I trained on these in Marine Safety school back in the day and they are designed to do what this video shows as the occupants are well strapped into their seats. Now would I want to have to toss around in rough seas in these for days or hours waiting for rescue? No way but it sure beats the alternative doesn’t it.

Freefall life rafts are designed to function this way. (Ok, maybe the front flip wasn’t by design, but the life raft falling into the water? That’s how it works.) Imagine you’re working on an oil rig more than 100’ above the water. Now imagine the oil rig is on fire. What are you gonna do, take a slow stroll down the stairs? The people inside have seats and harnesses with headrests and are facing rearwards, all to reduce the chance of injury. If only countless engineers had consulted the vast wisdom of the RUclips comment section…

No they're not dead. They go in sitting backwards against seats that include integrated head restraints that prevent side to side motion as well as the solid head rest. The water makes for a perfect uniform deceleration (they're designed to go in nose first for that reason). The sailors that learn and practice the launches think it's fun.
