J-PLUGGIN FOR STAGERS, Reaction Strikes from Lockjaw Kings

Hunting for staging kings on the south shore of Lake Ontario in mid September 2024. Primarily looking for egg-laden females for skein and sacs before the fish hit the creeks. When the fish just aren't in the mood to bite, plugs on the riggers can get you some reaction strikes as you'll see in the vid. It's been a really slow start to the salmon run on the south shore. BIG TUBE JIGS FOR MONSTER LAKERS, Stannard Rock

July 2024 trip to Stannard Rock on Lake Superior to jig for big lakers. We sailed out of Lac La Belle, MI and ran about 35 miles to get to the rock. We had two days of good weather and managed to land a bunch of lakers on a variety of baits, but the 5 1/2 musky tubes on a 2 oz. head in 60-70 feet of water seemed to be the ticket for both numbers and size.

While the fishing has been easy, one Moonshine spoon in particular has been hot for me, catching big king after big king. South Shore Lake Ontario spring king fishing at it's best. Late April, stiff west wind, 53 degree water temps, 50 - 60 fow. It was too rough to troll upwind so we went for the one way downwind glory troll. Stinger Stingray spoons in "Pickle Seed" and "Green Gator" were good on Chinook Divers and shallow riggers.

@@nathancallan9376 Awesome glad you found the video useful and hopefully it's saving you some money as well. Tight lines 👊
waiting to get one on sale. they want 185 dollars for it now! Anything to get out of that dang wind though right! I can stand the cold but the constant wind is what gets me.
Yeah I hear ya, some days that wind eats you up. You can keep it pretty warm in there with the buddy heater even on the windy days. I'm just hoping for more than one or two weeks of ice this year. Last two years we haven't had much ice here in Western NY.
@@MudSharkZ yep same here (Eastern, Washington state) . We had about 3 weeks decent ice, then it was still thick enough but the slush was so thick it was like standing in a puddle lol
Thanks for the tip im going to have to give them a try thanks for sharing my friend 😊

Great tips and tricks. Will try to find some of those bandits.
I think you will like them, they cast great and get a lot of bites when the suns up. Thanks for watching 👊
Is there near rochester?
Yes, in that general area.
Excellent action, thanks for the tips!!!!!!
Ever come across a puzzle face king fish? Pretty knarly
Nope, can't say I have. Where you catch them?
Max! Get those seagulls. Good fishing.
Oh, he wanted to 😂
It’s always harder to get those stagers to bite. They usually get cranky and don’t want to be bothered. At least you got into a couple, well done guys.
I think we were lucky to catch the two we did, pretty tough bite lately. Thanks for watchin.
where you guys fishing close to watkins glen or ?
@@davesmith7440 No not in this video, but I'm sure you could get some around there when the water cools off. Around 60 degrees water temp seems to be when they get very active in the fall.
Sandy creek?
@@YxngLeeJ No, west of there a ways.
Looked like you guys figured it out quickly. Nice looking lakers, great eaters.
It was definitely different to see all those aggressive lakers high in the water column. Looking forward to watching your pier fishing video before bed tonight, good stuff. 👊
Nice your video bro

We ain’t ranger status but do well in the $9000 16.5ft sylvan with a new 90 merc on it. White trash style
@@derekmcdevitt9491 Hell yeah, the guys that one it last year were in a ski boat with a trolling motor so it don't take a fancy boat.

