    Great video, thanks. The tuning pins seem to be rather large though. Why did you decide not to replace the wrest plank?

    • @sarbachpiano
      @sarbachpiano 3 дня назад

      Thank you. Yes the new tuning pins are 7,5 x 56 so the second largest size. they all hold very strong (almost too strong :-)) and the wrestplank had no issues at all. So why not keep it?

    • @rouhyito
      @rouhyito 3 дня назад

      @@sarbachpiano I suppose that the argument in favour of replacing the wrestplank is that it will inevitably need replacing in the not-so-distant future (perhaps in less than 20 years given that the pins are already at the second largest size) and that it would have been much easier to replace it while you were doing the other restoration work than later on. I guess that the argument against replacing them would be the cost of doing so versus the value that this would add to the current sale price. Similar cost/benefit considerations presumably apply to re-facing versus replacing the hammers.

    • @rouhyito
      @rouhyito 3 дня назад

      @@sarbachpiano Also, I wasn't sure what you meant by the text in the video ("original sound"). Is this a recording of the piano before or after restoration? There's a lot of 'tubbiness' in the tenor>bass, e.g. the B flat and E flat from 5:12

    I am following your work; greetings from Georgia. My Grotrian-Steinweg piano was manufactured in 1886 (it is already 138 years old). It is an upright piano (not a grand piano). Currently, it is tuned to 404 Hz, and I do not interfere with its authenticity to avoid losing it. However, I am wondering if it would be possible to raise the tuning to 432-440 Hz (the strings are in good condition, and the tuning pins, at first glance, still have some reserve). Thank you, and I wish you all the best.

    The Blüthner was shrill in the upper registers and wasn't quite in tune - just a bit flat. It was very obvious that it was not tuned using the tuner's discriminating ear in the last few measures when a first and a third were played together by the right hand. It sounded like it was tuned using an electrical tuning machine and not adjusted in the thirds and fifths. The bass had little presence - it was just a low note. The Bösendorfer was just a bit out of tune in the upper registers but not nearly as bad as the Blüthner. The Bösendorfer's upper notes were almost bell-like and not uncomfortably shrill. The bass had a nice resonant presence. The first and third notes near the end matched the mood of the piece - somber but in tune and not jangly. The Blüthner was 6'3". The Bösendorfer was 6'7" so size alone shouldn't make much difference. The quality and resonance of the sound board has to be the deciding factor in choosing which piano to purchase. It appeared that the mics were placed in just about the same place on each piano. The Bösendorfer would get my vote for the better sounding piano in this "contest." I would have liked to hear a piece that could have pressed the acoustics and resonance of the sound board as well as the lower end to their limits - a piece that was very difficult. Moving the mics off of the sound board and further out to where the "audience" would be would have displayed each piano's sound better.

    Being made to be loud while forgetting to make it play beautiful is something that has been lost from the modern piano industry thanks to gatekeepers telling people who want different what piano they want and throwing away period instruments like they mean nothing. The modern piano ruins the kind of music I write but these period instruments don't even though this piano is much more modern than the one I write for which has 77 keys, 2 strings per note and the strings don't cross.

    These pianos from the golden age are gone as well as the great pianists of the past. Nothing but cookie punched performances today by speed freaks. No more soul . We’ve lost the art of music making. I’m not impressed by half dressed Asians playing faster than the speed of light

  • @DeadHorse666
    @DeadHorse666 3 месяца назад

    These kinds of pianos sound so magical, you can't get a sound this beautiful and balanced out of an overstrung piano while the modern piano was just an option at the time where you could choose a piano that sounds vastly different from another and not the only piano you could get as it is today where if you write music that doesn't suit the modern piano, you have to hunt down a period instrument or build one yourself.

  • @topturretgunner
    @topturretgunner 3 месяца назад

    A Blüthner with the Aloquot tuning system is a wondrous piano to hear. Especially the older versions. You won’t find contemporary woods with the grain patterns used in the older hand built German pianos and something magical takes place with the resonance produced by the well seasoned (aged) soundboard of those pianos if they are well cared for. There truly is something magical in the character, resonance, warmth and tonality of an older Blüthner piano that Kawai, Steinway and Yamaha will never reproduce. It’s very easy when your ear learns these things to understand why Claude Debussy preferred the warmth and character of that piano to the hard, bright sometimes cold or crystalline sound of other manufacturers.
