Dietrich Bonhoeffer on the Peril of Stupidity
In a 1942 essay written shortly before his arrest by the Gestapo - an essay particularly relevant in our own time - Dietrich Bonhoeffer argued that stupidity, a "human" rather than "intellectual" defect, was a greater threat than outright evil. But we're not hopeless before it. It can be resisted, Bonhoeffer argued, by "greatness of heart."

The Presidential Election: How would Jesus Vote?
Просмотров 250Месяц назад
Many people today, including a good number of Christians, ignore questions about moral character when it comes to deciding how to vote in the presidential election. Instead, they're willing to support any candidate who promises to promote their pet partisan issues. But this kind of Realpolitik cynicism is hideously contrary to the teaching of Christ. Fr. Kerry suggests an alternative standard t...
God and Innocent Suffering
Просмотров 1582 месяца назад
People suffer through no fault of their own each and every day. Is God responsible when innocents suffer? For centuries, Christian "theodicies" have tried to take God off the hook by arguing that the divine hands are clean. Fr. Kerry examines three of the most popular theodicies, concludes that they're not altogether convincing, and suggests an alternative to them.
Pope Francis' Letter on Literature and Spiritual Formation
Просмотров 3003 месяца назад
On August 4, Pope Francis issued a letter in which he argues that good literature "topples the idols of a self-referential, falsely self-sufficient and statically conventional language" that pollutes both Church and culture. Reading good literature also promotes personal spiritual and moral growth in at least four ways. Fr. Kerry offers a quick analysis of the Pope's "On the Role of Literature ...
Lights in Our Darkness: The 36 Hidden Righteous Ones
Просмотров 1954 месяца назад
Jewish tradition has it that at any give time there are at least 36 men and women on earth whose righteousness holds back the forces of darkness. They're known in Yiddish as Lamed Vavniks, "the 36ers," and in Hebrew as Tzadikim Nistarim, "hidden righteous ones. The identities of the 36 are unknown to the rest of us and even to themselves, but they're humanity's real heroes. Fr. Kerry explores w...
Jesus as a Punk, Magical Rings, and Us
Просмотров 1654 месяца назад
The second-century Infancy Gospel of Thomas portrays the boy Jesus as a hell-on-wheels punk, petulant and quick to anger. This is bad enough in a mortal lad. But in a youth who possesses divine power, the consequences can be deadly for those who cross him. Fr. Kerry explores this strange noncanonical document by comparing it to a tale from the Greek philosopher Plato and suggesting that both ar...
Is the Soul Immortal? It Depends ...
Просмотров 2165 месяцев назад
When we think of the soul, most of us just assume that it, unlike the body, is intrinsically immortal. But this wasn't the opinion of many Patristic and Church Fathers. For them, the soul, like every other created thing, is contingent: it comes into being and has the potential to pass away. So immortality is a function of our relationship to God, not an intrinsic property of the soul. And this ...
Re-discovering the Sacred in Scripture
Просмотров 1005 месяцев назад
Modern biblical scholarship embraces the ""historical critical" method, which views scripture as merely an historical text to be scientifically dissected and analyzed. There's some value to this approach, but it downplays and even denies the Bible's sacred dimension. French philosopher Paul Ricoeur offers us a way of reading scripture that takes the historical critical method seriously while al...
What's So Special About Sabbath Rest?
Просмотров 1846 месяцев назад
The Sabbath is traditionally called a "day of rest." Yet many of us treat it as an opportunity to catch up on chores or shopping. Others, exhausted by labor, use it to recharge for the coming work week. Some, like me when I was a kid, find it deadly boring. But Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel helps us appreciate that Sabbath rest or "menuha," when done properly, is actually a holy opportunty to ac...
Simone Weil on Love's Double Movement
Просмотров 5686 месяцев назад
The religious thought of twentieth-century philosopher and mystic Simone Weil revolves around three fundamental themes: attention, decreation, and affliction. I explored the first in an earlier Holy Spirit Moment (link below) and will cover the third in a later one. Here, I examine Weil's claim that God's self-renunciatory creation of the universe is the prototype for love: a double movement fr...
Praying Honestly
Просмотров 1397 месяцев назад
If our prayer life feels incomplete, it may be because we don't honestly acknowledge the resentment, anger, and despair that we occasionally bring to prayer. Instead, fearing they make us unworthy in God's eyes, we try to hide them by pretending they don't exist. But this dishonest concealment of who we are blocks the intimate relationship with God we crave. The Hebrew Bible's Psalms can help u...
Does God Suffer?
Просмотров 2368 месяцев назад
We often say that God shares our pain and sorrow when we grieve, just as God shares our happiness when we rejoice. But what do we mean? Can the transcendent Creator of the universe actually experience emotions, or are we speaking metaphorically? Fr. Kerry explores two competing perspectives on whether God is capable of suffering and then offers an alternative that combines insights from both.