Any of you folk doing fall brawl. Pretty sure buddy and I are. Not going to Cleveland though going to do our fishing out of mazuricks
@@derekmcdevitt9491 The Newmister boys are in it every year fishing on the Ranger. I haven't gotten in it myself yet, always too busy chasing trout and salmon around.
Nice job! I love catching kingfish. They're very small but they're fun. If I have two rods I will cut one up, use a bigger hook and get it way out there. I've caught shark that way.
Good tip 👊 I also love trying for the sharks. This year the surf was very cold when I was there so there weren't many Brown sharks around. I did try one night anyway and got skunked.
Way to go on catching some nice fish 🐟 👌 👍 are the salmon staging yet close to the piers yet in new york????
2 days of northeast wind here now which is exactly what we needed to cool the water down. Gonna hit the pier tomorrow night for the first time I think. I heard there are a few fish in the river already so it should be time.
Nice fishing boys!!
Thanks Jimbo 🧡 Many Busch lights were sacrificed.
Winter flounder looked small
@@letsgomets002 They only had to be 12" to keep from what I remember. They don't get as big as the fluke.
So we recently went out with these guys and chartered the whole boat with a group of our Asian Friends. There wasn't ANY fish put back that was of legal length. We limited on Walleye, Perch, And caught and kept multiple Drum and White Perch. There wasn't any empty cooler space when he got back to the dock. And Yes, I tried the "Sheep Head" And it was actually a lot better than i thought it was going to be. Now im not going to go out and target them. But we will save them in our future trips for our friends. Just gut them and frezze them, They'll do the rest
@@Pyle81 I've never tried the white perch or drum but I would definitely try them if someone cooked or smoked them up for me. Sounds like you guys had a great trip. I just released another video on that boat from about a month ago if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/7jRkYlSJSew/видео.html
The Irish Sinker!!! I know you remember our trip back in the day! Lol
Hell yeah, you need to meet me over in PC some time so we can go out.
can you do this without the water and ice and just the baking soda and salt? thanks
You can, but I've tried it both ways and I think the water method gives you better baits.
@@MudSharkZ alright, appreciate the response
Cheers man very clever thanks for your tips
Thanks for watching and commenting 👊
That ...flounder ...short
That was a winter flounder not a fluke, so it was well over the size limit.
10 oz.....for porgies ???? ...no way
Thanks for the wisdom buddy! I'm new to surfcasting and you taught me something.
@@seancarroll8326 Thanks for watching 👊 I'm actually at the jersey shore this week doing some surf fishing. So far there has been a lot of action, kingfish and spots.
Thanks! I’m all about free bait! When in Alaska I will reach down and snag a small clump of tube worms off the side of the dock, cut them out of the tube, cut them into 3/4” pieces and put those on a #8 hook to catch the small surf perch under the dock, then I use those surf perch to jig over the bottoms out past 150 feet deep areas for halibut and rockfish. I learned how to do that from a local who had been living off the grid since the 70s (he has since had to cut back to only summer and fall in Alaska off grid due to age and ailments)….
That's a great tip! I've never been, but going to Alaska to fish for halibut is on my bucket list. Glad you enjoyed the video. Sand fleas are great bait as well 👊
Awesome! Great morning out 🤙😎
It was a blast, always good to fish with my boy. Thank you for watching and commenting 👊
The moonshine strikes again. i throw that on shore for Salomon due alright when it's on good luck 8:15 my friend and keep those lines tight 😊
Tight lines, thanks for watching 👊
from what boat launch should i launch if i want to do a spring brown trout like you in late march?
Anywhere from Wilson, NY to Sodus Bay can be good as long as the conditions are right. Other areas further east are good too I'm sure, I just haven't fished them personally. Generally you want to look for areas where creeks are hitting the lake dumping out that nice warmer green water. I usually fish the Pt. Breeze area, but there are a lot of options.
The moonshine spoon for the win. Great day out there on the big lake, the fish will only get bigger. Good workout for Johnny.
It's been a fun year for trolling the big lake, but I'm already starting to look forward to some stream fishing. I actually bought a centerpin reel last fall but never used it because my elbow injury. Feeling better now so I'll try it this year and I'll definitely need some pointers 😂
Ha. That spoon has sucked for me out of Milwaukee. Given it lots of chances and never got a big King on it. Glad it works for you.
@@jamesherald3243 Our water's a lot murkier over here on Ontario, it has a little of that Lake Erie green in it.
