The national anthem is generally a patriotic song that evokes and praises the history, traditions and struggles of its people, recognized by the government of a country as its official song, or People use many common practices.
The national anthem is usually written in the country's most popular language, be it nominally or officially. Countries with more than one official language often have multiple versions of the national anthem, as the Swiss national anthem has different words for each language of the country (French, German, Italian and Romansh). On the other hand, the South African national anthem is unique in that five out of eleven official languages are used in the same national anthem (each of which is a stanza). Another multilingual country, Spain has no words for the national anthem La Marcha Real although in 2007 a national contest for lyric writing was held.
