DC Nick Alioti had the perfect game plan for this bowl, and the team executed to near perfection. Colorado's overpowering run game was held to about 50 net yards rushing, and the secondary shut down Colorado's passing game.

My Ducks put on a clinic this game. Bested the Buffs ~ 3 of every 4 plays, both sides of the ball. Then up by a ton in the fourth we let them score. Slowly. Very slowly. Buffs ate up seven minutes during that drive. Oregon's prevent defense gave them everything short, kept them inbounds again and again. Totes clinic.

I wasn’t surprised at all. They (CO)shocked Nebraska. They played great. Big 12 Championship Texas won convincingly their only problem was they beat Texas. They gave Colorado 31 points on turn overs. And still only lost by 2 points or so. This game on Colorado radio the Blow Torch said Oregon wasn’t the same caliber I knew they were wrong

As a CU fan, many of us believed that Oregon should've been playing Miami. Had the BCS picked Oregon, I think most reasonable CU fans would've been fine with it. And that was BEFORE the Fiesta Bowl. Obviously after the bowls, it was inarguable. What we were incensed about, was Nebraska making it. We not only beat them, but won 62-36 (not as close as that indicates),& had the ball inside the 10, with like 2 or 3 minutes left,& kneeled on it. That was the classy thing to do. But us CU fans, who'd watched Nebraska cave our heads in for decades-wanted to score again,& go for 2, to hit 70. Funny thing is, as close as the BCS turned out (closest ever, to that point)-had CU scored that last td, it might have been enough to push CU past Nebraska. Who knows, but in hindsight, it's probably better. Miami would've killed Colorado also. I think CU was better than what they showed at the Fiesta bowl, but Oregon clearly was better. And I think Miami wouldve beat Oregon by double digits also (Miami from 2000-2002 had the most future pros ever,& it's not real close. Future HOFers backing up future HOFers at multiple positions) But I think Oregon was clearly the 2nd best team,& deserved to get their shot, in the Rose Bowl. I knew a couple CU players from that team, & they were very complimentary of Oregon. They said they were by far the best team they played. And remember CU not only beat down Nebraska, but played Texas twice (the 1st time they slaughtered us, we beat them in a competitive Big 12 title game) But they also admitted, they kind of took the Fiesta Bowl, as a reward, or party. The emotion of upsetting Nebraska,& Texas,& then ALMOST making the national title game, by the smallest of margins. And then to have your rival make it, who you just destroyed-I think distracted them from the job at hand. Don't get me wrong, I think Oregon was the better,& more mature team. Both teams at their best, I still think Oregon wins. But it should've been more competitive. Oregon took that game, how CU should have. A chance to prove not only that Nebraska had no business being there, (we already knew that, before the bowls) but that Oregon was the team that should've been there. I don't think any reasonable CU fan, would've had any problem if Oregon had been picked, by the BCS-before the bowls. But when they picked those frauds from Nebraska in, we knew that was bs. CU played a tougher schedule than Oregon, but they only had 1 loss. And CU's 2 losses, were to an above average Fresno at home,& a blowout loss at Texas. So I certainly figured Oregon would get picked. But computers,& the fact that I don't think the BCS was using margin of victory-at all back then-gave us a travesty. I understand you don't want teams running up the score. So a 20 point win, should count the same as a 50 point win. But losing 20-19, on a last second fg, shouldn't count the same as losing by 4 or 5tds. Had CU barely beat Nebraska, I couldve seen the Husker argument. Barely losing on the road, to a team that finished in the top 10, would be no shame. That was their only loss also. But losing 62-36, after tacking on a few late, garbage tds-to make it look closer-that's a much different deal.(not to mention CU couldve easily scored again) And I'm not saying CU took Oregon lightly, or wasn't aware of how prestigious the Fiesta Bowl is. Those CU players told me, they were excited,& knew how good Oregon was,& how prestigious the Fiesta Bowl is. They knew just getting there was a big honor. But I think maybe they were a little immature. And during preparations, I think they were too concerned with Nebraska getting picked,& everyone telling them how they got screwed. It was the same for Oregon, but I think they maturely realized-Nebraska is gonna get killed, (wasn't the Rose Bowl like 34-0 at half?)& if we go out,& punk CU-that'll be all the talking we need. That'll prove we should've been in the Rose bowl,& they emphatically proved their point. I think CU knew it was a big game,& knew Oregon was tough-they didn't overlook them. But they probably didn't focus on the preparation,& details enough. And kinda felt sorry for themselves somewhat. CU looked at the Fiesta Bowl, as a vacation,& reward for winning the Big 12,& having such a great season. Oregon looked at it as a big game,& maybe a reward. But they more so took it as a business trip,& chance to prove a point, against the only other team with a reasonable argument (including Nebraska-lol)-that they should've been in the Rose bowl, other than Oregon. Having said all that, Oregon was a better team than CU. The difference in maturity, focus,& attitude-is what turned it into a blowout. But hey those are important intangibles,& often make the difference between a very good team, vs a great team. Oregon was better, but CU should've been more competitive also. And nobody was beating Miami that season (& really the next season also. They go back 2 back-without that awful, late pass interference in OT vs Ohio St) The number of future pros,& HOFers was amazing, on those Miami teams. I do think Oregon couldve played them much tougher, than CU,& certainly tougher than fraudulent Nebraska. But in the end, I think Miami probably beats Oregon like 34-20, or something similar. But as imperfect as the playoff system still is, (it should be 8 teams-no more or less) it's a far cry from those days, when the BCS would spit out some completely ridiculous rankings, a few times.

