Ableton Move: a sketchpad or a groovebox? Live trance/EDM jam
Is Ableton Move an insanely competent sketchpad or a somewhat flawed groovebox? We're still trying to figure this out.
One thing is for sure though: it's super fast and fun to use and it sounds great! We are going to do a deeper dive into how the Move stacks up against other grooveboxes like Push 3 Standalone, MPC and Elektron boxes like the Syntakt. For now though, we just wanted to show a trance sketch we're working on.

Ableton Push 3 Standalone - Live performance with the MPE pads

It's about time we introduce the Ableton Push 3 Standalone to our channel! In many ways, this can be seen as the king of the production grooveboxes. The standout feature is those expressive MPE pads. MPE stands for MIDI Polyphonic Expression and means you can really play the pads as if it's an instrument, along with pitch glide, polyphonic aftertouch and other features. I find it hard to work with samples of live instruments that I record to the pads.. I can't time stretch them to be perfect loops :/
Hi can u made please a Video Shows make Full Song edm in arranger view with automations etc? Thx
So much fun to watch your MPC videos
Thanks a lot! That made my day. 😊
you need to connect the unit and power on
Haha it is definitely powered on. Check the pads flickering if you didn't spot it. Screen isn't very bright from these side angles. Connect it to what though you mean?
At first when Move came out I thought it really missed the mark. As time passes I start to see it as being a potential option as something for starting fairly simple ideas for the times that I like to spend a couple hours in a coffee shop and make simple beats. But then I remember that I can just get a controller for Koala Sampler and use my phone haha. I will say, though, the synths on Move are pretty nice and very usable.
Yeah I can't really decide yet what I think about it. It's definitely a great sketchpad and it's fun to use, but it's also clear that it's meant for you to pick up the work in Live and finish the project there. I think it doesn't really shine as a standalone groovebox end to end, since the endpoint shouldn't be the Move itself. You probably have a more glamorous life than I do so I rarely find myself in coffee shops, period. 😂 Working from home in a suburb of Sweden here. 😊 But *if* I wanted to make music in a coffee shop, I'd honestly probably just bring my laptop and in-ear Bluetooth buds and work on some existing project there rather than sketching new things on a groovebox. Wouldn't be able to handle the stares from others otherwise. 😂 But that's just me! The Move definitely fits the bill though. 😊
And yes, the synths are really great sounding, and the Move product guy has indicated that there will be other synth engines on it in the future and that it will see years of firmware updates, so that's promising. My #1 personal wish would be a way to record a jam into Live's Arranger view.
@@sinewaymusic Hahaaa the coffee shop music sessions are usually pretty rare, but there is one that I go to maybe once or twice a month and sit with my MPC One Plus on my lap for about an hour or so before I go to teach piano. Definitely not a good enough reason alone to get the Move. Right now I'm curious, at most, when it comes to Move, so maybe in a couple years when used prices are really reasonable I might try one just for fun. I'm just gonna hold off on any Ableton hardware while they develop it all a little more and explore the potential of trying something by Elektron.
@remyvegamedia You teach piano to students? That's very cool! Anyway, resisting that initial urge is often a good thing. And Elektrons are so fun. 😊 Working on a Digitone 2 sketch as we speak.
@@sinewaymusic Yes, sir! Full time teaching and doing side gigs mixing at this point. Gave up the gigging on keys to teach and don't regret it at all haha. Awesome! Looking forward to hearing what you share in regards to Digitone 2. Your Digitakt video made me realize I think I'd much prefer one of Elektron's synths over the DT2 or OT and Digitone 2 is at the top of my list right now.
I'd love to see more about how you approach building out your session for a song/jam. IE developing a single beat, bassline, lead, etc into the multiple versions that you use to play a structured song
Thanks, we'll definitely consider that! Basically how to go from a loop to the full song structure.
Stella just looks so much better with the black keys. I just wonder if a novice like me who needs to learn the basics of playing might get a bit thrown without the black/white seperation.
@@badlefthook624 I agree, it's beautiful! I wouldn't worry about this slowing down the learning of which keys are which. It's not like you can't clearly see which are the normal keys and which are the proper black keys by shape and pattern. If that adds another five minutes of training, it's well worth it in my opinion. 😊
Great video showing what the Move is capable of. I would love to see more content of you using the Move! Nothing specific, just cool jams or whatever you feel like doing! Other than that, great video!
