Alpine Rescue Team Hoist Rescue

Crestone Needle, September 19, 2020. The use of helicopters in Search and REscue is dangerous, and Colorado's high elevations and warm summertime temperatures only compounds the dangers for the aviators and rescue crews. The use of a helicopter is limited to rescue those whose injuries that are life-, limb-, or eyesight-threatening, or when conditions put ground rescuers at significant peril. T...

    I would like to thank all those involved with this rescue for your service. Also a thanks for uploading this video. I was wondering if a dye penetrant test could be helpful when inspecting your equipment such as the carabiners, hooks or any metal hardware. The dye penetrant test is used when building engines to detect cracks in components like aluminum cylinder heads. This test would seem more likely to catch any crack or defect in the hardware than a visual inspection would, especially considering the amount your hardware is being used. Keep up the great work.

    What was wrong with this guy? He didn't seem to have any obvious medical issues, broken bones, etc. He was obviously alone. Was he soloing a technical route and got in over his head? He also didn't seem to have any technical gear, unless it was in his pack. He didn't seem to be in any distress. Impressive rescue, less than impressive responsibility by the climber, or was he just a hiker, though the terrain is clearly not hiking terrain.

    • @alpinerescuevideos2315

      It's not directly obvious, that this was the injured climber's partner. The injured individual had been evacuated prior to this footage. The partner was not injured, but was in a precarious spot and was lifted out after his partner.

      I'm hijacking this comment since it's got the highest number of likes. I'm the Colorado Army National Guard PAO and I actually made a 30-minute documentary on this rescue for anyone that is interested. It includes the GoPro footage seen here, but also includes a lot more footage from the surrounding mountain/ build up to the rescue. I also have interviews from the two climbers that were rescued, as well as the crew that conducted the rescue. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/ApOem4DFkss/видео.html

      @pierreolsson588 11 месяцев назад

      Yup, kind of weird! It is the job of the hoist operator to just lower the person, he is on radio with the pilot telling him where the person is compared to the ground, typically you say ”half way”, then ”30 feet” ”20 feet” and so on. The Guy dangling only need to start signaling when he is close to the ground. No need to start waving your arms around right out the door…

    I will continue to support the Alpine Rescue Team. I have never had to use it for myself, however, I led a Boy Scout group up Bierstadt a couple years ago and had an adult fall and break 3 ribs. Labored breathing forced a helo evac rather than ground rescue. Windy day and landing was not easy, but, it was accomplished, and the adult was rescued off the mountain. Thank you for what you do.
