Just an average guy making music. You may know me as the guy who created the original pedalboardplanner.com or from my other RUclips Channel @johnnymatthews.
I've been playing the guitar for most of my life and wanted to share some of the things I've learned with you. I don't claim to be a great guitarist, but I am passionate about playing.

Acoustic Guitar and TONEX? You Might Be Surprised
Acoustic preamp captures could be a handy use for TONEX that has barely been delved into at this point. With minimal effort, my acoustic sounds much better with one of these preamp captures. I'm sure with tweaking, it could sound pretty great. The guitar audio is straight out of TONEX on my computer. I did not do any post processing or EQ afterwards.

Your Guild’s piezo pickup is quite squaky on its own. I own a Taylor 710BCE , and a Fishman Aura and I get a much better sound, which is to be expected. But the Aura capture helps your Guild a lot.
It’s 24 years old and seen better days. I need to just upgrade my electronics.
Estos valores midi también funcionarían con el tonex one conectado al chocolate con clable USB C?
Excellent! I'll try Tonex MIDI control. Thanks a lot!
Please dont waste your hard earned money on soon to be outdated junk. Get a reissue deluxe reverb and a sm57 done. How good can it sound? 26:30ish ruclips.net/video/nvKACDGVDX4/видео.htmlsi=JEtlAVsH5_Zs-aHC If you absolutely must go ampless. Try a tech21 fly rig 2 at least it retains an analog path and doesnt suffer from processor latency issues . Ps i do own a pod express that i use for quiet practice. In a pinch, it could work as a live gig backup amp solution. Sounds good clean, but it gets ugly when the dirt is added.
@@derosa504 I’m glad you’ve found something that works for you. I’m a year into playing live with the tonex and have been very pleased.
@ it is a good time to be a musician, so many choices.
@ This! Totally! Wanna go full analog? You can, want an all in one digital box? you can. Wanna run some hybrid rig? Go for it! Wanna turn your guitar into a fully functional supersonic jet? Oh wait, no.
We're? Is it u can't find it vidio is so short and I can hear where I can find this compendiam
johnnygizmo.gumroad.com/l/tonex_midi_compendium
I tried the ampless way and it didn't work out for me. I had the UA Marshall pedal and the Line 6 Power cab. Never really sounded very good at all. Sold them all.
@@sricabla yeah man, you gotta find what works for you! There’s more than one way to do it!
Another option is to add IR of a good microphone that captured an acoustic guitar. You can use it even without a preamp model. Check Worship tutorials for free IR captures for the acoustics.
@@andriiantonenko5790 yeah, totally. I should try that.
I’ve been trying to find a way to use the Ampero Control for a long time, and this is perfect. Thanks!
I think it has a lot of potential for as inexpensive as it is.
Excellent, very helpful. Thanks!
You're very welcome!
Great video! What midi device were you using?
@@leewarren that is the Hotone Ampero Control. You can get it for under $100USD.
So helpful! Thanks a lot! I will add a link to your channel im my next video.
@@galtonestudio thanks so much! I’m just trying to get off the ground!
Thanks for doing this. I’m looking for a way to get at the global settings via midi, in particular the MAIN VOL - would be handy as a vol boost when needed across all presets. Any thoughts on that?
I don't know why they chose to not implement this. There must be some design choice that they made early on the prohibits this from working, otherwise why not expose that setting via MIDI? Model volume or gain would probably be you next best bets.
@@JohnnyMatthewsMusic agreed. Unfortunately, I usually end up tweaking model gain and vol at different levels on a preset by preset basis to balance the output. Having the global MAIN VOL exposed would make for an easy and consistent solo boost (or whatever) across all presets. Appreciate your reply and the work you put in on the compendium.
Is there any reason to go ampless if you are just a home player? It seems like everything is going in the ampless direction but it doesn't seem to make sense for the non-gigging player. I did a little research and it seems like somewhere around 90% of guitar players never play a gig. Why so much emphasis on ampless rigs? How do you listen to yourself when practicing? I understand the options 1) use powered monitors/FRFR speaker 2) use a separate power amp and traditional cab 3) plug into the effects loop of a real amp. Do any of these options sound better than just buying a traditional amp or katana type amp? On ampless product videos we almost always hear a direct recorded version of the sounds, not a mic'd speaker of some sort. Can you shed some light on this issue? Should a home player just ignore all this ampless stuff? FYI I have a Roland Blues Cube and a few pedals but would like to try something different. I'm intrigued by the ampless stuff but am leaning towards a Tone King Gremlin( 5 watt tube amp) or a Fender Tonemaster.
