Constellations | Parts Work with Bill Tierney

"Great conversation! I'd love to hear more about recognizing the signs that you're nearing your limit before hitting 'defcon 3.' I often realize too late, and my 'meet the deadline' parts overpower my 'self-care' instincts. I know the sensible advice is to stop and go inward, but I could use a 'trick' to actually follow through on that."

I was glad to hear you say that you weren't comfortable with the term "boundaries". I feel the same way. The idea of boundaries comes up a lot in therapy and therapy courses I've been taking. Boundaries feels like less connection - like I'm putting up a wall between me and the people close to me. I prefer to think in terms of "needs". It's important to communicate your needs to have a healthy relationship. When someone tells me their needs and what's important to them, I feel empathy and a deeper sense of connection, and I have a better understanding of how I can contribute to our relationship.

I'm glad you lke it Autumn. I have found it useful to formalize the internal space and make it safe, familiar, and comfortable to meet with my parts when they need my attention or when I am curious about them. "Inside," until recently was undefined. Now, I go to a place on a cliff overlooking a valley in a local state park where I used to stop during long runs for grounding and meditation. I spent enough time there to vividly remember the setting. Now, I have that space inside me and can go there any time. The imagination is an amazing and powerful faculty.

@@billtierneycoaching1 so for most of my life I have had a lot of anger and mistrust towards the outside world (society). However through my (Self) work in the past six years I have started to realise (this year) that by far most of that anger and mistrust is actually in my inside world. It's my parts who have anger and mistrust towards mySelf. (But as a coping mechanism or adaptability mechanism I have externalised that anger and mistrust). So that sentence that Alison said really resonated with me because I sense that by continuing my (Self) work, by forgiving mySelf and trusting mySelf (as well as unburdening my exiles), I can achieve that "internal sense of safety and welcome". It's all about looking in... not out :)

It's kind of hard to put into words, but there is just something about, I guess, the connectedness between the three of you and the way you talk about IFS. Something very soothing and endearing. I have been on a journey of self recovery/discovery and healing for about 6 years now. I was introduced to parts work 2 years ago through EMDR (but that didn't last), but I have been learning about IFS now for a few weeks and in my discovery of IFS I stumbled upon you channel. IFS is making so much sense to me and the way you talk about IFS in your videos is teaching me even more/better on how my own parts function and how I can connect with them. In the Lesson 4 video you talk about the wednesday group meetings and you mention that they are open for all. I am very curious if I can join those meetings. Are those meetings still going on? Also, the image of bringing the values, standards and rules and beliefs of parts from our unconscious a little at a time for updating is fantastic. Really good. I have studied Cliff Barry’s Shadow Work model and there is so much overlap. Find the part, characterise it, get to know the part and regress the scene IE you weren’t born (probably) with this part, where has it showed up on your life before? I loved the honouring of the anxious part and seeing how it (I think) played an important manager role in an early chaotic childhood. Thank you 🙏🏻 I will be watching more!!