What port..
I mostly fish between the Genny and Point Breeze.
wow that was amaazing fishing video those two salmon put up a good fight on that one fishing pole and your friend must be getting tired of getting in figts with fish I'm surprised you didn't catch any fighter i wonder why didn't you keep the two big one. So keep up the work and enjoy the heat while it's still around
Yeah he was pretty wore out after those two big ones. I usually try to release all of my kings until I need eggs in the late summer early fall. Then I will keep a few to get eggs and some meat. Thanks for watching 👊
I am guessing that spoon is called sniper
You're probably right. I never look at the names, if I like the colors I run them. "Sniper" is a great name!
I don’t understand, I see people asking for the location on comments and they don’t share that info. Lots of fisherman’s are selfish. Guys there’s enough fish for everyone. People being fishing for thousands of years and still plenty of fish in the waters 😂
I'm not that selfish, if I knew you personally, I would be happy to take you fishing at this spot. On social media though it's generally considered bad form to ask for specific spots and to share them.
@@MudSharkZWhat do bad about it?
Nice video man and sorda wanna try this in my kayak what you think??
And what pound test do you use
Yes, you could definitely do it in a kayak and I use 8 lb. test Trilene XL or Big Game.
Yes you could do definitely do it in a kayak. I use 8 lb. test Trilene XL.
What area of Lake Ontario were you fishing in ? Nice Perch !!!
I'm fishing near Rochester, but all of the bays have good perch fishing when the water cools off.
@@MudSharkZ I’m from Rochester, moved down to South Carolina 16 years ago. I miss the fishing up there. My Dad and I use to go fishing at Point Breeze off of the Parkway. Good fishing on those cold days, right before it starts snowing.
Great videos, thanks so much for sharing what have been the HOT spoons for you. Just curious, what port are you fishing out from, and do you use any particular scents on the spoons? Again, THANK YOU!!! Tight lines🎣
@@johnlantz3771 I fish all over but I mostly fish in the Point Breeze, NY area. Putting scent on the spoons isn't really a thing over here but people do use herring strips behind flashers for kings. Color is definitely important on the spoons. Thanks for watching and happy fishing 👊
Sweet man, this looks like great fun, my father in law goes up to lake Ontario to fish with downriggers, getting his boat fixed now so hopefully in the fall I'll be able to go up with him. Come down to the sound and do some striper fishing why don't ya?
It's been an awesome year so far, hopefully you get a chance to come up and get in on it. Where you striper fishing at, Long Island Sound? I heard the striper action has been pretty solid so far this year too.
@@MudSharkZ yeah, generally go to central/eastern long Island sound, sometimes out to rhode island as well! And hopefully we will get up there in the fall. Hope you guys continue to have a good season!!
Let’s goooo
Hi where can I buy spoons like you have. MartyStark from Portland Oregon
@@martystark6334 Probably FishUSA online. I'm mostly fishing Stinger Stingrays, Moonshines, and Dreamweavers. I think FishUSA carries all of them.
@@MudSharkZ Thanks MartyStark for checking in.
Great info, thanks!
You bet! Thx for watching 👊
Nice catch. what reel are you using?
My go-to pier reel for kings is a 4000 series Shimano Sedona with 20 lb. Suffix 832 braid. You need the larger capacity or the kings will spool you.
@@MudSharkZ That's awesome. I also happen to run a 4000 Sedona as my spinning setup, but it's the rear drag version (4000RB). It has the same capacity as the front drag version but with noticeably less max drag-7 pounds is the max drag. Do you think 7 pounds will suffice for these Lake Ontario shore salmons? I'm worried about whether I should buy a new reel because of this.
@@alldaypan I think 7 lbs. will be OK. I guess if you get spooled you'll know you need to upgrade but I know I never have my drag set near to max. You want them to run and tire themselves out, if you horse them too much you'll just break your gear.
@@MudSharkZ Thanks for the helpful advice.
In South Africa you need a paid permit to use Sand Fleas. Nothing for Free in S.A unfortunately
Ahhh, that stinks. Still a few things free in the USA, for now anyway. They are great bait though, thanks for watching 👊
What I do for steering on a similar setup is use my trolling motor with the Heading Lock feature to do the steering for me while my outboard does the pushing and you can also use the trolling motor speed to slightly adjust your trolling speed too. I don't need to touch the steering wheel all day and troll straight lines without needing to watch the maps.
Cool idea. My bowmount doesn't currently have the spotlock, but you can convert it over for like $400 with a new head. I will probably do that eventually. Thank you for watching and commenting 👊
