Walked it a month ago as weren't sure about bikes. Only tricky bits with bikes is western side gate and first slip 100m in after that it is plain sailing. If using ebikes maybe 2 person job.
Glad to see you got some use out of the Wagga Wagga beanies! Hope you get warmer weather next visit 😊
So glad we had them. Thank you. Warmer would be nice but not the Australian HOT!! LOL
Thank you, I'm really enjoying following your trip! Lacy likes her slippers doesn't she!
Thanks for that and yes, Lacy LOVES her slippers lol
So much fun! Wish you could have stayed longer 😢
Really enjoyed this. Hope to do a bike ride on this road.
Yes. Do it!
Grampians, I hope you got to experience The Zumsteins
We saw a Zumstein sign but didn't have time to go see. Loved what we did see at the Grampians though.
You be very Careful in Deranged dan Land!!!
They'll be safe if they stay away from those red trucks, Coles Semi's n Aus Post Trucks both drive worse then me.. Who is Dan? If it was years ago then I'd know Andrews was a dick.
And do you have any idea how long a round trip to the hut ?
We only went as far as the bridge but our daughter had walked to the hut. 8km walk there and back to the hut. The trail was steeper past the bridge that's why our daughter didn't take us all the way. We're old. LOL
Thank you for the video. How long did that hike take round trip?
So interesting around that area with lots of marine life to spot too. Also very impressed with the Lacy Raygun photo! 😆
We loved seeing the area where Tansey and Caleb live too. I agree. Tansey did well to capture Lacy in action
Nice town been there stayed there still here 😊well over 13 years
Nice. Well done
i live there
Adelaide the city of Churches.
Allways wondered what it looked like on the other side
The Hindmarsh Island and surrounding areas look such a great place to visit - or live! So much to see and do. Thanks for sharing the local history too. Missing you all more now! Can't wait to see more Straya adventures. (I love Tansey's face when the cocky talks back! 😃)
Thanks Lynne. Yes Tansey's a very lucky girl living there. A lovely place. Keep watching. You'll be coming up soon. 😉
Loved taking the adventure with you. Loved the narration. Loved that you took the time to video the maps/trail/road signs and telling the significance of the various points of interest. And I'm planning on riding the Remutaka Rail Trail in Nov 2024, so it was nice to see you also rode (the weather) in Nov. Great job!!!
Thanks for the lovely comment and we hope that you enjoy the rail trail as much as we did.
South Australia has got alot to show for, from Qld 🦘
Hi Qld, really enjoyed SA with a lot more to see yet. Keep watching😄
Memories
When you pan around with your camera slow down, if you go to fast people watching it will get a head ache. Love what you are doing keep it up.
Thanks for the tip. I know I have to remember to slow down. I get too excited and carried away in the moment. LOL
That river walk I never knew was there. Last there in 2012.
Tgats cool, the old track could be a real mish, esp when ski season!!
I agree there
Travelled that road from kune to masterton many times to see my Nan,was definitely a bit scary as a youngster back in the seventies especially after rain and slips
Same. I know exactly what you mean
Your a cool narrator meke video
Thanks
Congrats that would of been a very nice treat for you both.
Yes such a pleasant surprise
Thanks for that, I loved it. I spent my childhood in Pukerua Bay, walked to Paekakariki along the beach/footpath a couple of times and travelled on that railway line twice a day to college and back - brought back some great memories!😊
Lets be real no helmets gonna save you from a falling boulder
but perfect against small debris.
We used to visit my dads parents in danniverke every Xmas so got to go through the gorge a fair few times. Us kids were quite scared, and dad knowing this, when it was quiet eg 6 in the morning he would go quite fast, just to make it even more scary 😳🤣
i miss driving it just something about it was sooo chill even thought it was corner after corner bend after bend.... my only issue was people doing 40kph through it when you could do 80kph easy, if trucks could so can cars
Huh yes, you're so right
This video makes me itchy to go exploring. Awesome!
The seaviews gardens were lovely. There used to be a bird avairy, rotunda, music and other things up there!! The water tower changes colours at night! The old Trading Post is now a huge Mitre 10. The horse drawn carriage is returning to foxton soon. The forest has all been cut down near the Wake Boarding area sadly. The River Loop, Skate Park playground area and beach are lovely walks with my wee dog. Did you see the wharf down by the Boating Club? Another lovely area! ❤
Great information. Thanks for that. We missed the wharf area. Will have to take a look next time we're passing through
I miss the gorge learned how to drive in a hillman hunter going through there. It was a beautiful road to drive through. Much safer than the saddle
I agree with you there
As Did I Hillman Hunter.
