A bit of a slog up a long and steep hill, the gradient is not apparent from the dashcam, but it was hard work!

Standard Swallow setting off on a weekend adventure!

The Standard Motor Club's Golden Jubilee International Rally starts on 14th June 2024 at Norton Park Hotel, Sutton Scotney near Winchester. A big adventure for the Swallow - it has only done 300 miles since 1938!!! It helps to turn the ignition on when trying to start the car... the starter will engage no matter what! Journey distance of around 80 miles - did it make it?
Farewell to the 1934 Austin 7 Ruby
Просмотров 4307 месяцев назад
After 20 years, it was time for the Ruby to move to pastures new, it left the Sussex Coast with a view of the sea to go Dudley, which is probably as about as far as you can get from the sea! About 40 miles of where the car first lived in Badsey, Worcestershire, so back on familiar territory. Thank you for your loyal & unstinting service - the Swallow has big tyres to fill!
Standard Swallow's epic road trip!
Просмотров 4327 месяцев назад
The Standard Swallow embarked on a 207-mile journey from the NEC in Birmingham to the Sussex Coast. Last known to have been driven on the road in 1938, it was again road-worthy in 2022 and had just been pottering on local roads, so this trip was its first BIG Adventure!

Re-grind of the set-screws for the tappets, these were heavily dished so setting of the valve gaps was a bit hit & miss. All re-ground and the gaps re-set, engine is much quieter!
FLOOD - River Adur burst its banks and flooded the A281 at Shermanbury
Просмотров 13410 месяцев назад
Typically, following prolonged rainfall, the RIver Adur burst its banks, I have seen this many, many times, but on Friday, the river flowed above the bridge flooding the A281 road, this is just by the Bull Inn on the outskirts of Shermanbury. After giving way to the southbound traffic, cyclists led the way for the northbound traffic and the little Austin 7 carefully waded through!

CAUTION pot holes under water

They were not kidding, the road surface was mainly pot holes - the road had gone, but the little Ruby valiantly battled on!
Smiths Jackall
Просмотров 107Год назад
Smith Jackall was a built-in hydraulic lifting system, either supplied from the factory to cars, such as a MG YA & MG YB, or available as an accessory. It allows the car to be lifted easily for wheel changing, servicing, etc., using a simple lever & controls, ALL the car can be lifted at once, or just the front or rear.

