I think this show addresses an underrepresented cultural insecurity in the Italian community. This show is almost 30 years old. Listening to my mom and dad speaking about the divisions between Italian, Irish, Eastern European - Jewish communities, seems a little weird today, but their immigration and by extension, neighborhoods were close knit and proud. For a group who was hated as much as Italians for "garlic smell" or racist phenotypes I won't go into, the culture became synonymous with places like New York and bostons, leading to accents culture, music.. this is not a justification, but each new immigrant group to the US will face the new kid a school thing. From that, intoduce new things to society that catch on, making the US more nuanced, and approachable over time.