Takapau Aye Well Well Well I Never .... I Use To Live Here Back In Early 70s My Step Dad Was On Railways There We Lived On Same Street As The Small Park Was On Use To Be Plane In That Park Our House Was On Opposite Side Of The Park But Down A Bit Towards Railway Station My Brother And My Sister And Myself Use To Go To The Local Primary School I'm Not Sure How Long We Stayed In Takapau For But We Ended Moving Out From There To A Small Area Called Marakeke Out There Was A Small One Man Railway Station And Two Railway Houses Back On To Each Other Across The Way From There Was A Lime Works Place Called Hatuma Twenty Twenty Five Minutes Away Was The Township Of Waipukurau My Second Youngest Sister Was Born There And I Remember My Mum Having An Operation At Same Hospital To Have Her Teeth Removed Memories Of Old But Unfortunately Not Sometimes Happy Ones About 5 Maybe 10 Minutes From Waipukurau Township Was A Hospital Called Pukeora And My Mum Worked There As A Registered Nurse For Quite. a Number Of Years My 2 Siblings And My Self Attended The Catholic School In Waipukurau Called Saint Joseph Intermediate God Yeah Those Were The Days Man We Moved To Woodville From There That's Another Story 👍👍
Great memories for you. We visited Waipukurau too and saw the old hospital on the hill. Glad THOSE days are over.
Illegal isnt it
All the more fun
That whole area is a dump
Interesting video, used to travel over the gorge regularly. It's amazing how dilapidated the road has gotten in less than 10 years.
Hmm As a cyclist who has retired I thought I might add a few comments on your commentary that may improve future ones. Firstly I do not find appealing introspective comments as you are travelling around. Comments like those about the folk song are much better presented. They do not sound like they are being presented by a wee kid that doesn't have much else to say. Sorry I don' t want to discourage you. I did find this a vast improvement on the video you did on the Manawatu Gorge bike trip. Comments about the old railway carriages being dumped at Taumaranui are also well done for example. Hope that might be some constructive input to someone who has not the courage to do such a presentation himself.
Thanks for the constructive input. Duly noted. But I am who I am. Might be hard to change! I can only try now. Thanks
Well now i understand why we cant drive on this road anymore! Thanks, take care.😅
we used to go possum hunting through the gorge, about 8 of us all on motorbikes and with guns, min d you it was 55years ago ,lol.
That sounds like fun. Nice
I remember back in the days when being told that an American company had wanted to build a mega super highway right through the Manawatu river itself and local iwi stopped that idea right in its tracks!
Typical.
Wow. Hadn't heard that one. Would have been a good idea in hindsight.
I'm not usually a reckless, trespassing law breaker but I love this route now and so do plenty of others. Cycled it a once when it was open to cars and trucks and it was terrifying and genuinely dangerous. Now its far safer than the heavily trafficked alternative Pahiatua track. The slips have mostly stabilized now that they are not being removed from the road and the encounter probability to rockfall is almost negligible due to the low use during wet stormy weather. This type of closure smells like apathetic risk aversion and low priority for funding walking/cycling projects. The large holes in the fence next to the intimidating signs seem to be tolerated but what a shame this can't receive a small investment to officially open an important connection. Hope your video can encourage some action. Closures are often for quite valid reasons but I would invite the small number of commenters from the "Tsk! Tsk! brigade" to relax about this one. It's really not that risky. Perhaps consider that rules are for the obeisance of fools and the guidance of the wise.
Totally agree. Thanks for that.
nice vid! i want to ride this road
Go for it!
Chillax, all you safety freaks. There are more risks, with worse access, just about anywhere in the NZ bush. What about all the people drowned crossing rivers or fishing from small boats at sea? Are they all irresponsible, too? Tell you what, why don’t you try to get rugby banned? I’ll warrant you’re at more risk of injury playing a game of footie than you are cycling gently along the Old Gorge Road for 80 minutes.
Great video. Thanks for showing this
No problem 👍
Trying to fix the Manawatu Gorge was a logistical nightmare and a big waste of tax payer money.
Oh yes. Glad those days are over.
It’s so refreshing to see a kiwi couple adventuring around and giving real facts and history, not all these sponsored influencers. We watch all your videos and when we travel around, and go to places you’ve beenwe always think about your R&D adventures and have a laugh. You always look like you’re having so much fun - love your cheeky attitude towards travel and signage and “closures.” Thanks for the great videos and good luck catching up to Bobby 😉
Thanks so much for the lovely comments. Glad you enjoy them
love yr pronounciation of the maori place names around our town ..great vids thanks!
I love how you included commentary about the history of the track and area as well! Feels like a school trip 💙
My understanding where the name Wainuiomata came from. After Teraparaha invaded Lower Hutt and the women and children fled over the hill into wainuiomata where they were found weeping. The translation is Tears of Mata, who was a Maori woman.
Very interesting. Great information. Thanks for that
As a young teen in the mid 60s I visited my older married sister who lived in Ngongataha, made friends very quickly, it was the first time I ever drove a car (1950 Ford Prefect) I was 14 and even had my first romantic kiss there… yuk lol. There were places that tourists could go called Rainbow Springs and Fairy Springs where you could play with tame trout, some locals had a back yard with a small hot spring which some converted to cook food from the naturally heated volcanic underground, others built or constructed a private mineral bathing pool, very therapeutic, there was no place like it. Others my age took me to places where we could catch fish, mainly large Trout, was an amazing experience will never forget it.
What lovely memories you have. It appears the Springs closed thanks to the effects of Covid
The coldest I have EVER been in my life was when I stayed at a friend's place near the river. It was winter and misty and the cold just seeped into your bones, I couldn't get warm.
I know exactly what you mean. We've been there on those cold, foggy days too. That's Taumarunui for ya!
😂I look this place up because recently one of me mates said he was off to taumarunui stay with old friend for a few days he was back the next morning said it was too fukn cold he just couldn't get warm
