Nick Stuart: Journey with SOTG, Dealing with Reputation, Embracing Teammates | Ep 70
Nick Stuart is a College, Club, and World Championship. He was introduced to the sport by his dad and grew up playing in Gainseville, FL. In high school he played on mixed teams with his dad before playing Vicious Cycle and Ronin. He has since played for Carleton CUT, Sub Zero, Revolver, and Sockeye. We may also have a Nick Bomb of news to share about who we may or may not play for in 2025.
We've been meaning to bring Nick on since WUC tryouts. We reconnected after recording Episode 68, because he can relate to a lot of Kins' experience of being told to change his behavior, being told his behavior is wrong, and being unable to escape preconceived opinions.

I like that hot-take about throwing making you worse at ultimate and that time would be better served if spent on defensive footwork. Definitely an area I struggle with, are there any specific workouts or drills to improve footwork on defense? Great episode and great guest!
2024; better, faster, more painted fingernails
Nick Stuart is the hardest player I ever marked up against in 10 years playing ultimate at every level.
The game has definitely evolved since 2016. You can definitely argue that 2024 would win, but I think it's a mistake to use "style of play" as the argument. The conditions of 2024 Worlds makes it tough to judge how they would have played in calmer conditions. If you look at his throw selection, Rowan was not playing like Rowan from Truckstop 2022/2023. Likely because of the wind. The 2024 team had plenty of "shooter" types on the team too... they might have possessed in calmer conditions, but 🤷♂. On points received of semi finals, the 2016 O line had 2 turns and their swing line had 1. In finals I believe they had 1 O line turn total. As a coach, I've over indexed to the 2024 style to a fault, and we just saw Rhino win with a much more 2016 style than 2024. The 2016 team could play big ball, because they were impossible to matchup with and had more than enough skill. 2016 Jimmy and Ashlin would still be the best throwers on the 2024 team. I'd be curious to see how much trouble the 2024 D line would give the 2016 offense. IMO the 2016 defense would give the 2024 offense more trouble than vice versa. Ashlin, Prime Jimmy, Goose, Beau, Cassidy, Danny Karlinsky, Joel Schlachet is harder to match up against than Malks, Mac, Quinn, Rowan, Ben, Kocher, & Trent IMO. The quality of opponent in 2016 was just higher as well. That was the tail end for the primes of the best Japanese players we've ever seen. I think the best Canadian roster ever is from 2008. The general opinion is that the 2024 team is deeper, but I'm really not so sure. Knowing Osgar, Jack, Joe White, and Babbitt didn't even tryout and Bansfield and Spicer dropped out definitely makes me wonder what the 2024 2nd team would look like.
Nick was a really good guest , I think US 2024 STARCHES 2016 ( we have to take into account evolution of the game ) Agree with Kins what you should do whatever strategy is most effective, but at a super beginner level Zone can be boring but at high level tournaments they should know how to break zones
2016 >>>
22:30, hw 40:58, responsibility of own reactions. 43:28, Mikey's response 59:30, regarding the discussion on expressing feedback, the ripping off the bandaid analogy is actually really helpful, considering a story I heard about Dan Ariely and his burns he had treated. The nurse preferred to rip off the bandages quickly, which he felt was really painful, but she felt less emotional pain as it was over quickly. He preferred her to slowly remove the bandages bc it wasn't as painful that way, but the nurse found it distressing. The analogy is that the bandages need to come off, the words need to be said. But whether you choose to do it nicely or not is something completely different, and sometimes what's comfortable for the person giving feedback (ie, angrily barking out an order) isn't comfortable for the person getting feedback. And vice versa. And maybe some people will just be misaligned this way. But the words need to be exchanged for the team to grow. So either you accept that issue or you just avoid communication altogether "Should be friends with everyone on the team?" A couple perspectives - Mikey, it's not necessary for winning, but it's preferable as an environment for a team to be on. - Kins, you won't be good friends with everyone, but it's important to be friendly - 1:01:37, Quinn, it's more important to be open and communicative and not just be fake friendly. Fake friendly is bad for a team's effectiveness. - Nick, 1:03:08. More important to be good teammates than good friends 1:59:35, who tf is self Triad that was my question yo 😂. Anyways, Jack Hatchet, Christian Foster, Lucas Dahmans(??),
dream team vs Redeem team type debate. Game has changed and sadly cant be compared imo. That era was still iso ultimate, hitting deeps, not as much small ball. I still think 2016 wins both on paper and in game. 2024 definitely had more pure role players. things get interesting though if Dylan, Jack and Jeff Babbitt cleated up this cycle
Team USA Men's 2016 vs 2024. 2024 wins simply because they know how to play low-turnover frisbee. There are small-ball skills like cutting patterns, agility, throws (offhand backhand) but most importantly it's a mentality. Jimmy is amazing but he is a shooter. Being the best shooter in that constant turnover era was a boon. Today, holstering wins. Go watch old games with the top teams from that era. By today's standards the decision making is embarrassing.
The depth of US 2024 team is just nuts , they could probably beat 2016 with just over half the roster
This is such an interesting topic. As an older player I'm trying to avoid most, if not all, physical play. I believe there is a place for a delicate balance. Ultimate doesn't have a pay level that warrants that type of physicality of play, Yet!
Hi
Get me on to talk about throwing!!! Id be so down to get in depth about it!
Deal! We’d love to have you on.
I think for both USA and Canada they do Select teams until Masters, I think that changed in 2016-2018 for both. If Im not mistaken USAU kept the Club Representation for Masters mainly for logistics and they dont need to comply with any other world Qualifications. Dont quote me on this thooo
I traded jerseys with Anthony from Japan GMO, seemed like a nice guy. Would've liked to say hi too (the thought crossed my mind that you might be there), sent a few clips from the pod to the team leading up to WUMC
Love how this lesson is so concise.
If there’s a topic you want us to hit let us know!
Man, I've been listening to you guys lately and I was at WMUC with the Venezuelan team and I did not know you were there. I was one of the guys playing with the drummers.
The drums were a nice touch. I have my bracelet on now.
This one was definitely one of the best so far!!
Thanks for the kind words 🙏
Nasser - you probably don't remember this, but we traded jerseys in 2010. I'm a big fan!
@mikelun and I still have the jersey!! Great job guys!!!
This whole episode of the pod was fantastic. Thanks for clipping this part for us. Are you going to do more from this episode?
Ask and you shall receive! Thanks for the great feedback
Brodie and Kins... that would probably explode the ultimate world.
Should we reach out to Brodie?
@@podpractice_pod I think it depends on the topic of conversation so here's my thought: Kins and Brodie are both somewhat polarizing players (though I think Brodie was moreso), but it could be good to discuss how polarizing players are perceived, what they can or should do about it, and how their coaches and teammates and opponents can help or hurt those perceptions. Especially interesting for an off season conversation.
I cant see Mike the same way anymore since I started to thinking he looks like Pharrell Williams :)

