2025 A Fragment of Your Imagination Challenge: Finishing Mosaic 1 (in color)
It's finally time; time to finish our mosaics, that is. Today we will focus on Tiles 1 - 4 ( Days 1 - 16).
Since we are working on 4 tiles in 1, this is an unusually long video. Feel free to fast forward if you need to. We will focus on embellishing our tiles with auras, a border, shading, ink, and color. [Note: To clarify the measurements, you need to mark off 7/8", 1 3/4", & 2 5/8" on the outer sides of the tiles in pencil.]

using microns & Pitt pens, general's layout & charcoal white pencils, stump (dual ended.... keep an emery board in stash to clean it).... ii cheat w/a circle template & add watercolor (before or after) & brush pens...shading values are one of this year's focus practices as different pencils make a difference in aesthetic result (for me) on different papers... invested in a dotting pen to prevent repetitive injury issues & that was a game changer for shading... ty.
Wow! You have many great tools to use. I like adding watercolor too. Yes, different pencils & papers produce different results. It's fun to try different combinations. I have not tried a dotting pen. Sounds interesting. Thanks for sharing❣
This is the first video I have ever watched on this topic. Why do you choose the Tortillion blending stubs over the blending sponge pens? I noticed the stubs are just wrapped paper. The sponge pens are able to be washed and reused. Do they work differently or is it an environment issue for you? Thanks for your time ~ Ruthie
Hi Ruthie, Thanks for your questions. Well, the tortillon is one of the basic tools that are featured by Zentangle, but I've used them most of my life for blending graphite. They are economical. For me, they last a long time, and I can have one for each charcoal color. I've never used the sponge pens, so I can't completely answer your question as far as blending differently. My suggestion is to use whatever works best for you whether it's a sponge pen, a tortillon, or even a cotton swab. ❤
@ I haven’t ever Tangled. I was searching for doodles to stimulate my creativity to add to make junk journaling. You made this look easy and beautiful. I watched the Molygon video after this one and fell in love with it, just had to subscribe and watch every single video you offer. I believe this technique will look amazing in my junk journaling. I have a question: What if a person is sort of " put off" by the design that is presented to be used for a certain motif? I am finding myself in that situation. I don't like the fragment that is offered for Day 15, (FYIC 2025) called "suru." Can I substitute something else?

I made a mistake. I saw the FYIC for Days 5-8, but it was for 2024. I had not filled in everything when I found the set for 2025, those same 5-8 days. So, my mosaic tile has both sets in it. Quite interesting. I must shade and blend it all now.
Oh, dear! First, there are no mistakes here. As Bob Ross might say, "Only happy accidents." Second, you got to learn extra fragments & tangles. Yay! How cool is that? ❤ I'm guessing it looks great too.
Yes, I do like to erase the extraneous pencil marks. My kneaded eraser works well for that purpose. It sort of "cleans things up."

I'd like to do this in my sketchbook, can you tell me what the size of each individual tile is? Actually, can you also tell me the measurements of both inside squares? I will then be able to figure out the rest myself, Thanks so much!
Sure, I will try. The original white tiles are 3.5" x 3.5" When you tape 4 of them together to make a larger square, that larger square is 7" x 7" on the outside. In the large square, we draw 2 squares: the first is 4.25" x 4.25" & the second is 2 7/8" x 2 7/8" (so just under 3"x3"). I hope that helps.