@@CarbonRacingYT Thanks, and I'm glad you liked it! Yes, we'll definitely be doing more on the Move, I already have two other sketches coming together. Will also be doing a form of review at a later point. Hope to see you around, thanks for your feedback!
I'd be interested in seeing how you take a track started on Ableton Move (maybe the one in this video) and complete it in Ableton Live. I know how I do it, but I'd like to see how you do it. 😆
Hey there, I appreciate the suggestion. That might be difficult to record into a video since that process is often very fluid and unpredictable. Possibly I could give a walkthrough of what we ended up doing after the fact, so more of a summary than a documentary-style video? Let me think about this. Would you be more interested in the creative process or, say, the mixing process? Thanks again!
@@sinewaymusic I wrote up a whole long reply, then the page refreshed and I lost it. 😥 I'm sure whatever you come up with would be great. I always enjoy your videos (even if you are using gear I don't own).
@@ChipWarden Thanks again, it makes me glad to hear that. Yes, we'll definitely do something like this soon. :) (Sorry about the lost message, I hate when that happens!)

@@Harlem-Instrumental Thanks! It was fun, and I have to say, quick! Very fast and easy to learn. 😊
Great track at 16:30! Love the sound and layering. Also love my Syntakt, but we're still at the point of getting to know each other ;-)

On a somewhat related note, with the Ableton Push 3 (not the standalone version), does it only work with Ableton Live? Or can it send out MIDI data to any hardware synth?
@@JoshuaSimonson909 There's very little that Push 3 can't do. It definitely can control and play other midi gear, just like the MPC, the Syntakt and the Digitone 2, and all other grooveboxes I've tried, including this one, the Move. 😊
@@sinewaymusic good to know, i had to send back my MPC One +, sadly the firmware seems to just not work at all with sending or receiving midi info, so i'm looking into getting something else now, either the Ableton Push 3, or the Elektron Digitakt II
@JoshuaSimonson909 That sounds odd. MPC midi definitely works but can be a little confusing to know how it's set up. But perhaps you didn't click with it otherwise either?
@@sinewaymusic it was just sending out midi data inconsistently, seems others have had this issue for years as well I found out, I tried all the workarounds and nothing seems to work sadly, that said I did order the Oxi One sequencer to use with my Hydrasynth, this should create most sounds I want, as far as finding a MPC alternative, I may try out the Ableton Push 3, or a Elektron Digitakt II. The MPC One Plus wasn't that bad by itself, but the midi troubles were a deal breaker for me.
@JoshuaSimonson909 Interesting. Never had issues with midi on the MPC, but I'm sure there can be issues from time to time. Hope you'll find the ideal setup for you. 😊
For what it promises to do-a mobile sketchpad for Ableton Live-it's insane, IMO. It's probably one of the most intuitive and instant groove boxes on the market. Within 5 minutes, you have figured it out, and you just run with it without ever having to contemplate a manual or tutorials to grasp the essentials. I do wish it's better with loops, though. Ableton Live's strength has always been its ability to throw in loops and launch them in Session view without being bothered about tempo. The Move, however, lacks any advanced Warping features, and the fact that its factory soundbank doesn't come with any loops is telling.
@@Drrolfski I have to agree, it's one of the quickest learning curved I've experienced so far. This sketch was literally done in an hour. The key thing I'm missing is a way to record a live jam like the one here in this video into the Arranger view of Ableton Live, along with all clip launches, mutes, and automation. That way you could record a jam like this while still being able to properly mix it in the daw. As a second best, I wish it had usb multitrack support like even the old MC-101 does. But other than that, this is an amazingly capable sketchpad/groovebox! Nice avatar BTW. 😊
@@sinewaymusic I didn’t know for the MC-101 multitrack possibilities… thanks!
@@froidurotclement3282 Yeah, it multitracks all four tracks in stereo over USB, plus the mains/stereo mix down. It seems like Move should be capable of this too, but I know little about those things. One can always hope! 😊
The lack of warp for loops surprises me…. But, I gave up this hobby 10 years ago maybe… and this box was irresistible. 5 min and wow. It has to me kind of that “magic” the first iPhone introduced. The blood sweat and tears that must have went into its creation shows. If there was an award for most intuitive design ever, I’d give it to this.