There used to be a 1 story shack where the 3 story building is right at the end of the St. John dock. It had stones out front with a couple picnic tables, and there was no gate or building on the dock. My dad was involved in the St. John Pub that was there throughout the 1980s that sold subs, hotdogs, cold beer and mixed tropical drinks to the tourists. I used to go over to St. John and have lunch at The Backyard on some Saturdays, that was practically all traveling by road on that island I did in the years I was there. When I was 12 dad bought me a 13 foot Boston Whaler with a 55hp and besides the other 4 boats he had I used to use it to go to St. John once in a while. A couple times was to Trunk where we visited our schoolmate that lived in the house on the peninsula that you see. She used to travel to St. Thomas to go to school and back every day. My best friend's dad owned the largest dump truck on St. Thomas during the time they were moving the Eastern mountain to off the end of the runway extending it. His driver was dropping a load off the end, lost control and jumped out just in time to see it sink into the end of the runway. Time, resources, etc dictated that they just keep going. So when you land there, you are landing on a dump truck. December 1989 through Jan 1990 I helped put the flat roof on the new airport terminal. White guys who hired me got fired for fist fighting the day before I came down to take the job, and I spent three days doing nothing, with the exception of checking the caps that held down the flat roof that had already been done. I think I counted 173 that weren't fastend. I told the guy who came down from Florida to take over the job, but he didn't seem concerned. I have no idea if it passed inspection. My family of 6 including 2 of my grandparents were scheduled on the American Airlines flight that crashed on the island in 1976 running into a Shell gas station at the end of the short runway. My mom had a dream, and rescheduled us for a week earlier with all the work and changes made for dad's 3 stores to run for 2 weeks. We were at Magens when it crashed. A call went out for the 2nd most rare blood, AB-, which my father had. My dad said he wasn't taking time out from his vacation to donate blood. Read the karma my dad died to on that island 14 years after that crash, in this book with links below. I've probably been on more cruise ships than anyone reading this, yet never been on a cruise. My dad ran a ship chandlery that had a monopoly on selling liquor to the cruise ships in the early '80s, that I used to spend my afternoons after school doing my homework at, that was located at the last building on the Havensite dock (has Senior Frogs painted on its roof). After growing up on the island and starting when I was 17 in late 1986, we used to roam Charlotte Amalie downtown streets at night bar hopping Coconuts, Rosie O'Grady's, The Ritz, Yesterdays, then to the Greenhouse at 10pm for the current live band, when everyone was partying in the islands. Since the bars closed at 2 AM we would go out to steal cars, usually rentals, and race across the island, afterward sometimes stripping them for parts. I've floored it in a brand new 1987 Accord LXi from the Fort all the way to Frenchtown one night easily doing 100mph, which was not unusual to do with stolen cars but sometimes done even with the ones we sort of cared about. I hold the record for most boats stolen in one night while alone; three - I took them to a birthday party. Would you like to read about real modern pirates based out of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands taking place in the end of the cocaine fueled 80s?
