Thank you! I have a 12 year old hydrangea that desperately needs trimmed but I've been scared to cut it in fear it won't bloom. I cut it back the wrong way before and it didn't bloom for a whole year. This was very helpful and I am much more confident in doing it now!
Thank u! That was the most clearest form of explanation I’ve seen so far!
What if the bloom beads are on top, on the tip of all of the stalks? I can't trim?
This is one of the best videos. Very well explained. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Very nice explanation and demonstration! (Though I do encourage you to keep your birdbath clean and with fresh water if you want to keep your birds happy and healthy...)
What would happen if you went down to the second or third bloom on an old wood stalk? Would it still flower?
I love your tattoo! ❤
Best video I have seen on pruning a Hydrangea. Thank You so very much!!!!
Great video direct and clear instruction Which hydrangea get pruned in the fall ?
I loved watching this friendly, no-nonsense instructional. Happy Gardening and thanks!
Very informative, helpful and clear. Thank you!
Very helpful and practical advice.
Excellent demonstration! Thank you.
Great video! I have some hydrangeas that are way too large and are encroaching on the house. Do you have any suggestions for that? Can you over prune a hydrangea?
Hi, Lynne! You could take them back as far as their first string bud on each stalk. You could also try cutting them back by half this year as a test. You just want to make sure you’re always cutting above a strong bud so the plant still has active growth points. You might sacrifice a few blooms this year, but it will help keep the size in check.
Thanks bunches for your clip. I now know what to do great help ❤
This was so helpful! Clear and concise, no fluff at all! Thanks so much :)
You ave beautiful roses but you need to prune the roses to create an airflow.
Which roses were you referring to? I have a couple of knockout roses (those are the reddish ones) and those don’t require any pruning. The yellow rose actually gets a hard prune in the spring and a haircut at least once throughout the summer because it’s such a prolific grower.
Thank you so much! Previously I watched few other videos on the subject, and I was more confused about the pruning than when I started. We also have a HUGE hydrangea which was there when we bought the house. I don't think it was pruned for a long time and I want to give her a facelift without destroying it. After I watched your video, I am pretty confident that I can do it> Thanks again for the clear straight forward explanation about how to practically do it. May God bless you & happy gardening!
my hydrangesa is going on 4 years, it blossom the 2nd year, maybe 2 on the 3rd year. ive questioned if getting to much sun, and if it needs to be moved. so i don't have any left over blooms. I live in michigan, and just checking this week, i have new growth on all the "old wood" how do i determine this adventure. and would you suggest moving, it getting about 8 hours sun. thank you. most helpful video
Do you prune them? If so how much are you cutting back? Do you know what kind of hydrangea it is? I’m wondering if it might be one that grows on new growth and could use a harder prune than what I did here. Where are you located? Here in the southern US, our hydrangeas like a little protection. This one gets maybe 4 hours of direct sunlight and does fine.
I did 2 springs ago, and i didn't get ANY blossoms. all i remember its a Japanese one, it doesn't get very big. sorry. I attempted to have info by plant but of course grew legs and walked away. The plant is about 3 x 3 at this point, and looking at tips, does have green attempting to bud. Thank you for your reply.
Hmm, if it has bloom tips, it seems like it should be happy. Before you move it, maybe text your soil and see if there are any deficiencies you might be able to correct. If not, then it couldn’t hurt to move it. Sometimes plants just don’t like a spot even if it seems like they should. Just make sure you get as much of the roots as you can and keep it well watered until it can root in again.
Just what I needed to know. Suggestion - would be to show how your plant looked after the deep pruning. Also, I have a problem with spotted leaves and plant turning brown.
Any tips on an old wood hydrangea that is over taking the sidewalk at the end of summer? Husband wants it to be cut back so it doesn’t overgrow every year.
Hi, Melissa! I would wait until it goes dormant and give it a light prune in late fall/early winter just to get it out of your way. Then, when it starts to bud in spring, you can cut it back farther if you want. I wouldn’t go deeper than half the size in the spring (cutting it back by a third would be safest). Just cut it above a set of buds and you’ll be good to go.
Just what I needed, I was wondering how to prune my hydrangeas and your clip was just the thing. Your delivery was perfect, no waving of arms, no shouting, no talking around the subject, a clear and to-the-point instruction. Can't wait to get outside and start clipping ! thanks a lot.
Thank you for watching! I’m so glad you found it helpful 😊
My thoughts exactly!!!
My best friend, that's a great video. I will always cheer for you in Korea I'm looking forward to a great video. Have a nice day.
Question: my hydrangeas have a mix of deadblooms from last year and new growth + full blooms from this year, should I prune the dead blooms or wait to prune them all next year? 🤔
Is there new growth on the dead stalks? If not, it should be fine to prune them out. If the old bloom stalks have new growth on them, I would just deadhead the old blooms to tidy up the plant and do a more in depth prune next spring. Thanks for watching and good luck!
@@plantsandprosecco7347 Yea there's no new growth on them. Alright thank you so much! :)
Great video!!! I just started gardening this spring and have found it is quite overwhelming at times. I love the zoning idea!!! That will help make it so much more manageable. I do have a question, I find that I’m constantly removing weeds from the same areas and of course I pull out the roots and all when I do weed, will it eventually get to where the weeds will go away or is this just one of the downsides of gardening? I even used the weed fabric and mulch but they seem to grow through that 😢. Does it eventually get easier I guess is my question lol. Great video I love that you are a more realistic gardener your gardens are beautiful and goal material! Everyone I follow seems to have these pristine garden beds with no weeds and perfect growth and while it was goal material it was also kind of disheartening as I felt that is how a garden had to look to be successful. With yours I see you can have a beautiful garden and weeds happen thank you so much for sharing new subscriber and wish you great success on your channel!!!
Thank you, Jessica! That makes me so glad to hear because I try to keep it real and practical. I have good news and bad news about weeds - the answer is yes and no 😆 Pulling them by the root is excellent, but you also want to pull them before they go to seed. That will help keep the population down as well. It will get better, but you’ll always have a few weeds here and there even if you’re the most proactive gardener on the planet. Those stupid violets I talk about in the video never seem to go away, so I just try to keep on top of them as best I can to keep the population down. Thank you for watching and keep me updated on how the zoning works out for your space!
The speech is not fast nor slow. The info is simple yet, detailed.
Cheers - thank you for watching and your kind words!
I was wondering.... thanks for sharing. Recently I planted a few so it may be a while and this is valuable knowledge.
You made it very easy to understand how to prune this plant. Thank you!
I like your sign! 🥰
I’ve been looking for exactly this video!! Thank you so much!
Good tip. Thanks
What happens if old wood hydrangeas are pruned to the ground? My landscaper cut mine to almost to the ground even though I asked him not to. There are a few leaves growing but I’m afraid the bushes are ruined.
Fertilize it and keep it well watered. You won’t get blooms this year, but if you can keep the roots healthy and unstressed, it may come back for blooms next year.
I'm wondering also
Video so informative, now I know how and from where to prune. Thank you so much.
You’re very welcome - thanks for watching!

Those can be pruned pretty hard. Cut them back to about 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) above the ground. Then remove anything diseased, damaged, or dead from what remains. Happy gardening!
Very helpful. Thanks!
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching.
Excellent video!
Thank you!
