    Hi Lori, Thanks for the video. Years ago, I switched from Lightroom Classic to using a combo of Bridge/Camera Raw/Photoshop. When I made the switch, I moved all of my photos from LRC with one easy step. It's a process that works with Bridge, Camera Raw and the new Lightroom Desktop and it doesn't involve the cloud at all. Just go into LRC and into the Library module. There, select 'All Photographs' from the Catalog Panel. For me, that's the top left panel in the LRC interface. Select all the photos using Edit>Select All. Then save the metadata for all the selected imaged by choosing Metadata>Save Metadata to Files. For me, the process just took a few minutes. If your files are DNG files, the data will be save inside those files. But for me, since I'm a Canon shooter and my files are cr3 files, the data was saved as a sidecar file. After this process, my files along with any edits made inside were available inside Bridge (in terms of seeing the file as edited in the interface), Camera Raw and in Lightroom Desktop. Note that an xmp file will be saved for all photos, not just the ones with edits. But these are tiny files so that doesn't bother me. And it allowed me to not worry about what is still in my LRC catalog. Anyway, hope this is helpful. Mary

      Mary, thank you for sharing that I think for me I didn’t wanna add another program like bridge but that is a great option. If other viewers want to consider it I’m also not sure how long it would take to load a huge catalog. Could you share how big your catalog was when you made that move. Thanks for sharing

      @@lorilankfordphotography Hi Lori, I’m not suggesting that folks move to Bridge although I much prefer it to Lightroom Classic. And the new Lightroom Desktop is a great option but it doesn’t really give me anything I don’t already get from my current workflow, so I’m sticking with it. The only thing that I was really trying to say is that there’s a pretty easy way to move photos from LRC to Lightroom Desktop. When I did my move, I’m guesstimating that I had about 30,000 images. And I think it took maybe 5 minutes. But, its been a couple of years, so my memory could be a bit hazy. Hope that helps! Mary

    Hi Lori, I'm a bit confused by Lightroom Classic vs Lightroom. Do you meant make the Switch from Lr Classic to Lr CC? Please correct me if I misunderstand: in the Cloud you do not need catalog?

    • @lorilankfordphotography
      @lorilankfordphotography 3 дня назад

      Yes changing from classic to just LR.

    • @lorilankfordphotography
      @lorilankfordphotography 3 дня назад

      You do not use a catalog system like Lightroom classic you actually just use your file system from your computer. Hopefully that’s using an external drive for storing all your images. It just cuts the step of the catalog which can be very confusing, especially for beginner or newer users in the Lightroom system so my recommendation unless you already are a pro at classic to use just Lightroom

  • @JorgeLausell

    Gosh: Did I get this wrong all along? Isn't that: Catalogs are where the edits reside. The raw-original files are stored where they are stored. That's what goes bonkers when the files are moved. The Catalog, the files with the info on the edits, can't find the Raw that they refer to. For instance: Right now, after a 5-year hiatus from photography, (family emergencies, injuries and sickness) I need to work out what to do about how to carry on. One issue is that I need to upgrade my computer. It was old and slow 5 years ago! How to proceed? On the one hand, those old files need to stay together then somehow the catalogue files and the raw files need to snuggle down in the new computer. On the other hand, I want to consider using the new more cloud-based system. My thought ranges from doing whatever painstaking procedure needed to keep them all together, to the outrageous option to simply moving the raw files into their new home and starting over. Through the smidge of work I've done processing these years and the bit I've been seeing on new features to keep up, along with my advancing sense of esthetics, I can redo what I am moved to, as I have time. I need to focus on the new work anyway. What I like about the cloud-based system is that I can have my cake while I eat it! Either or seems lame, doesn't it? What do I want? Well, the bulk of my raw files here in their primary home, while being able to move selected ones from my cameras, onto my tablet and laptop, to process along the way. Then, when I get home, I can polish off what I wish, here, while moving the raw onto my local drives. I can move finished photos back into the cloud to have available as strikes my fancy, serves my needs. Given that the 2ndary home for the photos are on a NAS, those, ultimately, are available at my whims, too. Is this too much?

