Ocean Reef OR 60
I took me 2 years to find a handle to fit this Ocean Reef OR 60 spinning reel. For some reason handles seem to go AWOL from reels on a regular basis, so this one sat ready to go in my WIP box along with 3 or 4 others in a similar state. This one is ready to get back to fishing now.

    • @new2ufishing
      @new2ufishing 2 месяца назад

      The penn 109 was made for many decades. The 30-109 is not the serial number. It is just the part number of the reel seat. It’s very difficult to know when your specific reel was made. Sometimes the knob style on the handle crank is a clue, but that’s not always reliable and they were frequently swapped. Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • @growleym504
    @growleym504 5 месяцев назад

    Does this video have a point or a message, or present some useful knowledge? I watched all 32 seconds and I didn't really take anything away from it. But I will say that it is a decent reel, for when you don't need the muscle or the line capacity of its bigger brothers, the 209 or 309 reels. Quite a handy little light surf reel or catfish reel, IMHO. It would be nice if it was still made, even if it were made in China like the new 209's are, but it would be a super good reel to produce domestically as before. This is a very simple and durable reel, that demands little more than to be rinsed off after using in salt water or mud, and given routine cleaning and lubrication every few months. Nothing fancy, not much value added gadgetry, just a baitcasting reel that can cast bait, and reel, with the best of them if you educate your thumb and wear a glove, or install a mag brake. But I guess that isn't what the corporate world wants these days. Corporations do not feel responsibility to the customers, but only to the shareholders and board of directors. A product that lasts too long, retarding repeat sales, goes against corporate ethos. The name of the game is planned obsolescence and serial upgrades, not making a solid but not particularly expensive product that lasts for generations. Honestly the whole family of Penn levelwind reels should, in an ideal world, simply soldier on until either humans or fish go extinct, with no major design changes, though I would like to see provision for DIY mag braking, and factory parts for removing the levelwind and top bar, without leaving holes for sand intrusion. Levelwinds are great for trolling or drop fishing, but can slightly suck when you mostly use the reel for casting. I always have one with levelwind, but I remove the idler gear, as well as the worm shaft and gear, on the rest of them because all of my Penns are casting reels.

    • @new2ufishing
      @new2ufishing 5 месяцев назад

      The penn level wind is a great little Reel. I’ve bought and sold many of them over the years. I make all my little 30 second video clips and post them because they are more informative than a static photo for people that want to understand a reel in operation. I actually have hundreds in my RUclips library now so if you can’t get your hands on a particular physical Reel to see its operation, my video clips will show that to you. I make separate fishing videos, sometimes of repairs, sometimes of recipes etc… you can check out the other playlists on my channel to see those. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    In Bangladesh we fixed the Reels under the Rod and right hand operation . But Here we can see the reels r fixed upper side of the Rod . Pl. show some good models of PENN reels which r suitable for us .

      I am not familiar with this technique. It is pretty standard for conventional reels and baitcasting reels to be placed on the upper side of the rod. It is also standard for spinning reels to be placed on the lower side of the rod. This also has to do with the natural bend of the rod blank before the eyes and reel seat are put on by the manufacturer. They check this and make sure that the rod is oriented to the natural bend that occurs in all rods. Thanks for watching and commenting!

       there are left-hand versions out there of the Penn 113, the penn 321, the Penn squall II , and others that you might find if you do a simple Google search. Just remember you have to crank them counterclockwise if you put them on the bottom of a rod.@@shahiduddinchowdhury3380

    It is a pretty standard construction rear drag reel. So there’s nothing special about opening it up and performing the total service. I don’t have many full service videos like that. The best one to watch on RUclips is Dennis Kuntz of Second Chance Tackle. He has multiple videos on rear drag reels, I’m not sure if he has this exact one, but they’re all very similar. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    • @new2ufishing

      Other than working on that bail trigger/handle it’s really just a standard spinning reel. If you have a problem with the bail trigger and firing pin, it’s going to be a bit more complicated. I’ve Gone north for the summer, but if you have a specific question , I can answer it when I get back to Florida in the fall. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Does this reel back reel?

    • @new2ufishing
      @new2ufishing 7 месяцев назад

      No, it does not allow you to reel backwards. It has a standard anti-reverse mechanism and the lever allows it to go into free spool. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      @@new2ufishing thank you! I cleaned some reels for my boss, and I followed a 40 minute video on how to clean this reel. Did everything in the video to the letter. It’s got me puzzled because the reel is operating flawlessly but the handle can spin backwards and operate the reel backwards. I wanted to be certain that this was not normal before I broke it down again. Thank you for the quick reply.

      It probably would mean the pinion gear is sticking or is frozen to the spool shaft . recheck that area.

    • @growleym504
      @growleym504 5 месяцев назад

      @@A1K3NFISHING Possibly somebody took it apart and couldn't figure out how to reinstall the antireverse dog or spring. Or could be broken dog or spring. Or somebody backed the screw out that runs through the dog, without checking the position of the dog or spring. If the eccentric lever pulled back toward you puts the reel into free spool, and pushing it forward engages the handle to the spool through the gears but it then in that position turns either forward or backward, then it is a problem with the dog or the spring. A competent shop will sort this out in minutes. It is difficult to find a video that clearly shows the spring, which is just a bent flat spring in this reel rather than a spiral spring. If the eccentric lever can not put the reel into free spool mode, then it has something to do with the pinion or the yoke or jackplate, maybe. Prbably half of all malfunctioning level wind baitcasting reels are victims of tampering with the reel's innards by those who don't know quite as much about them as they think they do, or who think, "really, what could go wrong?"

      I did a quick Internet search, but couldn’t find any new old stock available, but I would guess that they would’ve been right around the $200 mark. That seems to be pretty standard for the Stratic line in the past 10 years.

    Thanks for all the info. I have been tying my own rigs now for 2 years. I am getting my hooks, snaps, and swivels dirt cheap and great quality. I can't find a cheap source for floats. I have tried Temu, Ali express, ebay, Amazon, you name it. Any advice for a float source would be appreciated. Also, most advice i've received tells to use 20 or 30# line for the rigs, be it mono or fluoro. I just came back from Destin, the fishing was tough for pomps, I surmise my 20# rigs were too visible, any suggestions? Thanks again.

      @new2ufishing 7 месяцев назад

      The maintenance is pretty much like any other conventional Penn. If you are local to Stuart, FL, I can do it for you. If not, check out the videos from 2nd Chance Tackle on RUclips. He has done this reel several times.

  • @new2ufishing
    @new2ufishing 8 месяцев назад

    Well, that is a “loaded” comment as it would be tough to diagnose without seeing it live. You could try to make a little video clip of the current operation and send it to me through my contact information on RUclips. Maybe from a video clip I can give you some direction. I don’t do reel service by mail. You probably have to search out a shop locally. But I will tell you based on tearing it down, it’s quite complicated and, I would suspect nearly impossible to get any parts unless you have a donor. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Sorry for my late reply. I think I need a little better description of what your issue is. Or if you could send me a photo perhaps I can help you that way. As I mentioned in the video, it’s a fairly complicated reel with that bail trigger, so it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s a lot of things that can go wrong with it.