Re-discovering Wonder
Просмотров 1438 месяцев назад
We dwell in a culture dangerously close to being smothered, as novelist Georges Bernanos wrote, by dusty layers of indifference and lassitude. Nor is Christianity an exception to this trend. An increasing number of people, both in and out of the Church, find the Christian story uninterestingly stale. What's needed for the revitalization of both culture and religion is a recovery of the sense of...
Are You Sure It's "Faith" You've Lost?
Просмотров 1329 месяцев назад
Many viewers tell me they're distressed by what they sense as a waning of their faith. My response to them is to ask this question: Is it your faith that you're losing, or your religious beliefs? The two aren't identical. In my experience, it's usually belief - dogma, doctrine, and theological argument - and not primordial faith itself that's doubted. Distress, far from signaling a loss of fait...
Outwitting Death
Просмотров 6789 месяцев назад
Haunted as we humans are by death-fear, we understandably seek ways to evade death's clutches or at least hold it back as long as possible. Both sacred and secular literature from antiquity to the present day testify to this effort. Using Ingmar Bergman's 1957 film "The Seventh Seal" as a starting point, Fr. Kerry argues that the best way to outwit death is to love profligately and ferociously....

Both Wretched and Great: Pascal on the Human Condition
Stupidity is a choice based on a tendency toward mental laziness. Letting someone else tell you what to think is lazy. Refusing to take back control of your mind when the designated 'thinker' starts to destroy you is stupid.
I like Bonhoeffer's thoughts and insights, it's much more nuanced than Carlo Cipolla's "The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity". His observations on individualism and group/collective belonging do help explain a lot of the more various examples in people that you can see. Both ideas have merits worth discussing, but Bonhoeffer has some deeper exploration of group/cult think/indoctrination that goes beyond the simplistic notions of dumb and gullible. It's so sad that he was executed just be fore his camp was liberated, I believe he could have given us more insights and wisdom, maybe somethings that would be useful today.
Thank you Father . May you be blessed
There have alway been incrediably stupid people that put on a mask of being intellectual to hide their stupidity . They gain degrees and Doctorates and they are still stupid . True intellent people do not insult people , call others names because of what they look like . Pretend to go along with new, refreshing and liberating ideas . When they are still the stupid brainiac . There are msny around . None stupid people do not criticise others . They let them get on with it . With love and compassionate. We show love not condemnation as Christ did.
gratia tibi!
He was stupid to follow a theology that commends and commands genocide.
I don't know why this video was recommended to me, but it is a very timely topic. Stupidity seems to be overwhelming Mankind at a very perilous time. I have great respect for Bonhoeffer, as well. I remember in school how people talked about how they would have resisted the Nazis, the Holocaust...how you act today answers that quandry.. Genocide is going on right now, and the US is providing the weapons used. How are you responding to this stupid evil?
The devil is coming. Get your spiritual house in order.
Saying they are the victims of being stupid seems cold. Boenhoffer wrote in German. Could there be another translation?
Danke für Ihre Worte und Gedanken zu diesem schweren Thema. Leider scheint es immer noch/wieder so aktuell zu sein wie vor achtzig Jahren.
Pope Francis was unsure which candidate for president was the less evil, and only sure that both were against life! Jesus+ said to 'give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and give to God what is God's.' My allegiance was to Jesus+, and I did not vote, to wit, I have that right. Unfortunately, we are living in another dark age, and yes dear Father a perilous age of stupidity.
Quite timely dear Father, indeed, the western world has become stupefied, and the eastern may not be far behind. "Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of God." +
the bible says something else: there is NONE RIGHTEOUS no not one the problem only ever has been SIN. moreover under scripture ALL ARE EVIL. but this B. denies, as Jesus said to his apostles , " if you, being evil, can give good gifts to your children . . . ." the issue is the evil of all of us and not stupidiity If i thought Bonhoffer worth studying i might come to the clearer conclusion that he was never a Christian of any real kind at all
Bonhoffer is worth reading, even you might learn something.
When you come with ears plugged and eyes closed, it's hard to learn anything. But maybe you know everything already? That must make life boring.
@@joeyj6808I have spend my life listening to people, so I don't know if this comment is directed at me, but your response is irritating, condesending and just makes you look like an idiot. And no, my life is not boring.
Welcome to the decage of populism counting on stupidity (Trump)
Egyptian mystery school...
Germany and the cult of Merkel and the Green Party.
A secular take on stupidity. Start with your genetic heritage, substitute a thirst for entertainment for curiosity, suppress imagination and replace doubt with certainty. Bonhoeffer and Arendt explain the dangers of stupidity but don't explain what it is. How you get there? Study Edward Bernays Crystallizing Public Opinion, Goebbles bible, and the danger of the Public Relations Counsel.
When Dietrich Bonhoeffer is mentioned Sophie Scholl should also be mentioned because she openly defied the Nazis and paid the same price as Bonhoeffer. Whenever I hear of someone quoting Voltaire "I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." I think of Sophie. Considering how rare people like her are I know how much they mean it. Note: I am aware that likely Voltaire did not originally say this. Considering that Voltaire freeloaded off of Fredrick the Great it is likely he did not mean it either.
