Iowa Traction 50, a 104 year old Baldwin Steeple Cab, drags a cut of hoppers to the CPKC interchange at Mason City, IA. The 50, along with the other four BLW steeple cabs still on the roster, are the oldest locomotives still in revenue service in the country. All five are over 100 years old, being built between 1917 and 1923.

      Best I can tell every weekday. This job is based out of Eagle Grove and usually gets to Ft. Dodge in the early evening. The Ft. Dodge roadswitcher crosses the bridge too but I'm not sure if that's a regular occurance or only as needed.

    Why were coal trains being stored on museum property?

    • @ericemmons3040
      @ericemmons3040 3 месяца назад

      The museum earns money by storing cars that the major railroad nearby (UP? BNSF? I would have to look it up) doesn't need at the time and/or doesn't have room for.

    Any locomotive can pull this many cars empty with no grade. If this train was loaded then i would be impressed.

    • @ericemmons3040
      @ericemmons3040 3 месяца назад

      It doesn't matter whether the cars are empty or loaded; what matters is the total weight of the train and whether the locomotive has the starting tractive effort to move the train.

    This wasn’t much for 1630 to handle. It’s meant for freight drags, however. Todays cars do weigh more than freight cars back when this locomotive was in revenue service so still a good workout. It’s hard for a lot of railroads to justify working a locomotive hard like they were when they were new with spare parts lying around but it’s still great to see an old iron horse stretch their legs

    My God, men, they didn't build these engines to be toys; they were meant to work. Yes, it's cool, but it's hardly astonishing. She's only doing exactly what she was built to do -- pull heavy freight at low speed. Nearly all her weight is on her drivers. I don't know the average tonnage of freight trains circa 1917, but with her tractive effort this is not a miracle. It's just a great illustration of the power of steam. Take a Doble steam car. Direct drive, it'll go 0-60 in about 15 seconds and it's nothing but torque. You don't even have a transmission. A Ford Model T can't top 40 mph and it takes about 40 seconds to do that! Alas, I rant in vain. Tomorrow I shall haul firewood in my Nissan Frontier with heated seats and digital music.
