Wow, sad ideed. I can't believe after all the efforts that has been made to preserve this ship, it will eventually go beneath the waves. As a long time Titanic and also Queen Mary fan myself (basically British ocean liners fan), initially SS United States was not my favourite ship. Years back when my passion for Ocean Liners from the Great Era was still developing actually I didn't like SS U.S. at all. I thought the design was too radical and that the Americans cheated their way to the Blue Riband with brute force. I thought back then that they stole the prize from Queen Mary... Some years later SS United States slowly began to grow on me. I found the elegence of it's lines. It was different from the traditional British design sure, but it was still a pretty ship, a graceful ship with a shade of agression with the heavily raked bow and the giant funnels. Now I fully appreciate this ship for what it is and it will remain forever in my pantheon of the greatest ocean liners of all time. If only some billionaire could have spend some money on preserving this piece of history above the waves...

okay the owners of the ship stated that while yes, they did consider the reefing option have stated that the ship isn't going to become a reef. check their website if ya don't believe me. and also the ship is allowed to stay where it is until they can find a new home for it.

The SS United will now be sunk and turned into an artificial reef . She will have life aboard her one again when the marine life makes a new home .

She was painted grey in 1968 and the blue line was removed.😊 The new single Italis did not do her justice, it looked wrong. Her last two lives were the Alfados then American Star in which she laid to rest her broken body under the seas 10:55 rather than be pulled to pieces in the wreckers yards. I would think Olympic's interiors would've been restored to her pre-WWI style (non-green) because she starred in James Cameron's film as her sister (studio paid for her complete restoration to look just like Titanic, including some 'modifications' such as the A Deck promenade and brief removal of the post-Titanic lifeboats). I also think once the Titanic Quarter was started she would've been transferred to Belfast as one of the museum centerpieces alongside Nomadic.

My Polish Great Grandmother was on the maiden voyage of the SS Vaterland and it arrived in NYC on May of 1914. She described it as a beautiful journey that she never forgot. Unfortunately she never saw her family or friends again due to the fact that they were all killed before and during WWII.

Case 2: She would be used as a Hospital Ship like her younger sister RMS Britannic. Case 3: She would get modernized and would sail alongside RMS Queen Mary as Cunard and White Star Line merged into Cunard-White Star Case 4: She would outlast any 1900s era ocean liner as most of them would have been either scrapped or sunk Case 5: Since Olympic is still in active duty, the plan for a massive ship on WSL's part would not come to fruition (RMMV Oceanic) Case 6: Olympic would, in turn, become the oldest ocean liner in history and oldest White Star Ship alongside SS Nomadic as the oldest tender ship.
