This is a tremendous tutorial and has saved me from a massive headache! Thank you! The only thing I would add is the user might need to play with (1) blending modes and (2) opacity for the "high pass" layer. I was working on making a repeating spruce tree bark texture, and going with a Vivid Light blend mode at 75% opacity was the sweet spot for my particular project.

I want to point out that this may not work with an imported mesh. For example if you're dealing with a third party who is exporting FBX from Blender. The Unify tool only works if the vertex indices are not screwed up in some way. The way you avoid that is to build the model entirely inside Max. But with an imported mesh there's no guarantee that the file contains the data in the way Max expects. So tools like the Normal modifier or Unify in the Editable Mesh modifier may not work. In fact it might make things worse. Always leverage the hierarchy to work as non-destructively as possible.

Great explanation! Is there a way to run a script when 3ds Max executes? I have a CameraResolutionMod Script, I created a toolbar as you explained, it worked. But I have to do everytime I open Max. No big deal, but I was wondering if it could just auto-run this