Wish you had shown the car complete before the strip down as found
That was pretty much as it was - just a pile of bits, the ash frame was totally rotted so could not support the body at all. It was last taxed in 1957, when it fell to bits is something I don't know, but in the early 1960's, but someone appreciated the car for what it was and it was spared the scrap man!
Wow, so many! Lovely to see.
I was waiting for one to start doing doughnuts!
Very rare motor
No backup camera?
Really great seeing such a big gathering ! 👍😊
that engine sounds so sweet, no rush ,just get there, built for a time when time was only numbers on a clock face.
It seemed very happy to be going downhill again!
well done Gary, that gave the gearbox what for..
Good to see she’s going so well .
Looking good 👍!
Oh adorable auto 👍👍
Always makes me smile when I see these in real life, super small and very cute. The world would have been a better place had cars stayed this big.
The first Jaguar sports saloon, no really, built by William Lyons and William Walmsley.
How lovely to see one on the road; she certainly seems to go OK. When a nipper way back in the early fifties and living in Tadworth, a woman living nearby had the coupe version, painted a pale yellow. The back reminded me of an egg and I sometimes wonder whether she (the car, that is!) survives. Can anyone say how many were made?
Sounds like that was the same as mine, on the Austin 7 chassis they made either the saloon or the open two-seater. About 3,500 were made on the A7 chassis and around 150 survive, they built cars on Standard chassis (see my other videos), Swift, Morris, Fiat and Wolseley Hornets.
0:54 Nissan figaro
Nope, it is a 1958 Standard 8 - made in Coventry, UK.
makes mine sound rough lol
What a lovely and elegant early Ruby in Dove Grey.An identical looking car is shown as card No 8 in a set of Player's cigarette cards I have from 1934 or 5 .One of the nicest examples I've seen in a long while - the new owner should be thrilled - sorry for your loss !.
I matched the paint to an original sample on the back of a door hinge, so as close as it could be to how it left the factory. I have that card! The car was my regular driver and racked up thousands of miles each year - that will now fall to the Austin Swallow!
Aww 😢, it’s sad to see her go . Safe journey Lulu !
👍👍❤❤
That is running very smoothly! 👍👏
👍👍👏👏❤❤
Brilliant 🤩! Glad it all went so well !
Brilliant 🎉! Glad you got there safely ! 👍👍
They are so cute.❤. I bet if someone reproduced them with modern running gear it would be a hit.
I can get in them but cant get out!
Failed to indicate when turning right
I guess the Standard part is the engine, I wonder what the Swallow car looks like?
Yes, Standard supplied the chassis and mechanical parts together with the instruments, the rest was fabricated by Swallow - check out my other videos to see what the car looks like!
I've just seen you'll be in the next Automobile magazine. Will look out for that. They take a while to get to me!
That came out in May 2023! They did two articles - one for each Swallow, but holding the Austin Swallow back, so I don't know when that will be published!
@@austinswallow It's in my Feb 2024 edition mentioned in the "Next Month" Column for March 2024. It says "...saved his Austin Seven Swallow from conversion into a replica two-seater...." I always read the magazine on my once a week, hour each way, train journey into the city.
@@asciimation Oh! I did not know this!!! When they featured the Standard Swallow last year, Zack told me when it was going to be in and as both Swallows were photographed & inspected at the same time, he said the Austin Swallow would be on the back-burner! Particularly as Austin 7's had a lot of coverage in 2022. I had not got around to reading my magazine, hopefully, they will send me an extra copy like they did last time, then I can keep one with the car! Thanks for the heads-up!
@@austinswallow I have a subscription so they just turn up for me but I am never sure exactly when. I haven't got the March one yet.
@@asciimation I do too, but it takes me awhile to get to read them!!!
Top tip. I had no idea that mesh was available. Thank you Please post a link of the sofa which contains it. I think the original manufacturer was called the Lace Web Spring Company
Wade Springs are the manufacturer, but a nightmare to deal with, starts off ok, then they just ignore you! I went to a supplier instead & bought a standard product & took it apart & then altered to fit mine, worked well & probably a lot cheaper than have Wade do it! Here's the link: www.jamiltonupholstery.co.uk/product/mesh-top-spring-units/
Looks like a very pragmatic solution!
since made the leather covers and fitted in position, fits perfectly! Satisfying!
@@austinswallowDid you do the covers yourself? That's something I need to start looking into.
@@asciimation Yes, I did, it is not difficult to do, I did it in the traditional way of "tuck & roll", this is how it was done at the factory, is quite forgiving of mistakes AND, most importantly, it can be done on a domestic sewing machine! The modern way of sewing pleated leather with a foam backing is way to thick for a house-hold machine to cope with!
Sounds lovely !
I remember driving through a flooded road in my 1914 Model T Ford, past a modern car that had got stuck!

Quite different weather to here currently. I went out to my shed this evening after work and it was 38C in there!
Always envious that it is nice your side of the world when it is grey & dreary here, but I can say we have summer to look forward to and the days are starting to get longer, so there is hope ahead!
A bit too trusting of all potholes being demarcated with cones.
I was cautious and went down a few unmarked pot holes, at night it could have been a big problem.
Beautiful car
Meh
why
sweet. looks fun haha
Me thinks the man spends more time playing with his cars than mowing his lawn! He's dead right, it's his life.
Asciimilation sent me! Very neat work. Greetings from Pennsylvania.
Hello... I was sent here by the asciimation channel. That's a very interesting car, I don't know anything about a Swallow but I'm sure if I watch a few of your videos I'll learn something. Cheers from the Shed
Swallows were the very first Jaguar cars!
I see.... that would explain all the aluminum..😁@@austinswallow
Lovely action there Gary, i like the spring ratchets holding the levers in position, Gladstone's levers move each other like your original fault as they have no indexing.........might have to come up with something
The plungers were missing, as were the springs, so it was a bit of guesswork, springs just need enough tension to engage, too much and the assembly twists around! Not enough they move together! Austins used a different arrangement on their cars to Standard, but achieved the same result, the Standard has a more engineered fell to it, it was afterall a much more expensive car. I am sure you will do a better job with Gladstone than I did with the Standard! I am trying and your work inspires me to do better!
I love all the little lever and linkages pre-war cars have. My Riley is equally Heath Robinson! Very satisfying when they work.
Great bit of detective work and so staffing when you find the missing part , Some times if you look hard enough the answer is there its just finding it. When I bought my MG it came with a box of parts the owner never fited, the joy when I found out were the last spring went was pure joy. Best of luck with your project.
Great to see your progress ! 👍👍
This was nice! My first car, when I was 17 in 1961, was an Austin 7. The engine ran, but no silencer, no mudguards etc, it kept me going until I was 18, got a licence, and bought a VW.
nice, very nice
