DIY reloading bench- purpose built
Просмотров 7 тыс.8 лет назад
This is a quick overview of my reloading station that I built. It was custom made for use, height, storage and work space. Since I use the batch reloading process, it's a VERY efficient design and works well for us. YMMV.
Why I reload my own ammo

The first video in a series on reloading. In this video, I discuss why we reload ammo, how to do it cost-effectively and the accuracy potential you can get from reloading your own ammo.
How to build a Little Dandy nomad twig stove
Просмотров 7889 лет назад
Build a wood/twig stove for lightweight backpacking trips or to keep on hand during an emergency. No fuel to carry, pick it up as you go! Store it in a quart size Ziploc bag to keep your other gear clean. You can download the PDF with templates at: nimblewillnomad.com/little-dandy-stove/ I've carried one of these for a few years and it works tremendously well. Make a few to give to like-minded ...
Build of a DBJ 1 antenna
Просмотров 25 тыс.10 лет назад
Step-by-step build of a DBJ-1 antenna for the 2 meter and 70 cm ham bands. This can be done in about an hour (or two) for approx $15. This is a great homebrew/DIY project with AMAZING results. If you're looking for a high performance antenna for a few bucks... this is the one to try! Great for AmRRON net operators and relayers, especially when mounted high.
Long Term portable water storage with Aquatainer and Aquamira
Просмотров 22010 лет назад
A way to ensure part of your long-term water storage is portable if you NEED to evacuate (forced displacement, evacuation orders, structural damage, etc). Always consider your preparedness plans for portability first... you can use portable gear in your static location, but it's almost impossible to move static gear, like a 55 gallon drum, if you need to evac. This makes a great augmentation TO...
How to attach ILBE assault pack to ILBE Main Pack
Просмотров 13 тыс.10 лет назад
Quick video on how to attach the USMC ILBE 3-day assault pack to the ILBE main pack. Note: Gen 1 (black) and Gen 2 (tan) buckles on the shoulder straps will NOT mate, however you can still strap the assault pack to the main pack with the 3 strap flap on the main pack.
we dont have them i have to use toilet paper ,
5gallon Home Depot bucket. Dawn, vinegar and boiling water. Combine ingredients, add brass. Rotate wrist in a rapid circular motion to and fro. Rinse in cold water. 200 degree oven for 15 minutes. Prime, charge, bullet, crimp FIRE repeat steps 1-Gunshot
Switch to wet tumbling. To get fresh clean media, just turn on the household water faucet for a fresh supply !
Your tumbler cover looked clean! I hate the dust i get with my walnut media. Do the dryer sheets cut down the dust?
Dry tumbling isn’t necessary for safe and efficient reloading, but if you want shiny brass go ahead. That said tumbling media is bird cage bedding. Ground walnut shells. Or ground dried corn cobs. Honestly cheap kitty litter is similar size and would last as long too and cut the dirt and dull in far less time. Why do you want to clean it? What are you trying to clean out of it? Is this about the dust from some of the walnut or corn cob getting pulverized into dust? I’m a little lost on what your motivation is and why it matters to you. I rinsed really dirty brass (range pick ups full of mud) in lacquer thinner for years before I got a tumbler at all. Loaded untold thousands of rounds of ammunition with no mechanical agitation or tumbling. I would shake the paint can of lacquer thinner and brass a little to move the thinner through it all but then would reuse the thinner until it was just awful.
I also have been using dryer sheets for about 20 years. Keep a supply of used sheets beside the tumbler. My media is also very old and beginning to show its age, but still cleans the brass very well even though it is darker. I have a second container available and add from it as I lose some media occasionally. Keep it going. This also works with the corncob media.
Great video and great information
Moisten the dryer sheets with paint thinner or charcoal starter fuild--they should be damp, not saturated. The y will clean the media very effectively.
Thanks great tip
I can’t take it. Quit smacking. Smacking and UN are verbal expressions that you don’t know what to say and are trying to make up what to say next! Tumbling media is bird cage litter! You telling me petco is out of ground walnut hulls for all their bird owning customers?
I've done the dryer sheet thing to reduce dust, but a better method IMO is simply to run the tumbler outside with the cover off...seems to get rid of most of the dust.
I've been wondering about that. I was thinking of putting a box fan in my shop window pointing outside and have the tumbler on my workbench with top off and the fan sucking all the fine dust out the window.
