I'm trying to figure out the problem with idle on this machine. Brian from Australia has volunteered to help. This video is for Brian to hear what it's doing. It's pretty boring.

The thig I most remeber was when he broke his leg just before the Islebof Man TT So he welded a stantion out of the head stock, as it was his brake leg .to rest his leg on. He road 200+ miles there, then 200+ back with his girlfriend on pillion 😂 top til.mate, never kick a bike on the side stand, you'll all end up on the floor.

    I bought mine aged 18 in 1977. Being 18 helps a lot, but please don't kick it over on the side stand, sit astride or use the centre stand. If it ever fires up, but immediately cuts out, it's possibly the kill switch (yes, it can fire but just for a second). You might like to now that in 1977 a Queen's jubilee Bonneville cost £749, whereas a Commndo cost £1,600. A good bike forr the taller chap, I'm 6'2".

    Good grief the starting procedure for this or any similar British Big Twin is: open fuel tap. Depress ticklers on both carbs till petrol runs out; open throttle no more than 1/8; get to tdc; kick. If she don't start after 3 or 4, check for spark. Oh and they had a completely ridiculous kill button which needed to be in circuit but frequently wasn't. Usually if you just flicked that button (it's red) that would get contact back and bingo. (These switch clusters were not very waterproof.) A lot of us just ended up wiring that button out because it was such a total PITA.

And I wouldn't even THINK of trusting the Norton's side stand for anything, I'd say designed by Beelzebub's 3-year-old.

    If it's not a worn out carb then it's an air leak on the inlet port - either the carb connections or judging by the oil coming out of the LH side, pipe out of spec valve guides. Standard guides are useless - they bell inwards on fitment and the i.d is too big from the start. Looking and listening to the videos you still have problems - lots of oil smoke from LH cylinder on start-up - you need to strip down the top end and do it properly - send the entire top end off to a proven Norton shop.

      @@nicksnorton2340 But you're using the Mk1's which work very well as long as there is no wear between the slide and body which, on the original design wear extremely quickly due to slide and body material being the same. Fit the Amal Premiers and you'll have no problem as long as you get the air:fuel ratio checked for your bike. P.S there is no extended tube on MK2 Amals

  • @SimonRatcliff-ss8mn
    @SimonRatcliff-ss8mn Год назад

    I didn't see you use the choke. If the engine was cold on start up they need the choke for them to run at idle from cold - if they don't need the choke then the mixture is too rich on the idle circuit. If you have the Premiers fitted you can change the pilot jets. If you don't have Premiers then fit a pair - the original Amals where cheap at best. Best thing to do is get it on a dyno where you'll get a graph print out of the air:fuel ratio through the rev range. The engine is burning oil too - needs the top end doing properly.

    @mitchburk5112 Год назад

    Sounds like you are having a fuel starvation issue. If you have the Premiers with the stayup floats you need to set the fuel level not the float level like you do with the old plastic floats.. You use an old drain plug with a nipple and some clear 1/4 fuel line to make a utube. Most Brit bike Amal suppliers have a kit availble or they are on ebay. With the utube zip tied to the side of the carb turn the fuel on and measure how high it comes in the tube. What you are shooting for is about .21" below the top of the float bowl(not the top the gasket). If it is low, take the bowl off and gently bend the metal tangs on float up so that it sits higher in the bowl. With the stay up floats this generally means the top of float is parallel with the top of bowl and slightly proud of the top when it is close. Usually if you get it too high the needle won't close and the carb will drip gas. This may take a few back and forths to get it right but it will make the bike idle a lot better.

    Nice bike. Sounds good. As a fellow Norton owner, I'm curious about why the rear fender and taillight occasionally bob up and down at idle. It looks like the rear frame member supporting them isn't welded to the main frame tube. Is there something you've modified to cause this?

    • @nicksnorton2340

      No sir, it is indeed welded, i did not weld a longer gusset of what is available. I've seen mine as well as others do the same thing. The camera "strobes" the vibration to make it appear like it's slow moving up and down.

    Sounds like the relay on the coils mod, trying to fix a non existent problem or one due to poor maintenance. Even on new Premiers I lap the bowl surface flat on a mini surface plate similar to Tornados reply. The gasket is sufficient in most cases to seal without lapping on new carbs. A lot less trouble than doing this and no problems with the idling over tens of thousands of miles. How did you check this was a problem?

    • @nicksnorton2340
      @nicksnorton2340 2 года назад

      I read about the gaskets leaking because the bowls weren't flat and sealing the port. I now don't think the gasket is the problem. I know the exhaust valve guide on the drive side is passing an excessive amount of oil, i believe since the rebuild. Another viewer commented about a condition caused by too much oil will disrupt the air/fuel mixture at idle. Everything i've tried has not worked leading me to take the head off and replace the valve and guide. This will be a winter project.

    Bit of smoke puffing when blipping throttle. When my 850 did that, found the original intake valve seals had gone brittle and crumbly...but yours should be new. Did you use updated Viton seals or stock? Also, the tiny oil drain hole on floor of intake rocker box, right side, partially under the spring seat (on the 850 anyway) can get clogged, leading to excess oil building up in the rocker, getting sucked past the intake or exhaust valve stems. I was able to clear mine using an extra long aerosol spray can straw (off a Seafoam can) and run it down nearly all the way to the timing chest where it takes a 90 deg bend. Must of had some debris in there as oil now drains much faster. In you case, idling on side stand could mean the oil is accumulating away from that drain hole and overfilling the rocker until you are upright. A Centerstand is a beautiful thing to have ;-)
