    I have a 100 year old barn built with 8x 8 beams. The building had a fire about 20 years ago and that only made the beams harder. They have about 1/4 in deep char, but underneath beautiful beams. Looking for someone who might be interested in the beams

    As a carpenter I don't understand this. The wood is now petrified and has no bend or give. Without reflexion the wood will just crack and break. You can't nail it without breaking it. Screwing would be double duty pre-drilling everything... How can you even sell it...except for awesome fire wood.

    • @TheDenBarnwood
      @TheDenBarnwood Месяц назад

      In extreme cases the wood is exactly as you describe. Not very easy to woodwork with to say the least. However, this is the extreme and thankfully the majority is top quality, tight grained, with perfect moisture content for woodworking projects.

    You would have loved to salvage an old corn crib we had in Iowa. It was originally used to store ear corn, which is considerably lighter than shelled corn. Dad reinforced it with home sawed oak lumber. He removed the slats on the outside and replaced them with 1 1/2 ship lap. Nailed 2x12s alongside the beams in the basement to reinforce them. Trussed the oats bins upstairs. We would fill half of the driveway with corn too, had a feed grinding setup in the other half. Always raised hogs in the basement. Chock full it would hold 10,000 bushels

    I want to do a feature wall in my den. I have to get rid of a closet door, drywall and paint. My question is - can I use liquid nail to fasten the 3/8 barnwood to a plaster wall? The surface area is approximately 8 foot by 9 foot. Thank you and great video!

    I'm using reclaimed wood from the old barns in the back of my 224-year-old farmhouse reno. So far, we've put 1 beam vertical in the kitchen as a support, and planks are being prepped for floors and trim. All it's costing me is time, labor, and cleaning/sanding materials.

    How would you go about attaching the wood to the wall if you didn't want to make it permanent. My idea is to glue the boards together and prop the whole thing up and just secure the corners. I'm open to alternative methods anyone thinks of.

    • @TheDenBarnwood
      @TheDenBarnwood 6 месяцев назад

      Just an idea but we have made a temporary wall out of 2x2 and fastened that to the existing wall sparingly. Then attached the beautiful barnwood to it!

    My Grandfather built one of these in the early 60's, not nearly as old as this one, in northern Iowa. It was still in great condition but too small for modern grain yields. It was demolished around 2020 and I wish I could have salvaged some of the lumber. Great to see you could and did with this one.

    Thanks for all the useful info! In the 80's my dad tore down a barn from the 1880's and used them in our home remodel. They were exposed in the home they lived in for 45 years and raised all 4 of us kids. Dad's gone, mom's in an old folkshome. But i just used his stihl 031av to get 6 8-10' sections out of the rubble. I'll definitely be referring back to this vid

    So incredibly helpful thank you so much. I found a landowner/they found me and we are both unsure of the true value and have not quite yet made an agreement. I really like Your approach and I’d like to know your thoughts on what a good deal looks like for mutual benefit? myself/barn owner/your industry. I am in renovations but This would be my first barn salvage/demo. Being that both parties are unsure of the true value I was thinking to propose minimal labour costs paid by owner and some kind of shared materials and full transparency. Also I was impressed before leaning from the comments your in Manitoba. I’m in Alberta but still always a kid from wpg. 🦩

    Have you ever done a hollow mantle with a live edge? How did (or would) you adjust the build of the box for the live edge? Thxs

    • @TheDenBarnwood

      Great question, we focus on barnwood as live edge is a little out of our realm. However, it might be worthwhile considering a solid live edge mantle. Good luck with your project!

    Hi! I’ve been watching your videos - thank you! I am wondering if you have ever used (1) boracare - I don’t have a dry kiln option to kill bugs and (2) wood hardner to deal with soft wood areas? If so…. How long to I need to let each product dry between use of each and how long before sealing? Thanks!

    • @TheDenBarnwood
      @TheDenBarnwood 8 месяцев назад

      Hey! Welcome to The Den. We are not familiar with the product named Boracare but it is a good practise to go the extra mile ensuring pest free wood. The chances of the wood being infested is rare but not impossible. Soft spots in wood should either be ground down to sold wood with use of a wire wheel or cut out of the project completely. The extra cost of product such as wood hardner can be reduced greatly by careful project wood selection. If you do use a hardner then refer to the instructions as your starting point. Maybe even try a test piece for real time results.

    Love the video and your work. Plus you’re pretty entertaining. QUESTION: Does the Kincade hardware allow you to store the ladder in the vertical position when not in use and then fold it out to create the angle when you want to use it? My situation is unique in that the ladder will be used to go into a secret room behind some bookshelves. This all takes place in the middle landing of a stairway. So the ladder will only be about 5 feet tall. The landing isn’t huge so I’d like to be able to store the ladder flat when not in use. Again. Enjoyed your video.

    • @TheDenBarnwood
      @TheDenBarnwood 8 месяцев назад

      Welcome to The Den, What an interesting project you have going on over there. Sounds like you should be making some videos 😉. To answer your question, the ladder does not store in the vertical position. Have you considered a ladder that remains vertical on the book shelf?