I've been using dryer sheets for 20 years. Once through the dryer is quite enough. I never use a full sheet. I rip them into quarters and put 2 pieces in each load. I only use a solar dryer (clothes line) so I have to beg my daughter and girl friend to save the sheets for me. When I don't have dryer sheets I use pieces of scrap flannel that I make from old flannel sheets. If you buy your walnut media at a welding supply store you'll get a lifetime supply in one 50lb bag for about the cost of buying a small Jug's worth at the local gun shop. I treat my walnut with NU Finish polish and odorless mineral spirits every dozen batches of brass. You have to let it run until the media is dry before adding brass though or it will set like concrete inside empty cases. I get nice shiny brass in about 90 minutes... an extra hour if it is tarnished range brass. Over time the media loses it's size and course texture making it slower to clean and small enough to block up flash holes.
Thanks for sharing. Many videos regarding dry tumbling reference using a dryer sheet but never explain why and also don't mention cutting it into strips so it can work its way throughout the bowl easily. After adding the dryer sheet I saw it quickly becomes black extending the life of your tumbling media.
One question. Why didn't you shoot much during the lockdown? That's when i started reloading because of shortages and i had more ammo than I've ever had. I live rural and absolutely drove my neighbors mad. 100-200 12g various loads of buckshot, slugs and birdshot or whatever i felt like loading. This time around im setting up for rifle and pistol. Btw thanks for your innovative video. Even if it's not your idea thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the question! I was working an insane amount of hours during that time, many of the shelves were empty of reloading supplies and nobody was running training classes or organized fun shoots. We did get out to shoot about one a month, but there were far fewer trips than an average year. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, hope it helps
@@Barracuda6USA I'm in Washington where the libtard Gov inslee shut down fishing because covid. I went fishing and called the warden on myself who eventually showed up and told me I couldn't fish on the river. I was the only person for miles and I argued the point to no avail. He eventually told me he'd give me a ticket if I didn't stop fishing. I asked if inslee had shut down target shooting and he said he didn't think so. He shook his head and drove away as I set up targets.
I heard a variation on this from the "6.5 guys" internet site a few years ago. i like yours better.
Who'da thunk it! Thanks, I'll try this.
it would be nice to know why you're using s dryer sheet to begin with...
the dryer sheet is collecting dirt and grim off the brass and media.
Going to try this. Thanks
Great video. thanks; however the method is far too complicated either just use the flap or do as the Brits do and just "top Flap" the patrol pack
Great instructive and demonstration video. Thank you!
I'm having trouble finding the 300 ohm twin lead cable. What is a good source?
Thank yo for the video!
It is possible to have the measurements in centimeters instead of in inches the converter does not give me precise thanks so much
Google inches to centimeters. It will do the converting. You’re welcome.
Wow. Excellent organization!
Is that just a poncho liner you have strapped to the side of the assault pack?
It's a poncho snapped together with the poncho liner inside. We used to call it a ranger roll, it acts as an improvised sleeping bag.
Hi, I like your very detailed video. What did you use for the brass containers? They look like a great option. The containers just above the ammo cans.... Thanks!
1Adam12Dad they are plastic coffee cans. I use a different color one for dirty brass and the other 3 in the same colors for the different stages of brass work.
Link to the stove plans has been fixed.
Did anyone have a copy of his plans for this stove so his idea could live on?
nimblewillnomad.com/little-dandy-stove/
Excellent presentation clean and logical. A parts list would be good.
Thanks for the video. Shouldnt the decoupling stub be shorted only on the top side as shown in the instructions? Thanks again!
Darren did you get a reply? I don't want to start making mine until I know.
can I get on the plane with my ilbe pack ?
Excellent video - thank you for taking the time to make it and post it here. I had made this antenna previously (from the QST article) by doing just as you demonstrated in this video. With careful attention to the dimensions, my SWR reading on my MFJ antenna analyzer was a minimum of 1.2 at 146 MHz and maximum 1.7 at 144 and 148 MHz with no "tweaking". I was impressed. My analyzer does not measure above 170 MHz so I can't tell what the SWR is in the UHF region. At least for 2 meters, I can vouch for the accuracy of both Ed Fong's article as well as the construction technique shown in your video. Thanks again.
