Starter Villain by John Scalzi | Book Review
SUCH fun science fiction book with cats running a supervillain business 😂
And yes, as I mention in the video, I'm without my camera for this one so bear with the strange angle and low res until I'm reunited with it 😄

    I think you should've specified that you're talking about New Series era novels, as opposed to the New Adventures, the 8th Doctor novels, the classic Target novelisations, the Missing Adventures, the Past Doctor adventures, and sundries.

    I found this book on a whim and it was hands down one of the best books I have ever read (not exaggerating) The romance is sweet and adorable while not being the whole plot and the main plot is captivating in its own right not making you want to keep reading only for the romance, highly recommend this book

    This is 2024. My overarching goal is to reduce the number of unloved books (ones I won't re-read) in my library, with a secondary goal of reading or DNFing the ones I haven't read and physically own. It would be nice to have more shelf space, but it's really about the quality and re-readability of the books. For me, eBooks don't count because storage is negligible with how many portable drives I own. For this year, I committed to unhauling at least 100 books (I'm at 80 right now in mid-April), and my buying is controlled by unhauling 1:1 for books over the limit I set for the year, which was 100. So if I buy more than 100 books, new or used, I have to get rid of a book for each one purchased. Because I count volumes of manga, I am already at 94 books acquired (mostly secondhand). The unhaul project will be aided by putting up the Little Free Library I had built, and as soon I do that, I have another 30 books set aside already. My "out" is that I don't count LFL acquisitions, because I trade 1:1 for those. I don't tend to keep those books. I am not a huge collector and hardback only type, but I do prefer books that are in good shape, and many LFL paperback books have been roughly handled.

    The tone of the books early on could be considered 'younger' but even when I compare it to the film that was supposed to be for the "YA" demographic I just simply couldn't. I grew up on the original series through middle school to high-school and beyond; and from the 4th book 'witch I started on' I right away new it was taking me seriously with the dragon 'One-Eye' being transparent on how much he hates humans, Hiccup's fellow viking boys killing innocent birds for the fun of it, a thing that was encouraged (Something Hiccup hated) by the elders and when Hiccup had encountered men from the enemy tribe; large wild eyed hairy men standing over a bloody deer-carcass, that was pretty chilling stuff, someone like me who thought reading 'boring' instead found it Exciting! No, I never thought these books 'Kiddy' and Personally for one who defends the source material to no End, I found it really grating (Especially the TV shows) that aside from a few similes, I could find nothing that compared to the source aside from Stoick and the Netflix villain Grimborn. Ignoring the age group its made for Cressida Cowell really should be given the same accolades that JRR Tolkien was given for Lord of the Rings, for it has all the same beats, a fantasy world found in the past, unlikely heroes, tales of brotherhood, invented languages, fusion of mythology made anew, and the sheer courage of facing impossible odds, when all is stacked against you and all appears lost. I applaud David Tennant's reading of the books especially towards the end of the series. Even through everything else I've seen I still can't think of a more heart-breaking performance than what we received from him in that Snotlout Hiccup confrontation scene and the final scene of Furious (whom I consider The Greatest Dragon in all of Fiction) the Dragon...hate to be that guy, but I can't help but wonder how the version were the ruler of all dragons drools & plays fetch and Hiccup basically gives up his dream due to one bad-guy is the version we call Grown-up? Maybe its cause it wasn't grim-dark like Game of Thrones but, this wasn't just an 'Silly Talking Dragon' story like The Director/Studio seemed to think it was. Witch is sad cause this was Truly, Truly stupendous even if it still has loose ends that don't get resolved and or has children's book logic! (Thinking of the Alvin Lava bubble scene) Even, if its for "Kids" the impact it had on my life cannot compare to what DreamWorks had offered. Sorry!

      Yeah. The claim that the movies are “more mature” is laughable

    • @YamiSpyroX
      @YamiSpyroX 5 месяцев назад

      @@matityaloran9157 And they went around and made that toddler spin-off Rescue Riders, witch is even more Laughable. What I don't understand is just how little the books are discussed removed from the films. The only person I've seen Here do a serious video critique of the book was Dominque Noble, and sadly I don't know if he's ever going to continue that series, since there's not really feasible way to make compare and contrasts to the films/TV shows vs. books with how immeasurably different they are. I am happy though that 'Upside-Down Books' acknowledged how brutal and emotional the books get down the road. Its jarring for a person who only experienced the films reading it, but once you get to a certain point you'll begin to appreciate Cressida's vision possibly more so than Dean's.

    I heard the book, my first audiobook from beginning to end. I was intrigued. Loved the plot and the way it rolled out. Especially towards the last chapters, with all the plot twists. My mind went wild with the description and details the story entailed. Which helped get my attention. Question: What is the full list of the books mentioned within the novel? I Googled a book, the one with the poem, and it's an actual book. Also, the Odyssey was mentioned.

    I really enjoy John Scalzi's books - I've read Old Man's War, Red Shirts, Fuzzy Nation, The Kaiju Preservation Society and Locked In (so far) and all of them have been great. He does have a very intelligent, humourous writing style. I suspect that The Kaiju Preservation Society would match the tone of Starter Villain - I haven't read Starter Villain yet but I do have a copy and I'll be reading it early in 2024. I have read these only now that I'm 23 because my love for httyd came back and I rewatched the movies and series and needed more content ahah I also really relate to you, I never liked to read, and I didn't understand why, I would just read and by the time I finished one page I didn't remember anything at all, but now I managed to read 12 full books in a row! (I don't even know how, I think it has to be about something that I like in the first place) And to finish, I really loved the review, I've been watching everyone that I can find and most of them only read the first book so this one is perfect!

    It was an OK book, but it's not nearly as clever as you are making it out to be. There were too many convenient plot twists used to help progress the story. And the surprise ending? Meh, it was kind of something I would expect a sixth grader to come up with, it wasn't necessary.