@@rpaulseymour I agree with the sentiment of that, it's definitely the most intuitive groovebox I've used. Very few surprises once you figure out the basics.
Aren’t all grooveboxes sketchpads? I mean, in the end, a DAW will be necessary for final mixing, mastering, and refinement.
@@GeorgeHzMusic Yeah I agree it's hair splitting but I've heard it being described as a sketchpad in many places, sometimes to justify a certain lack of features. With this sketch, since it doesn't support multitracking, the final "mixing" basically just amounted to some eq:ing and compression.
You would think that if it wasn't for the fact that some of these grooveboxes make it notoriously cumbersome to export the stuff you made on them into a DAW. The Move is best in class in that regard.
@@Drrolfski I might say that's where the line between a groovebox and a sletchbox might be drawn. 😊 Because I'd say the Push is best in class since it lets you record a full live jam into the Arranger view, whereas the Move doesn't.
Easy to understand, great video! A video on how you would prepare for mixing from MPC to Ableton would be great also. Thanks.

Nice one. My tip for using the MPC Live 2 outside: Get a Magma Ctrl carry case that doubles up as a sunscreen, allowing you to read the screen better.
@@Drrolfski That's a nice tip and I wonder if that's not exactly the case I have. I just didn't use it here. The thing is, I saw the screen very clearly from my own angle, but the way we placed the cameras vs the very bright summer sky made it difficult to get it to show on the video. Will try harder next time. 😊
Not Magna apparently, Flyht Pro HSC Controller Case 3. Same same but different. :)
I like the concept of making videos with a single machine like our dear MPC Live! So I wonder how you do to record and create these videos without any cable connected to it (?) You record everything in the MPC and then synchronize sound and image in post production? 🤔
Hey, thanks for the feedback and yes, we definitely prefer to use a single machine at a time for all our productions. Honestly, midi configuration and sync isn't fun. As far as production goes, yes exactly, the procedure on the MPC is so simple it's brilliant: you hit Over Dub and arm Automation and the press Play Start. Note that if you plan on playing pads across multiple tracks, be sure to enable multi-track arming. But if all you do is to record pad and track mutes and knob twists like I mostly do here, you only need to arm one track as long as you stick to that one. It's hard to see the screen on this jam but I mostly stayed on the track mute page, so when I'm hitting the pads, I'm controlling the track mutes. And then of course I have the Q-Link knobs connected to project parameters (bass, pad, arp, lead), mainly on Q-Link page 1. This all gets recorded onto the full song sequence, which we save when the recording is done. We then take that sequence and drop it into the daw for final mixing and tweaks. The MPC2 VST support makes this so easy since we prefer to do the final mix in Ableton Live. Oh, and we have two fixed cameras on tripods and a third camera that's handheld by my friend and other half of Sineway. Yes, we then sync those three cameras and layer the final/mixed version of the jam on top of it and sprinkle it with b-rolls. We have a passion for photography too which you can probably tell from the video. It was such a beautiful sunset so we spent more time shooting b-rolls than we spent recording the actual jam. 😂 Full video is linked to from this short. Hope this clarifies things! Happy to answer any follow-up questions too. 😊
@ Yes, cool! Just in case you have to make videos on your own, some tools can be useful like a stabilizer for smartphone. I own the DJI Osmo Mobile 3, witch is for example able to follow a subject/person in motion... or create subtle camera movements on his own, which is useful enough to create "non-frozen" videos 👌
I couldn't walk around and jam at the same time anyway so not sure how helpful it would be, but I'll look into that, appreciate the tip!

This is making it harder for me to choose between the Digitone II or a MPC One +, I will just end up getting both, they both look so good! 😆
They are both great! I've spent years with the MPC and the Digitone 2 is obviously the new baby, but both are wonderful instruments and platforms to make music on.
