Hey Andrew. I take it you're using Filmora? If so, it's quite simple - just use different layers across the timeline. So your single screen will be on one layer, and then fade in a split-screen layer on top of that one, at the desired point on the timeline where you want to transition.

@@pennyspent Thanks ! What version of Filmora are you using, i have 12 but it wont let me split clips in the advanced edit mode, also how do you make sure the videos sync with the sound ? I exported an mp3 once i had lined up the music, but it seems that each split screen i create means i have to reload the video clip and find the exact point to match the music, seems very over complicated ?