@@tomcarmody5471 that’s a great question. There are definitely reasons to go ampless. But just playing through an amp is still great. I’d say for the home player, if you have an amp that makes you happy, play it! One thing that is cool about capture tech is that it lets you try different amps to see how they sound. Especially ones that you would never have the opportunity to try. One thing I didn’t mention was using a full range full response (FRFR)cabinet to turn an ampless setup into an amp. I think in the end, play what brings you joy. If you are playing a Marshall stack in your bedroom, and you love it, then keep it up! If you love to experiment with every new pedal, but no one ever hears a note, do it!
As a home player myself, I use my traditional amps with a load box into the computer via an audio interface. This gives me the ability to try different IRs, while still using my pedalboard. Of course, 90% of the time I use a Kemper, which is awesome.
@@cmbdds I am truly stuck on deciding on a direction for an "amp" so I would really appreciate your feedback. This is what I am struggling to understand. How are you listening to yourself when you use your Kemper? You spent a lot of money on a top modeler, pedals, interface etc, then listen to yourself through what, studio monitors? I don't have monitors but I would be surprised if they sound better than something with a 12" speaker like a Boss Katana. If you just play at home and want to try a bunch of amps, why not a Spark, especially if you are listening through studio monitors anyway? I occasionally record myself just to mark my progress but a mic'd amp does good enough for that.
@@tomcarmody5471 I have a Spark, but it can't compare to the Kemper. There are thousands of profiles available, and if you get them from a reputable source, they are virtually indistinguishable from a real amp. I have both my JBL monitors and my headphones connected to my Focusrite interface.
@@cmbdds Thanks. One last question. I've always had a 12" cab with a pretty good speaker. How do monitors compare to a real cab? I assume you are happy with them since you have a very nice set up. Maybe I should give them a try. I play at pretty low volume so maybe there isn't as much difference as I would think.
great explained - thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Ok, I'll keep my Boss switcher then.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're welcome :)
Thanks Johnny, the compendium is very useful, have subscribed
You're welcome! Glad you found it helpful.
I've been guessing that's how they will implement tap in time - that it will be by connecting a momentary pedal to the expression pedal input. That pretty much works for me. I play keys and guitar in a cover band, and my keyboard holds my setlist. I set my keyboard patches to transmit midi program changes to the Tonex to select the first patch I need for a song and if there's a need to switch to another patch, I use one of the other neighbor patches on the Tonex.
Works with Tonex One?
@@RomeoPrado i’ve seen some videos where people are figuring out ways to control the toneX one with a midi device, however, it seems a little more convoluted than the full pedal.
Hi! Is there a gap in sound when changing presets using midi? If there is.. is it enough that you wouldn’t want to use this when playing live?
Good question. So far I've not noticed a problem, but then again I don't generally change full presets in the middle of a note that I'm holding. Perhaps I should make a video and try some stuff out.
Subbed!!! Thank you
You're very welcome! I hope it's helpful! I'll let everyone know when it is updated for the new FX release.
Tonex one no midi ?
I don’t have a Tonex One. So I’ve not been able to do any tests. But from what I understand, not directly.
Yeh man that's pretty cool , do you have the schematic of how you wired it to the Arduino, i was thinking of something similar with a push button momentary led switch that when pressed would either engage or disingage the cab block and would light up when engaged. Also could those leds be buttons to turn on off effects etc or is that too complicated. I was looking at trying a diy Arduino footswitch with leds but found it too difficult to work out.
It's not perfect, but check here: imgur.com/a/lwLKzZM Arduino source code is here: github.com/johnnygizmo/midi_lights/blob/main/midi_lights.ino
What am I missing ? I have Tonex standalone running and there are no midi configurations at all in the Settings. If I click on the presets and pedals, I expect to see a button for assigning CC or PC etc., but no. Was hoping this download was shedding light on that part. Not having midi is a showstopper for me. That said, I see you put the work in - thank you
@@TheBukester the TONEX doesn’t send any MIDI, but receives it. I use the HOTONE Ampero Control to send it commands. It’s under $100 which is nice.