Thanks, simple and straightforward instructions and very helpful.
On the case prep center that you have what kind of case trimmer is that? Great video
jjs811, it's the Lee case trimmer with an adapter as the base. I use the lock stud with a handle to hold the brass. I found it on ebay for around $15 a while ago. Search "lee rcbs adapter" and it should pop up
Thanks for the reply. It looked like a nice setup.
I'll be covering that in the batch processing video
Great!! I'm looking into it and it looks like a really good add on.
You said you use the lock stud to hold the brass and I came across a video today that might be better. The title is Lee case trimmer for .223 made easier. It could be genius idk yet. But thought you could take a look and let us know when you make your batch video.
Looking good. 👍
How do attached the hydration pack? Great video. Thanks
"Let me count the ways" comes to mind. There really isn't "a way" unless a unit adopts gear setup SOP's. Since there's at least 3 different models of hydration packs, you'll be limited only by your imagination and hose length. If you have the really long hose, you can just leave the bladder inside the assault pack sleeve and route the hose over your shoulder (since the main pack gets dumped and the assault pack goes with typically). If you have a shorter hose, you can attach it under the lid of the main pack, use carbiners/grimlocs to attach it to the webbing on one side, if you have a radio pouch, it can ride in there. Quite literally, the sky is the limit. Hope that helps!
I tried making this antenna twice. The first wouldn't tune to less than 2:1. The second wouldn't tune to less than 50:1. I measured and remeasured. Does anyone know what I could be doing wrong?
KNOW? There's no possible way anyone could tell you absolutely what is wrong; given that we can't possibly know all the variables that might be causing your antenna to be way out of whack. For example, we don't know how you soldered the connections (up the line or facing down the line, it has a small effect), we don't know if you used the exact same materials or if you used flux to clean connections or just soldered them 'cold'. We don't know where you've mounted the antenna (enviroment might be an issue if there's metal too close) or if you're even testing the antenna vertically or horizontally (some people have actually blamed antenna tuning as the problem while laying an antenna on the GROUND while they test it). This video, assumes that the instructions downloaded automatically end up with a tuned antenna. Such is NOT the case. It even says so on the webpage...the measurements are simply a starting point. You'll have to experiment, tweek and rebuild to get the turn correct. Also depends on WHERE in a band you're expecting to 'tune' to, it's impossible to tune so widely that EVERY freq. is 1:1.
Hi guys, I was thinking about building one too, but changed my mind at the last minutes. I went over his house and end up bought two of them. I got a DBJ-2 and a new Tri-band. He even askd me to stay over for lunch with his family, since he found out I drove over 140 miles (round trips) just to get the antenna. Great man and very nice family.
Great story, bro )
You're correct, it was not metered at the end of the video. I put this up after we built 6 of them over the course of the summer for a field day event in the fall. They were all metered and measured between 1.2:1 and 1.5:1, the farthest "out of whack" being from our youngest builder. YMMV, but they seem to be pretty spot on right off the bench with the newer dimensions Ed published.
I love this bag. Got everything except the camel back.
I have a generation 1 pack that I picked up but it came with tan buckles that look like the gen 2 so I have no idea which assault pack to get. any chance u could take a close up pic of your buckles
You may have hit the jackpot with your main pack. There was a production run before the Gen 2 style came out that had the newer buckles installed. I will post a few pics of the buckles on a tape measure... if I can figure out how :/
Thanks I appreciate it
i just bought the same pack 8 yrs later at the Goodwill. Black but with brown buckles.
Thanks for the tip I was doing it wrong.
The main pack was an eBay score. The assault pack was given to me by a friend, it was his issued pack (he used the desert one FAR more than this one). There are some good resellers out there, you just need to really get a good item description. Anything that is marked "DRMO" is scrap fabric, stay away from those "deals" as they are unserviceable. Even if it arrives dirty, a little TLC with a soft bristle brush (or a trip to the laundromat for a heavy duty washing machine) and non-bleach detergent (I use Dr. Bronners soap for almost everything) will clean them right up. The assault pack in the video was packed with California dirt and beach sand. A little scrub session and two trips through the big washer and it looked brand new, sans the torn strap.
Where did you get your pack and assault pack. I bought one and returned it due to its awful condition. Yours looks like it is in great condition. Love to have one in that condition.