Very nice, so many videos should people using the MPC units JUSt for hip-hop and rap beats using samples, but i'm glad the MPC units can do so much more, to be honest, I can't make up my mind about which groove-box/seqencers to get, I love the Elekton Digitone II the most i'm finding out, but I also want the MPC One +, and that fun hands on Polyend Synth, I think I'll get all 3 in time, not sure which one to get first 😆
Yeah it's tough to choose. It's also hard to give any definitive recommendations because it all depends so much on what kind of music you enjoy and whether or not you're comfortable with hooking gear together or if you prefer to work with just one device at a time like I do. Given the music *we* make, and the way *I* enjoy using hardware (as in, one at a time), if in theory I could only keep one single instrument, it would probably have to be the MPC or maybe the Push 3 given that it's less limiting and allows for both samples and synthesis in one single box with a workflow that I'm fast and comfortable with. But I can't count on my fingers the number of times a new musical idea has come out as a pure result of the fun workflow of the Elektron boxes, so I would surely miss the Elektron workflow greatly. I feel like the Elektron boxes give me more of an "intimate" feel, where I'm connecting with it at a deeper level, but it also requires a bit more work to get it to sound the way I want, if that makes sense. Whereas on the MPC, there's no shortage of great synth presets to pick from so it can sound like just about anything I want. Not sure if any of that makes sense. Again, buy used if you can. The MPC One is very easy to find good deals of in the used market. You can usually sell it at the same price if it isn't for you. Same with the Syntakt. Less so with the Digitone 2 of course. :)
Love the bass. Is it also a Jura preset? Or one you made? And if so, which onboard synth did you use?
Hey, thanks! Yes, it's a Jura preset that we only edited slightly. Actually if you head on over to the long-form video connected to this short, you can see the name of the preset on the screen. I think it's called Hide and seek or something along those lines. It's a really cool synth overall!
@sinewaymusic thanks for the reply, and I will!
Part of me was legit considering the Polyend Tracker mini or Polyend Tracker +, but the workflow just seems not quite there for me compared to what I've heard about the stuff from Elektron, glad I watched this video before I jumped the gun on either of them, but still not 100% against them yet, I do wonder if the MPC One + is similar to the Elektron groove boxes in workflows?
I wouldn't say they are similar, see also my other reply to your comment in another video about the differences. The Tracker workflow is much more programmatic than the Elektron workflow, which is more hands-on with encoders and step sequencer buttons. The true strengths of the Trackers, as I see it, are the portability and the ability to include samples *and* synthesis - with polyphony - in one single device. That gets them closer to the MPC in that aspect. But it's also a very different workflow that you either love or don't, whereas I'd say that the MPC workflow is more traditional and reminiscent of a DAW workflow.
@sinewaymusic ok gotcha, funny thing is, i like all of these approaches, hence why I'm having a hard time choosing just one, I think I'll get the MPC One + first, then add the Elekton Digitone 2 and the Polyend Synth and a Polyend Tracker Mini, I just feel they all have their place in my workflow
@@JoshuaSimonson909 Just be wary of GAS. That's why I always recommend buying used gear if you can. :) But other than that, it sounds like a good plan.
@@sinewaymusic indeed! I may be getting a bit gassy, but I do feel like all have a place in my workflow, that said, I will try the MPC One + first, and who knows, maybe that'll do it for me alone, if not, I got other things to try out, i'll take this one device at a time!
@JoshuaSimonson909 That sounds like the right approach! In my experience, it takes a while to develop a strong relationship with a new piece of gear and it's worth spending time with it in standalone to learn it inside out before hooking it up to other gear. Hope you'll like it!
They’re even better since you have full control over the parameters and ranges 😂
@@Expectaz I both agree and disagree. 😊 What's so special about Elektron's ctrl+all feature is that it's so immediately available to completely change up a pattern. Not sure where to take a song and what a breakdown or buildup should sound like? Simply pull the filter down across all tracks. It's so immediate and with no setup needed. Once you do have a great idea of where to take a song and how to perform with it, the precision and flexibility of the MPC macros are unbeatable, on the other hand. So I'd say they serve different purposes. Elektron is great as a source of inspiration and happy accidents, and the MPC is great for ultimate precision and control once you *do* know where to take the song.
@ Ok, let’s agree! 😁 Both machines are great
@@Expectaz Yes, I agree, let's agree! ✨😂
✨✨
this is for sure a massive and underratet feature, performance wise i think the mpc is with this feater above the elektron octatrack. What i think the menu is missing, is the envelope follower like in the force. its like free lfos and would take the mpc sounddesign wise to an elektron level also
I agree, an envelope follower and some kind of free LFOs would be amazing to have!