The problem of stupidity is that to those who engage in it it doesn't seem stupid. A mad man doesn't think he is mad. Other people seem mad. The fish doesn't know he is wet. No single drop of water sees itself as part of the flood. To an emotionally charged mob the person who calls for restraint is viewed as a seditionist. A participant of a lynch mob sees themselve as someone who is establishing justice and not as a participant in murder.
What a great way of putting it.
How true
Without spiritual experience of actual depth, people attach themselves to fervent political movements and the attending intoxication of group mania. The cure would be a deeper understanding of who Christ was and is and His relationship to the church and her people, but that understanding, if it ever existed in America, has been utterly obliterated.
Don't judge too harshly, I think you might be surprised at how many people are turning to Christ and are seeking Him, even in America. There is no country in the world where Christ is not and were an understanding of who He is has been obliterated. - Thankfully!
I don't think love can conquer stupidity. Only natural selection can. And that takes a long time.
What about the mother who has a stupid boy, who becomes a stupid man, who does stupid things, then because of his stupidity has a stupid accident and then wakes up to how stupid he is, and then realises how many times his mother has protected him from his stupid actions and his stupid self?
@@rosiemackenzie5976 I don't know the specific situation. Generally, I don't think children are born stupid. They have to be made stupid, usually by stupid parents. Overprotective parents might not equip their child with a good sense of self-preservation. It is possible for the parents to do everything right and the child still falls in with the wrong crowd. There are so many temptations these days.
Collective stupidity can naturally select humanity for extinction
Love conquers stupidity (in the sense it is described in the video and in the sense you have described it) because this type of stupidity is a learnt behaviour that our intellect uses to make us feel safe whereas love is something that we recognise and feel in our heart of hearts. When the feelings generated by our intellectual safety-net are challenged by our own heartfelt recognition of the truth of love we either change our intellectual position to match what we feel or try to rationalise love into something that fits our learnt preconceptions. The ultimate goal of hatred, evil, and stupidity is the eradication of love so if love continues to exist despite these things it has won.
@@andieslandies ...interesting response....learned behavior does describe a lot of stupidity ....for instance learned helplessness can prevent people from acting on an obvious problem whereas if LOVE guided the response they would act.. thx 👍
stupid is not fully learning the polities of the NAZI and projecting on those policies a minority of decisions when the over whelming policy was for the German people and they loved it as all do seeking political power and wealth i don't think he meant stupidly but evil , i guess not able to say that out right
Do not call anyone on earth your father , for one is your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 23:9 .
The lying politicians are counting on people to sign-up to play their game. The bigger the lie the easier it is to sell. For example: think of a world without religion or morals or accountability. How about a global world where there would be no more conflict and everyone worshipped the creation. Jesus is coming back soon with rewards, to stomp on the grapes of wrath, pure evil and to rule and reign in the millennium. This is where the bride of Christ will be prepared for the marriage supper of the Lamb. It's not about the greatness of heart, it's about the greatness of God.
I may know of a couple of these Righteous Ones. You teach the meat and potatoes of our Faith.

Whoever believes in christian fairy tales should not complain on "stupidity".
And yet...here you are.
Dumbfuckastan
The closed-mindedness and cocksureness of those suffering from stupidity are hallmarks of the condition, according to Bonhoeffer.

I am not sure if you read your comments and I truly rarely leave comments, but I feel almost obligated to in this case. I have always had a inner faith in me but I have found it incredibly difficult to claim my belonging to the Christian church for many reasons. I really appreciate your videos and it is incredibly refreshing to see someone preach the word of god in such a way. Here is an interesting experiment: read 'No Exit' in conjunction with C.S. Lewis' 'The Great Divorce'. They are strangely similar works, both presenting Hell in an unexpected and modern way in order to describe the misery of being stuck in the ego but colliding with other egos. They also both have the possibility of a way out, but a way blocked by the barrier of self-preoccupation; people naturally reject perfect Joy and Life and choose misery because they would prefer to keep themselves. However, Lewis, being a Christian, shows that there is a force powerful enough to break the chains of Self, namely, the Love of God.
If it is true that God created suffering in order to make our souls grow, then he himself decided to create these rules, because as Almighty he could just as easily have created completely different rules that would allow us to grow, without having to suffer. Or he could have simply given us the greatness of our souls unconditionally, without us having to do anything at all, simply out of love and mercy. But he didn't do that. To claim that God created suffering for our benefit is, in my opinion, something extremely inhumane and sadistic. These arguments simply don't make sense. The weakness of this argument is that it assumes the limited options available to us humans. But God is free from any restrictions and could do anything if he wanted to. And then always this free will argument: For me, that doesn't justify why a supposedly loving, caring father gives sadistic, perverted and violent people the opportunity to do cruel things, but doesn't give weak and helpless people the opportunity to protect themselves from it. Common people, what's wrong with you?
Thanks for the great synopsis. I think it's a very valid observation that wealth breeds violence and think that point should be made much more in our society. But then again, we prosper from it, so it's convenient to ignore.
I love the term indulge in the rest and still waters. A token of eternity.
