at that point the choice of a US or European surgeon is more nuanced depending on one's trust, ability to travel, availability of support, cost and so on. I haven't seen any studies in the works to prove out 3+ levels to the FDA, so I think this is the US situation we'll be in for a while, unfortunately, despite clinically provable results from overseas.
I am really really waiting for your new videos. How’s your life now? How’s your spine? Please upload a video soon! :)
Hi There! I really should do another video soon. My neck is OK - not great but SO much better than before the surgery. I have full range of motion and all the devices look fantastic on X-Rays. I do have neuropathy down my arms and hands but my lower back has gotten worse, so I'm working with Texas Back Institute to get their analysis and proposed next steps. I think my arm and hand issues are from compression of the C7 level from the elevated stack of discs above, so I wouldn't be surprised to get a replacement or fusion there someday. My lumbar issues slowed down my 2023 motorcycle riding season and I skipped enduros and only went into the woods 3-4 times for the year and a few thousand miles on my road bike, so I'm hoping to find remedies and squeeze more years or riding out of this body!

Good to know that you are doing better! I am 24 years old, from India. And lately i have been suffering a lot. I got better but again a relapse. Despite the fact it has "electric" right there in the name, it's a fairly common misconception that dielectric grease is capable of conducting electricity. In actual fact, dielectric grease is an insulator and doesn't conduct electricity
You're right, and I learned that later :-). It's useful in keeping moisture away from connections. In fact, it turns out the Beta (Italian dirt bike) motorcycle community discovered years ago the factory doesn't regularly do this to its ECU connections, leading to some nasty oil injection failures, so the first thing we all do now is pack dielectric grease into every connection we can get to.
Hi, I'm writing from Italy, would you kindly have the measurements in cm? Thank you
I'm afraid I sold my CX-5 a few months after that video to obtain more towing capacity, and repurposed the boards for something else. 2' = 61 cm. 4' = 122 cm. 1" = 2.54 cm. 5/8" = 1.6 cm. What I did was just measure the longest and widest boards that could fit, and made sure the platform was thick enough and braced enough to hold me flat.
@@smccrory Thank you
Hi Scott - been watching your series, thanks for the content. I have a similar age, work, and spine issues. I feel like I know you as a friend… haha. Anyway, I have a 2 level fusion at c34 and 45. Now I am having radiculopathy at c7 due to degradation/flattening of that disc. So the surgeon suggested a minimally invasive foraminotomy or ADR. Initially I said let’s do the minimally invasive surgery, but been thinking it’s just symptom relief and postponing the inevitable, so I scheduled another consult to discuss the ADR. Did you mention that once you get an ADR that you can’t get another MRI? Just asking because as you know, once you have spine surgery, it seems as if you become a patient for life. They did say if I did the minimally invasive surgery, that they could fuse it down the road if necessary, but would have to do c6 also, but of course, I would have limited mobility. I’m also 3 months out from a hemilaminectomy at L5, still a little sore/arthritic, but at least the sciatica is gone. Thanks in advance and stay strong!
I'm glad the videos are helpful! Once you get ADR(s), MRIs are trickier to avoid imaging artifacts that make it hard to see what's really in there, BUT most radiology departments are trained to turn the power down and try different things for better images. CT can also be an option, so I've heard. I do think that most spine surgeries are just the start of more, because they either remove disc material to reduce nerve compression and then allow the disk to continue its "death," or they fuse a level and place more stress on adjacent levels, or simple the fact one has spinal arthritis means more degradation is likely as we age no matter what we do. That said, our spines don't seen to auto fuse as "well" as other mammals, so surgery is often better than just living with degrading conditions anyway. That's the situation I have with my lumbar spine - I also had a L5/S1 laminectomy 4 years ago and it helped, but it's still degrading and I'm likely to go for an ADR or fusion within the next 6 months, because like you implied, chronic sciatica sucks!
What do you think will that work in 390 adv?
Hello, where do you indicate, software was enabled, by screen or by pc at the dealership?
The dealership has to enable the software using their KTM service tool plugged into the motorcycle's CANBus diagnostic port. There's a fee for the feature in addition to the new control assembly. I think my all-in cost was about $300 USD if I remember correctly. It was totally worth it for me - electronic cruise control makes long highway stretches much less awful.
Hola, donde ud indica , software fue habilitado, Por pantalla o por pc en concesionario?
I just started a restoration on a 1975 CB125s. It is a barn find with only 844 miles on it. Cool little bikes.
That's awesome! I loved mine and kind of sorry I sold it, but he really wanted a vintage bike to learn on and I was ready to slim down my collection.
how are you doing now 7 years later?
All the levels I had done are still in great shape. There is, I believe, some stack compression on the level below causing some radial neuropathy in my hands and arms but it's not bad enough for me to consider surgery. I'd still do the surgery all over again, but would probably prefer a US-side center simply because travel is so much easier. Still, ProSpine in Germany is pretty far up the quality chain, I'd say.
@@smccrory already had C5/6, C/7 done in 21, now Oct 8th going in for C3 to C7. C5/C6 came loose and didnt fuse
Hi. Is this trail doable with a dual-sport bike? Honda crf250L rally? I'm a 2 year street rider looking for off-road practice that's relatively easy/safe.
Yes, totally - I highly recommend the New Straitsville Loop for dirt beginners, then add Kackelmaker when you're bored and want some variety before taking on the Main Corridor. Bring a buddy if possible, and of course get a pass (at Begley's campground or many other places) and have fun. Just remember the trails are bidirectional so keep your eyes up.
I have a 2019 cx-5 and I bought a shikibuton for the back but when the seat folds down , it’s not flat and the rivet really hurts my back. Can you explain how you built this and made it level? I could really use the help, thanks
I started by parking my car on level ground and placed a 4' level's tip on the folded seat, and held the other end up at the back of the compartment until the bubble was level. I then measured how high up that was, which was pretty close to 4". I decided to use 2'x4'x5/8" plywood as a platform and brace it at the end with a "one by four" board, and brace it again in the middle, basically just using what I had on hand. Finally, to extend my headroom, I laid another 2'x4'x5/8" board behind the driver's seat and rested foam on it. It worked great! I've since traded the CX5 for a Honda Passport for more room and towing capacity, but that setup was perfect for my uses at the time.
My bike it have already the cruise control switch, but doesn't work, may i need perhaps switch on the cable? Cheers
Did you pay for the CC unlock? That's an additional charge from KTM and they have to plug your bike into their diagnostic tool to enable the feature.
@@smccrory No i didn't paid, thanks for the answer!! Cheers
Hello brother nice and informative video can you please suggest if it can be replicated on 390 adventure as it has the same cruise control sign in the speedo console its 2023 model, please suggest thanks 🙏🏻
I'm afraid I don't know - I only have a '19 790, but if the controls look the same, their wiring is probably the same, and possibly the activation process is as well.

What surgeon did your surgery
Dr. Rudolph Bertagnoli of ProSpine in Bogen Germany.
@smccrory can I ask why he choice that style pro disc?
@@thelenny38 with 4 levels in play, he wanted a semi-constrained design to avoid excessive range of motion that could cause discs to migrate or worse.
Thanks for posting. This was my first enduro since maybe 1983. I make a cameo in your vid amongst the riders gathered behind the starting line.
