The Pioneer Mine Museum and Heritage Center in Ely, MN recently were able to add a DM&IR ore car that was retired. I "rode cars" during the summer of 1977 and describe what that was about in a natural iron ore mine.

Footware in the BWCA

There has been a lot of discussion lately in social media about what kind of footware you should use in the Boundary Waters. There are a lot of options out there, and if you are inexperienced, that can be a daunting decision. Here's some background to help you decide what's best for you.

Loved this! Sam has really grown! How lucky he is to have you in his life☺️
Pretty special kid!
Love it❤
Beautiful pups…
Best video ever! Thanks so much for sharing!🥰
It's a family affair in the wild Wolfie woods.
Loved your video, thank you for posting!
Thank you!
I haven’t seen too many berries this year. I was out and about today and most patches were pretty sparse. I have found more raspberries though.
Seems spotty. Sounds like some spots are much better than others!
That was so much fun, felt like I was right there paddling, and now my shoulders are tight.😂
Nice video, Ken. Challenging to keep left and right straight when talking while in action.
Looks like fun!!!
Thanks for putting this together. I enjoyed the history!
Great information Ken!
Great analysis of the pros and cons. And, like you, I've come to realize that there is no 1 perfect boot for everyone. After 40+ years of various types and lengths of trips, I've tried a lot of different footwear. Questions worth asking yourself if you are new to the BWCA: Are you traveling in June-July-August or the colder water times such as May or October? Do you tend toward hot, sweaty feet or always cold feet? How strong are your ankles? Can you tolerate having sand or rocks inside? For me, I have sweaty feet, hate debris in my shoes, and need ankle support so I always use Merrill Moab Mid non-waterproof boots matched with fluffy wool socks. I like having my feet wet during the day but need the support of the boot. In the cold water times I add neoprene socks inside.
After 8 years of going there. I have ditched my Keens for crocks for the last 6 years. Crocks are the best. Non slip. Quick dry. I use a knee-high neoprene sock also during portages. Boots are too heavy. All of us uses Crocks now.
You are absolutely right I have tired many different and types there is not a one size fits all. Summer vs fall rocky trail vs flat trail, strong ankle vs weak ankle, aluminum vs Kevlar and ect.
What kinds do you use?
Thanks for the information. I have asked this same question on the BWCA groups. My trip memorial day I had two pairs of "lawn mowing tennis shoes" portaging the Missing Link and Brandt Lake loops (wet and muddy). No regrets from me, love my keens for sailing etc, but my feet would have been eaten alive by bugs if I took them in May this year. Appreciate the high level discussion of this topic.
Thanks for the feedback! To each his own!
i love how every timr i look up IH JD is advertising
One benefit of this huge load of snow is that it will have finally flattened most or all of the tall-standing grass and weeds that we still had from our winter of no snow that just became a snowy winter. If fires start and get into grass and weeds that are standing tall, the fire will spread fast and hot. Now when it has been flattened, it won't torch and spread so fast and flames won't be able to leap up into low hanging tree branches as easily, so wildfires won't spread quite as fast.
Makes sense.
Informative! Thank you. I'm also pretty concerned about the fire risk this spring, glad we've got a little help
Thank you for this presentation, remarkable how Minnesota is at the forefront in so many odd ways, specifically the most orchids in one environment. Are there nurseries propagating all of these or just a few? I sold some property near mille lacs where you could hardly walk without stepping on lady slippers. I'm in Minnetonka, assuming whatever is here would have been transplanted which is a complicated subject in and of itself, the Minnesota conservation volunteer had an article about a fellow who did it under the auspices of the state and was harassed by harassers, are you still doing the tours?
Are you Kenny Hupila?
Yep!
@@KenHupila I an my older brother worked with your Dad at the Arcturus in Marble also your former father in law I was in school with your Ex Linda I know three of your sisters! Your Dad an I got along quite well he helped with the Western Mesabi Mineland Planning Board representing Balsam Township he was part of the advisory board when I was chairman of the WMLPB. I remember you in your baseball playing days for Grand Rapids!
Good to hear from you! I’m still kicking around up here by Ely and get out in the woods to take pix as much as I can. You must be a Greenway grad! Take care - hope you liked the video!
Their is a old Native American legend that there will be a winter of no snow and a sleep faint would awake the name of the sleeping giant is Mesabi that following year Iron Ore was discovered in northern Minnesota that red giant are the beds of Iron ore!that built American and what was a deciding factor in winning to world wars! What will this non winter bring to mankind!