I do wonder if Elektron will add in a arpeggiator per synth tracks for the Syntakt? That is the only thing I feel like I might miss once I get it, but it's not a deal breaker
I suspect they won't add it since they seem to be very intentional about their user interface and I struggle to figure out how they'd integrate it without tedious meny-diving. But I agree it's not a deal-breaker. Plus, doesn't the Polyend Synth have an arp anyway?
@@sinewaymusic yeah the Polyend Synth does have an arp, so I am good anyhow
Thank you kindly sir 🫡🤟

Please make a tutorial for one of your project from start to finish please please please 😊
Will definitely consider this, thanks for the feedback!
It would be nice if we could use a Faderfox or something like it as additional Qlinks on the MPC! If you ever feel like doing a tutorial about how you built your tracks and make music, that'd be awesome! Not many people make this style of music on the MPC on YT. In all cases, thanks for the video and happy new year!
Please I double agree with this comment Please help us musicians like myself switching from $200 basic keyboard to a full blown standalone workstation daw machine
Thanks, I really appreciate it and will consider doing a tutorial about the makings of a track. It's not an area where I feel particularly qualified because each person's creative process is so unique to themselves, but perhaps we could do some form of track breakdown, showcasing the sounds and talk a bit about what thoughts went into the sketching of the track. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion, will definitely consider something like this! I have no experience with hooking up a Faderfox to the MPC but you're saying it's not possible? I guess you can't midi map to a particular q-link, but rather you can only map directly to parameters?
@ exactly, you can midi map controllers easily, but they aren't "proper" qlinks. As for the track tutorials, a break down would be pretty awesome as you suggest. A bit like Gabe Miller does once in a while. It would help me understand the many layers, rhythms, etc, and just how you generally approach making a song. My own background is more in classical music (cello) and guitar. I love many forms of electronic music but am still ramping up about how to even get going, my own stuff is still pretty bad 😂 Anyway, it's really more of a wish on my end as I am a fan of your music :) Cheers!
@droussel7359 Thank you, it means a lot. The cello is my favorite solo string instrument! I understand and that could be a fun thing for me to do too. To your point, it's not just about the tracks but also about the thought that went into the composition. Adding this to our pipeline. 😊
You don’t to have have a vision with these devices. They are just as capable as elekron devices and i have both elektron and polyend tracker.
@@BIG1TOWER I think a lot of it comes down to personal taste and how one device clicks with you differently than another one. I'd say they are capable in different ways though. 😊
Nice way to show off some of the Force features. Happy 2025🎉
@@Harlem-Instrumental Indeed, it's a good example of a feature that originally came to the Force. Exciting to finally have it on the MPC. Happy new year!
I really haven't tapped into the Q link macro functions of MPC3. I was really excited when I learned about them and I feel like these features are gonna be some of the more useful and deep features for playability and improvisation once I actually start digging in. I've really enjoyed using automations on Submixes snd the master track. These are the exact tutorials I'm hopin to see for MPC! So thank you for cracking this open! There's a suprising lack of in depth tutorials on some of these things in MPC in general and it can ce such a convoluted process fonding these things out by trial and error. For example there's only about 5 videos total on the sound design asoects of MPC synths and it's only Opx-4 haha. Part of why I was able to get up and running on Ableton so quickly was the vast amounts of tutorials for in depth functionality. MPC has so much in depth possibilities but 90% of the popilar users that get airtime use the absolute most basic function on the MPC and generally know very little about synthesis and sound design in general because they're so focused on sampling. I'm really hoping with MPC 3 Beta that Akai gets some MPCs in the hands of really capable electronic musicians so that they can start showing its potential as a synth based electronic production groovebox. Great stuff again, guys!
P.s. Forgive my frequent long-windedness in these comments! Haha
So weird but RUclips didn't show this comment earlier today. 🤔🤣 Anyway, thanks for your comment and glad you appreciated the tutorial! There will be more to come here and we'll for sure do a track breakdown too since this seems like something more than a few people have requested. You're right, a large part of the MPC community is naturally focused on sampling, whereas we come at it from the perspective of electronic music producers. The thing about the MPC is that it's so versatile and we hope to show more of that in 2025. Thanks again!