    • @lorilankfordphotography
      @lorilankfordphotography 3 дня назад

      So many great questions I think you just have to decide if the effort to move all of the old images to the cloud version or into folders on your external drive. If you truly feel that you will need access to those images on a regular basis then it would be important to move them for me. I chose not to do anything with my Lightroom classic catalog. It is just sitting there in Lightroom classic and I can open the application and see those images anytime. Totally being honest I only opened Lightroom classic to look for images in Lightroom classic one time last year. So for me, it is just not worth the hassle to deal with over 100,000 images in classic. I just started fresh with Lightroom in 2024 and continuing it this year but that’s what worked for me. I do like your idea of the flexibility of the cloud and think you will enjoy it once you get it all set up.

    Smart Albums only working with Cloud sync is a showstopper for me; I need that capability in desktop Lightroom as well. I therefore rely on the Smart Collections feature in Lightroom Classic meeting the crucial requirement for me.

  • @Reza-S1340
    @Reza-S1340 5 дней назад

    Unfortunately collections, virtual copies,… only apply to your photos in the cloud. Local partition of LR doesn’t have these useful functionalities. And if you have a lot of photos, you can’t move them to the cloud. If Adobe wants its LR (non-classic) to become more popular, they need to find a solution… I don’t like cataloging my photos because of the valid reasons you covered. My solution is using Bridge plus ACR. It has its own challenges….

    • @lorilankfordphotography
      @lorilankfordphotography 3 дня назад

      Yes, I missed the collections at first but actually found working with my file system just as useful if not more useful it’s just a shift in mindset. I also did not want to move over 100,000 images to the cloud even though they should have been able to transfer since I have the one terabyte version. So I just left my catalog in Lightroom classic and it’s there if I need to use or access any of those images. I’ve only accessed it once in an entire year. :) for me moving forward with a new system and leaving the old where it was works best but everyone has to decide what works for them. If you’re a pro at Lightroom classic and the catalog then keep going.!!!

    Hi Lori. My question is about your photoshop panel on the right side. I’m wondering why yours looks different than mine. Is it because you are using a Mac or have you reworked the panel. It looks less complicated than mine. I love your video! I’m not very proficient with photoshop but you are excellent at presenting your techniques that I can easily follow along. Thanks again.

      Hi, I have it set to the photography panel so if you go to window view, I think you can select photography which is simpler. I also minimize or close the boxes that I don’t need so there’s a little three - hamburger symbol in each box and you can actually close boxes that you don’t use. I hope that helps

    Very interesting shots Lori. I have dabbled in ICM with mixed results. I particularly liked your results with the jiggle effect, such as the empty park bench at 5:26 (lower center). It looks like something Claude Monet might have painted. I have a question -- When the shutter speed is a fraction of a second, how do you normally sequence initiation of camera movement with pressing the shutter button? Do you move then shoot or simultaneously do both or.........? Thank you.

    i am strongly considering switching to local LR instead of LRC tbh. The entire UI in Classic is so ridiculously outdated and... inefficient. all the module things and whatnot take up so much space on my screen, it is bloated with so much stuff i have no use for and... i mean just looking at your LR screen and you have filters and whatnot straight on top... in LR every time i want to filter stuff or do anything i need to click pull out menus or submenus and go back and forth and i cant stand it anymore. LR ui is so beautifully clean and efficient. also the more time passes, the less i enjoy catalogs tbh. its like a skin ontop of folders making everything more complex. if i want to quickly go to a folder and copy some photos over... i dont even know where they are because LRC manages the folders on its own. i need to go into LRC for everything. And when lets say your catalog gets corrupted... you are basically f**ed. It just feels like you have no control over your own files and you are depended on LRC for your files. Back in the day i used bridge with my own folder structures. i was easily able to move files around, or edit files directly or backup my entire folder. Everything is just that bit more complicated. want to delete some photos... guess what LRC only throws them out of the catalog and you re left with like thousands of accidental dead files somewhere in random folders instead of just clicking delete... and it actually means delete because its the file itself.
