Deansgate Castlefield to Cornbrook by Metrolink
Went for a walk round the other day when I was back in Manchester for the first time in many years. Former student, I graduated in 2001, 1st MEng in Software Engineering, probably one of the last years of UMIST degrees, the merger was in process when I was leaving. Very odd finding it completely desserted. Real shame. Took most of my lectures in the lovely Renolds building, spent plenty of time in the main building and the MSS tower too...hopefully some of it is retained/incorporated into the new
Walked around there many time in my student days
o wow. I spent so much time wandering around this campus (1970-77) Mech Eng then Management Sciences to see it still intact and yet apparently abandoned after all these years feels very strange and quite sad. The buildings still look great and I remember being quite proud strutting around with my new Umist scarf in 1970. Let's hope that the University and the city can find a way of putting them all into good use again. I recall havingt o use the stairs to get up to the top of the ManSci building during the miner's strike and we had no power for the lifts, I could not do that now.
In eighties used to have o e of the bigest computers in the world. In this computer was calculated the proper inclination of the frint part of the famous super sonic airplane concord.
Interesting and rather sad. The social science building where I studied Management Sciences seems to be deteriorating even faster than I am 😅.
Its still there? Thats amazing. I studied from UMIST long time ago. So, if its merged in UOM then what purpose its serving now? Looks completely empty to me from your video.
I think it is completely empty. It's pretty much an open air modernist museum piece at the moment. An eerily quiet area in what is otherwise a very busy city. There are plans to redevelop the area, with Bruntwood on board as lead developer.
@@thecityisalive thanks for your reply and a very special thanks for making & sharing the video
This was really interesting, thanks for posting it.
Thanks for watching a commenting. Glad you found it interesting.
Awesome to see it like this
bewildering how rhetoric of "modern architecture is objectively bad" exists in a world where something as beautiful as this exists at the same time, same people probably think infrastructure is ugly too
Sold out to Manchester University and no-one cared to fight it. Now old graduates from there went to a University that doesn't exist anymore - well done all involved, I had a feeling that no-one gave a damn when I studied there and I was absolutely right, someone even warned me beforehand, don't go to UMIST all they care about is 'bums on seats' (presumably for the tutor fees).
Love the old buildings but the ugly concrete/metal construction behind the town hall is disgusting! Was it designed or just raised?
the ugly concrete/ metal construction behind the town hall is a modern beautiful modern building, try visiting Birmingham and look at it
Looks great. Will be better when the gardens are finished and established
The green bit of this is very disappointing unless it isn’t finished. Manchester is so poor at parks.
Not worth 850/ 900 pounds a month no way Not at all. That's ridiculous
This project was supposed to be completed by 2018 !! It’s now 2021 and still not finished ! If the existing unfinished or not even started blocks get demolished then Urban Splash obviously don’t see a financial return coming their way !! These flats / maisonettes are expensive to buy and very little is for rent ! Sheffield council should have prettied it up put in new kitchen and bathrooms and upped the rent ! Because that’s all Urban Splash have done !! I’m not impressed with this regeneration project ! The coloured glass looks tacky and inside the exposed arty concrete is horrendous !! This is what happens when private developers are trying to make a quick buck 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
Love Brum. Wonder when will the council turn on the fountain. THX
It is now turned on
I love the development going on in the city centre - but one of my biggest gripes is the amount of graffiti, especially on the south side of the city centre. These idiots are tagging everything, new, old, used and unused. I was showing someone around a few days ago, he's American but currently lives in London, and the graffiti was one of the first things he picked up on...to be honest as a proud Manc I was quite embarrassed. Just another example of our councils not caring about the fabric of our great city - because this stuff is now everywhere, it just encourages more. They need to use the powers available and start fining people - it makes the city centre look rundown. Also I'm not referring to street art here (i.e Nothern Quarter stuff) that is a credit to the city.
Where are the trees?. Trees make cities beautiful. THX
There will be some at some point. The whole area is post-industrial land at present so trees will be included as new developments come forward and there will be a large new park
I've seen at least 6