Hi Workshop this also in record Mode dir automation ?
@@dieauswandereruklondon2857 Hi, did you mean if it records as automation if you arm it? Yes, this gets recorded in a performance. 😊 Hope this helps.
That Amiga mouse at 3:16! Lot of good memories...
Deluxe Paint 4! My fondest memory of the Amiga 500. ❤️
Thanks for walking through this, showing some of the many possibilities this can give. Seeing it is very different from just imagining what can be done with the expanded abilities.
@@DocTheopolis Glad it was helpful, thanks for the feedback!
i'm debating on getting Syntakt or the Digitone II, I'm leaning more on the Syntakt since it seems to do drums better than the Digitone, but I want to hear what you think are the differences between the two
@@JoshuaSimonson909 Hey Joshua! This is the million dollar question, and I just got the Digitone 2 myself. It's too early to form a definite opinion, but I think you have got it right that the Syntakt will be more immediate when it comes to getting the drums to sound right. It feels like it's more of a drum computer than the Digitone 2. On the Digitone 2, so far I've been relying more on presets for drums. However, the drum engine on the Digitone is powerful and has a very useful parameter for "transient", as well as a noise section. It's pretty intuitive. I'll make a video about this shortly actually, but the longer form "Syntakt vs Digitone 2" video will have to wait until I've fully formed my opinion about it. If you have any questions until then, don't hesitate to ask. 😊
@sinewaymusic yeah I'm thinking the Syntakt is the way to go for me since i like the it's percussion sounds more, but I'm not 100% sure, there are so few videos showing the differences between the Digitone 2 and the Syntakt's drum capabilities, that said Elekton is advertising the Syntakt as a drum computer, so I feel that's the safe bet for a deep dive into drums and percussion in general, but I'm wondering if you'll have a deep dive video of the Syntakt vs the Digitone 2 before the 9th of January, that's when I'll have enough money to get either one, but not both.
@@JoshuaSimonson909 I definitely won't have a video ready by the 9th, still actively trying to form my opinions about it. I would say that if you're mainly interested in the drum side of things, the Syntakt is probably the way to go. Both can do drums *and* synth sounds, but the Digitone 2 offers more depth on the synth side of things, while it sacrifices some of the quickness in the workflow of the Syntakt on the drum side of things. On the Syntakt, I never reach for presets. I simply pick e.g. a Snare machine and dial it in to taste. On the Digitone 2, I'm still relying on presets, but I could imagine that over time, you can build your custom set of go-to presets for the kinds of drum sounds you love and then adjust it to taste from there. So, the DN2 requires more of an upfront investment to get a good set of drums going, whereas the Syntakt invites you to just dial in the sounds as you go. I'm coming at it from a slightly different angle where 80% of the music we make is melodies and harmonies, and 20% are drums. So for me, in theory, the DN2 offers more breadth because of its more sophisticated melodic synth sound engines. But right now I'm much slower on the DN2 because I've literally only used it about 10 hours so far! :) I'd expect a video about it around the Jan-Feb timeframe given our bi-weekly release schedule, so if you have any other questions in the meantime, I'm right here. :)
@@sinewaymusic gotcha! Yeah, i think based on your description I'll go with the Syntakt, I'm also going to augment my sequencer workflow with the Polyend Synth, it's like the Digitone 2 but with a lot more synth engines and hands on approach, these two together should really be great, i just have to figure out how to midi clock them together 😆
@JoshuaSimonson909 Sounds like a great setup! I'm more of a single-box-at-a-time kind of guy but getting the Polyend Synth to talk to the Syntakt shouldn't be an issue. Then you're more than covered on the melodic synthesis side too. 👌
Mini lol … I got the OG and now the plus the mini ist a waste…
@@KHNIsTunes The Go? Which one is that? 🤩
@@sinewaymusicfunny text auto correction 😂
@KHNIsTunes Ah, I see. The Mini is only relevant if you enjoy making music on the go, though in all honesty the Tracker+ is pretty portable too. 😊
Syntakt sounds great, nice track.
@@PFDarkside Thanks! And agreed, the Syntakt can sound great. 😊