Need to see Kins shit talk on COD

This might be an alltimer
Appreciate you 🙏
I haven't watched the whole podcast, yet. Just this clip. Is Kins like super baked or something? His eyes are half closed a bunch. Or is there another reason why he is so disengaged from this conversation?
Good question. It might have been the freshness of our poor performance at the tournament weighing on him. Maybe we’ll chat about it when we all have a chance to sit down together.
@@podpractice_pod Oh snap. Got a channel response. No shade at Kins. I just was legit wondering why he wasn't chiming in, then noticed he seemed "tired".
@@NoodleXXII Haha. It's a great observation. We appreciate it!
Obviously, call this segment the Finer things in life (but they're the wierder things)
The weirder the better!
Kins looks like a TMNT in that hoodie and the blue band above his head from the headset
Agreed
Dude freechild's a legend! Insane seeing him win again.
One of the goats
Re: Mike's "first time seeing Freechild" during the NextGen vs Mad Club game - I think this is Freechild's deep cut but feel free to rewatch the whole game because this is all I could find when I watched it: ruclips.net/video/eFRrAsk1nVc/видео.htmlsi=XvRfcU7tQzWzcOYm&t=1976
That must have been it. Mike's an old man. It's a little fuzzy up there.
@@podpractice_pod haha I mean still this is an example of how Freechild can FLY. The guy is one big fast twitch muscle.
This was an amazing episode, I love when Kins repressed feelings came up 😂, and I love the detailed talk about each game Rhino played , the level of scouting is far better and more detailed than anything I have ever seen , so interesting
He wears his heart on his sleeve. Rhino's preparation paid off.
Is there any film of the Rhino Slam vs Furious George game?
What's is the pants Quinn is wearing? They're nice!!
literally thinking the same thing
Nah, Tobias is cool asf and that's my first impression of him 🎉

Too late to write him in?
Pawel sounds like an absolute menace of a PhD advisor "Just label your f-ing axes. I was actually surprised how good a figure this was until you did that. So stupid."
That is a very accurate impersonation
Really enjoyed this episode and the visual breakdowns provided. I've been trying to develop a better sense of what my scanning/throwing progressions should be based on different scenarios, so the visuals and discussion here were really helpful. Only slight disagreement/critique I've heard here is that it may be better to line up even on the Non-trap side rather than behind at a 45 degree. Their cut here being maybe a bit more vertical since the mark probably is flatter. For the trap-side...I totally agree, it makes 0 sense to start even unless you see the mark isn't positioning at a 90 degree. Something that I'd be interested to hear more about is how to make sure the thrower/off-handler are on the same page. It seems like there are often times in these smaller spaces with multiple cuts that a turnover is made from a throw to space just as the off-handler is changing direction. How can these miscues be avoided? Is it simply a chemistry thing? Is there some sort of a signal or communication that should be led by either the cutter or handler?
Old 90's player here, just stumbled on this. Gonna be at Natties and thanks to you I'll be spending some time at the Bravo games!
Poor Mikey has to sustain 3 children fighting over wording. Pawel is just so much fun to listen to. Great pod, thanks!
Who tf is Jordan Kerr
exactly
Much love Leo! Miss yah out here in Atlanta :( Slugs had a similar elo scoring tracking system in our practices my last couple years there. Shout out Johnny Ortberg, Bay Area coaching legend. It makes the practices so much more intense. Especially when the teams that get made by the elo don't align with peoples perceptions of skill. Super fun!
Love Leo as a player. Even more as a person.
Tobias is a national treasure
That competitive cauldron is such a sick idea 😊

@@mikelun I knew Coach Mikey would have my back 💪
I'm not understanding the oio throw. Can you explain/demonstrate and talk about how to throw it? Love the show❤ thanks
Outside in, Inside Out. Think of throwing an outside in shape for an inside break. Traditionally this wasn’t the meta because the shape of an outside in will trail away from the receiver and requires more precision. Today, many throwers use this shape because it’s fast and it’s harder for the mark to take it away.
@@podpractice_pod That makes sense, thanks.