@@JohnnyMatthewsMusic Not true. The Tonex pedal will output the MIDI PC equivalent to whatever you select on the same channel the pedal is set to. Ex: If your Tonex pedal is on MIDI Channel 7 and you select program 1B, the pedal will output MIDI PC message 4 on Channel 7. I also use the Hotone Control and agree it is a great value. Thanks for the cheat sheet! Also, you will be updating the Compendium with the new MIDI messages relevant to the upcoming 1.8 w/FX release?
@@TheFrozenDesert Thanks for the clarification. Yes, it generates MIDI messages from it's own controls, but you cannot change the TONEX buttons to send Custom midi, like on the HOTONE. So you cannot assign button 1 on the tonex to do something other than what it is programmed to do. Also yes. The compendium will be updated as soon I get the new info!
Subscribed i dunno if ill get round to using it ive not tried midi yet but the more tonex help tge better i love tonex pedal but the software side isn't as good as someone like line 6
Nice job!! I'm subscribe right now, thanks
Thanks for the sub! Hope the file is helpful!
So I just need the midi control and the tonex? No need my phone with Bluetooth connected?
@@Allann882 you will need a 5 pin MIDI cable to go from the controller to the TONEX. But once you have programmed the control with your phone and saved it back to the pedal, you don’t need your phone to use it.
Great video, thank you so much!
I'm glad you found it helpful! 😊
This was very well done. You covered the basics of MIDI in a clear and concise way, and you didn't go too fast.
@@steveliberty thank you. 😊
Hi, nice vid. Did you try it with a single ext ctrl pedal? I cannot though seem to find a way to use correctly the ext ctrl single pedal for another option. It seems that whenever the pedal is in state A (ON) all other 4 midi buttons work (for example for MIDI PC preset change). If I press the pedal again (OFF), all buttons seem to be blocked. Tried mono/stereo cable connection, all single switch modes, nothing. The idea was to use it as an fx on/off but it does not seem to work. Any ideas, experience on this? (using a Laney single switch)
I’ve not, but I will give it a try. Is your switch latching or momentary? If it is latching I could see why it would mess things up, because when it is ‘on’ the control would think you are just holding down a button. Either way, I’ll give it a shot and get back to you!
@@JohnnyMatthewsMusic nice one, please do, bocz I can't seem to solve it. Btw I'm using the Laney FS1-MINI but I tried also with a generic switch. Thanks
I just tried it with the BOSS FS-5U and it worked. I looked up the Laney switch and it does seem like it is a latching switch which means it is an on/off switch, rather than just on while you hold it down.
@@JohnnyMatthewsMusic Thank you, I see. I use it with no issues with my tonex pedal as an ext control but it seems the ampero needs an Unlatched Footswitch then. Oh well, that wasn't what I hoped for. In any case, thanks for your time man!
Glad to help a little! Thanks for watching!
Should I use all 6 strings
I'd say play things like you normally play, so you can hear what it sounds like with each capture.
How do you setup that midi controller to do that? Maybe the effects can be controlled like that too? Im looking to do something similar. Thanks!
@@larrosa5897 that’s gonna be my next video, stay tuned!
Really cool man, congrats! Did you make it yourself? Impressive! very usefull!
Yeah, this was from scratch with an Arduino Uno. There is a grounding issue I'm still working out, but that's probably because I have the soldering skills of a 3 year old.
With the complexity of programming the mix vol, I’d just put a volume pedal before the Tonex. Will have to wait until we get the update though. Want to know if a two button switch can be used for both tap and maybe turning on/off an fx
If they follow the current midi design of the reverb block then toggling fx will be pretty easy. I got an ampero stomp expression pedal. The volume idea is like 95% effective. There seems to be a little bit of glitch us, especially at the bottom of the sweep. Since I mainly play my TONEX with a cleaner tone and front it with an overdrive pedal I might just use the Ampero press as a regular volume in front of it
I'm guessing this is only for the OG pedal, not the TX1
@@JimmyKay1976 yeah, unless there is a way to midi control the TX1 😞
@@JohnnyMatthewsMusic That's my main regret about buying the TX1. But I learned hot to use it with the HX Stomp so it's pretty balanced. May sell the Stomp and just get the OG pedal. I just hope IK let's us use pedals of our choice with amps on ToneX someday
Why is there reverb on the section it was off?
Just showing the base tone with no pedal.