Ontonagon Michigan here. I am very concerned about going into spring and summer being this dry. This time last year the drifts were over the tops of my clothesline, now I do not have a drop of snow in my yard!
I got my personal best smallie from Basswood Lake. 7 1/2 lbs. 23 1/2 x 16.
If your popple is aspen, the shoots per acre just from flush cutting and shoot sprouting is suppose to be a great way to create deer groceries.
Thanks for documenting your observations. I’m on the northern border of Tennessee. The “advance party” of Robins arrived here January 13th, and the first wave about 2 weeks later. I documented last year to be the same almost to the day. Quite early by our norms.
I live in Louisville, Kentucky. The same here. We had very little snow days nor cold spells.
I recognize where you were at. How long of a hike is that on ice? I'm impressed you still had energy to hand auger a hole after that!
You gave a good summary of our non-winter, Ken, along with some historical comparisons for context. One thing you didn't mention, though, is that we are really not very short on total precipitation, because what we didn't get as snow we did get as rain. And that rain is one big reason we never accumulated much of a snow pack because several times the rain washed away most of the little snow we did have. Also, a lot of the rain we got was able to soak into the ground so our groundwater is pretty much where it should be and I think our lake and river levels are in pretty good condition. We have no way to know what we'll be getting for spring precipitation, but hopefully the relatively good status of our ground moisture will to some extent help avoid a disastrous fire season. Time will tell...
Thanks for your comment. Not sure where your writing from, but we haven’t had any rain here near Ely since early October.
I know there was rain in the southern half of the state, but we didn’t get that up here.
@@KenHupila - We (I'm in Winton) did get early in our "winter" that, had it been colder, would have amounted to a fair amount of snow. I based my comments mostly on Facebook comments from the NWS folks in the Duluth office, plus my own observations.
Thanks for the update Hoops. It keeps us snowbirds in the loop. The winter on the Atlantic side of Florida near Daytona Beach has been the the coldest in the memory of the locals around here. Many mornings in the thirties and forties. Most highs in the 50s and 60s through January and february. It's driven the fisherman crazy trying to figure out where the fish are hiding. the cold-blooded fish are very inactive.
It has been a different winter here as well, up and down temps, unpredictable, late Jan snow, etc., few weeks of frozen lakes so little ice fishing and events on ice, hopefully things get back to rights like you say
Loved it. Thank you.
I have to know! How did you rig hydraulics to your A??
See answer above. One of these days I’ll post a video how it works!
Are using the universal bindings, are these skis good for beginners?
Attaboy hoops. Good to know that some of those senior citizens can still do those things but of course you're a lot younger than I am -
Ya, Wetz! You gained a year on me again a few days ago. Happy Birthday!
Awesome video! Such a good time
Your videos about the hoks are great and i really alleviate them. I am still torn between these in the longer 145cm and a brand i found that had a fishscale in place of the skins. I think for a lot of northern mn bwca excursions the extra glide of the fishscale could be great. Do you have any thoughts on this?
Great adventure and wonderful fishing. Wish I could find a fit 70 y/o in New England to take me fishing. and camping Happy trails.😀
Feint guy is doing the duffer stroke
NICE!
Glad to see you are getting out into the backcountry. The switch to skis is a positive move and I don’t think you will turn back to the slow and cumbersome snowshoe. I use full AT or Randonee ski set up for steep ascents and full alpine style descents after you transition to skins off, boot locked and let her rip! You have a concern about slush and glide and you can solve both. Use a good skin wax or skin prep to fight “globing” and your increase your glide to a degree. Buy ‘em. Best move for your terrain and fun!
So strange to see the lack of snow at this point of the winter. 😮
Super A, right? I mean, where did the hydraulics come from?
Not a Super A. Added the plow and have the hydraulics hooked up to an electric pump that runs off my battery.
Very nice set up. I had a 49 M sold to my dad. Then got a 57 cub. Traded it for a pickup, bad move. Should have kept the cub.
Thanks for sharing, I also have a pair of 145's and love them. Would not hesitate to pick up a pair.
A great review from you, sir, and how cool to see that Pine Martin! I just mounted the bindings on my new pair (I discovered these while visiting family in Alaska a month ago) that I received in yesterday’s mail. I live near Mt Hood, in Oregon and will try mine out tomorrow!
What lake and year?
Lousy photography
In order to get insurance from DJI for my drone. I had to send some footage that shows them it isn’t presently damaged. Posted yesterday and should take it down soon.
What's this? Better yet, what is it supposed to be?
What lake/area was that?
Birch Lake, St. Louis County
