    How could a smilodon precision strike when its prey is thrashing about??. All animals thrash and fight for their lives when when they feel death is at hand. Smilodon was a meat stealer. The wolves were the great hunters and smilodon would scare the wolves away with the big teeth.

    • @awesomepixie419
      @awesomepixie419 Год назад

      Dire wolves aren’t grey wolves or even closely related. *Aenocyon Dirus* Smilodon likely hunted in packs and they were built like bears with the longest claws of all big cats. They team tackle, stab, then rip out a huge chunk of flesh.

    Ben, can you please continue the lesson / make a video with respect to bewits? I'm seeing so many falconers posting the use of aquarium tubing and zip ties, which seems like a really bad idea. I would like to understand the pros and cons of traditional leather bewits. In the picture it looks like a mini-jess, so how does it stay on? Do you push the button through the slit? Please also discuss positioning of bells (where on ankle; ankle vs. tail). You could also discuss when to use of jess grease. TY.

    This video's about as accurate as jurassic park. 1. "It was the T-rex of North America" -tell that to Arctodus 2. Smilodon was larger than an African lion 3. Smilodon did not hunt camels only. In fact after isotopic analysis of their teeth, it's now known that smilodon as well as the american lion hunted animals like tapirs and lived in more forested areas. Check this out. www.nationalgeographic.com/science/2019/08/saber-tooth-cats-surprise-fossils-redraw-picture-of-big-cat/

    • @awesomepixie419
      @awesomepixie419 2 года назад

      Yeah Arctodus is more so like the modern day brown or black bear a hyper-omnivore. Evolution’s path for their greater size gave it the ability to be a kleptoparasite. Smilodon evolved with camels, llamas and horses way before the first bison crossed over the Bering Strait. Technically they were probably killing camels like this video shows for a few millions years. Being that Smilodon were social and (possibly the American lion) big cats and brown bears have shown a higher dominance in the food chain being additive predators. A pride attacking a solitary bear would be a sight to see.

    A modern African Lion is 400-550 pounds for a male Smilodon fatalis weighed similar to that if not 25% bigger than the Atlas lion Smilodon populator weighed 660-880, which means it's weight was similar to that of a Siberian tiger all the way to the weight of a tiliger.

    These saber teeth can kill with a closed mouth without any problem. A closed mouth even stabilizes the teeth. You can simulate the stability with a knife for example. Apart from that a tooth is much harder than bone, especially living bone. living bone is more like green bamboo (this is why it was used in cuttingtests in old Japan). After drying the bones become harder, but more brittle. A tooth is hard enough to pierce through bones. The bite force of smilodon is very low. So it is very unlikely, that it killed with a bite, because it did not have the power. Instead its Neck is extremely muscular and ideal for a stabbing or slicing movement. Because of that, if you compare predators with fighters, smilodon is the guy who enters the fight with a knife. Maybe Homotherium would have the same chances, but other predators, even the American Lion, have no instant-kill-weapons against animals as big oder bigger than themselves, if they are not very lucky. The short-faced-bear for example has really a small skull and small teeth. they cam kill, but in most cases it will take some time. American Lions had bigger teeth and the chance for a quick kill would have been higher, but still not that high. A Smilodons chance of landing a fatal blow is very high. One strike to any point of the neck is enough. And that makes killing so much easier for him. Watch the funny little "fight" between the Mountain from GoT and Connor Mc Gregor and than imagine Mc Gregor would have had a knife...

    • @Jonas-jx3kw

      no dude go do some research their teeth and bite are weaker compared to modern big cats!

    • @Corellon666
      @Corellon666 4 года назад

      @@Jonas-jx3kw did you even read what I have written? With two knives in your mouth, you don´t need to have a strong bite. If you let a navy seal fight against a UFC fighter, he will have a very hard time. But give him a knife, and the seal will win every fight. Having a weapon, that is so big is a game changer

    To bad the Saber tooth didn't know they only hunted camels. The folks in CA think they mainly hunted Bison. I know of a false saber tooth that had been stabbed in the skull by one canine of a saber tooth. Another Saber tooth that had been stabbed several times in a scapula, and a south American Glyptodon that had been killed by a single tooth being driven into its armored skull. I'm sure these mistakes in behavior could have been avoided if the cats had only watched this video before going about their affairs but they obviously didn't.

    Sorry but your knowledge is lacking. Smilodon could open its mouth at least 120 degrees and there is plenty of evidence that it preyed on a variety of animals including mammoth. Where did you get the idea that it only ate camels?

    • @dwightehowell8179
      @dwightehowell8179 6 лет назад

      It slowly dawned on me that the Saber Tooth doesn't need to open its mouth to use its sabers. Most saber toothed animals have flanges on their lower jaws to protect their teeth but not these. They can clearly stab another animal with their mouth closed. If you read my post you will note a list of attacks in which it most likely would have had to attack with a closed mouth to do what it did. Not what we normally expect but in the adult animals the sabers stick out a long way below the jaw with the mouth closed.

    • @davidletasi3322
      @davidletasi3322 4 года назад

      Right, my specimens of both Smilodon gracilis and the early Nimravid saber tooth Hoplophoneus can easily open 115 to 120 degrees with out any disruption of the jaw hinge contact with the skull. The late Dr. Larry Martin tested the bite radius of S. fatalis on the neck of a corpse of a bison, it easily severed the corotid artery in the neck. Camels and horses were also prey. In Texas the late Pleistocene saber tooth cat Homotherium serum, found in a cave, was associated with the remains of baby mammoths and tapir. In Florida two saber cat skeletons of Xenosmilus hodsonae were found in a sink hole deposit in 1983 and were associated with the early Pleistocene peccary Platygonus.
