I fly a Vans RV8 and a Whisper Motorglider from Morningstar airfield in Cape Town South Africa. I have a Private Pilot Licence and describe myself as a 'weekend warrior'. Flights on a weekend, often on my own but also with friends and family, is what I do most. I have probably got more hours talking about flying at the hangar then I do in the air. When time allows and weather permits I enjoy the weekend fly away and flying adventures with friends and members of my flying club.
I know I won't fly forever and these videos allow me to record my memories and share the experience with others. It truly is a privilege to fly which I don't take for granted.

Seans' Saturday flight

Pretty much the calm before the storm. Saturday was windy aloft with the wind all over the place. But a fun flight with Sean to Saldanha, the coffee shop, camps Bay and back to Morningstar.

Flying along the Orange River
Просмотров 4903 месяца назад
While up in Springbok we routed home from the pan by flying northwards initially to the border between South Africa and Namibia. The border is designated by the Orange River. We followed the river to the border post Vioolsdrif, and then returned to Springbok.

The quality of this video overall exceeds the expectations of a channel this small. Great video/presentation.
@@grantcaprice2902 thanks. Takes time. The channels biggest fan is me! I do it for my memories.
would love to do this one day

The person who started the Solitaire apple strudel tradition passed away in 2014. He was Percy 'Moose' McGregor.
@@kwaailight Thanks. Still worth popping in to see the place.
@@timothyirvine2842 absolutely! A very special little remote spot!
I thought the long airstrip at Upington was for Boeing 747 Cargo planes taking export grapes to Europe? That may have predated the Shuttle flights?
@@kwaailight you are right. One of the longest runways in the world for high and hot conditions for big heavy planes. I googled and someone said the NASA thing is an urban legend. I like the story though.
@@timothyirvine2842 I would not be surprised if the runway DID serve as an alternative/emergency one for the shuttle, but it was not built for that purpose.
Nice ZU-ICE
Timothy where is your home airport in the Cape?
It’s called Morningstar and it’s just to the north of CapTown international, in fact under the approach to runway 19.
niiiiice
Stunning footage Timothy! Man, it looks dry there.
I’ll be in CPT in first week of OCT.
Beautiful Timothy! 👌
Beautiful, I spent 5 months in the Cape. Brings back good memories ! Thanks
Farm air strip??? Looks like a junk yard or something you would find "inner city." Nice job on your flying skills.
Nice but yeah, the trees are a little intimidating! Good job
Wow, Tim. This is beautiful. Nice choice in music as well. What airport is this? I want to check out in my flight sim.
The airfield called Morningstar. It is under the approach for runway 19 at Cape Town. Flight sim shows houses where there are hangars!
Stunning video and editing Timothy! Brilliant flying too! 👌🤝
Sling must have been at half throttle!
we told Ian to make us look good.
Magic!!
Great footage!
Hope to join you flying one day Tim.
Let’s make a plan. That way I know your Dad will check her very very well. In fact when I bought ICE in the pre purchase inspection Damon said, ‘I would let me kids fly in it.’ Now I need to put that to the test 😁
@@timothyirvine2842 Just let me know when you are planning on going up and i will be very keen on joining you. 😎
Beautiful day, beautiful scenery, beautiful livery. What else could you ask for?... A free annual would be nice!! Thanks for sharing, Tim!
I’ll settle for a thorough annual. 🙂
a further fantastic flight video! I will come back to Morningstar Airfield! BR Alex
Nice landing Tim this comment is from Jude
Hi Jude, you checking up on me. I always enjoy landing at Cape Town. The runway is super long, over 3km. I try fly as efficiently as possible so you will see two things, I ask the controller if I can ‘plan for Charlie’. That’s the second intersection which means I land deep so I don’t land on the numbers and taxi forever holding up departing traffic. Second thing is my flaps. My speed is higher than usual as I come in to approach on final, again just to be efficient. It’s too fast for full flaps, so I descend and fly just above the runway. As the speed bleeds off I then add flaps - you can see how late I put full flaps in the video. Hope you enjoying your flying and making great videos.
Another great video, beautiful views and good background music.
Cool video. One comment - I usually choose the fullest tank before startup, and then stay with it through taxi, run-up, and takeoff. I've heard of cases where a change was made just before takeoff, and it caused an outage. I'm thinking of the case where there is a bit of water in the tank, and if you stay with that tank you probably have time to see if there is an impact before takeoff.
I was taught taxi out on the lowest tank. Then as you stock check area clear, brakes holding and change tanks. Then do the run up and all the check on the tank you going to take off on. That should be enough time to pick up an issue with fuel. It should be enough time to pick up something like water etc.
Great video, nice tunes. Was that a full flap landing or 1/2? Seemed to handle well in the spin with someone in the rear seat. CS prop? -8 owner myself.
Its always a full flap landing with me. I tried a spin solo (after practicing with an instructor in the back), and I just couldn't get the spin to develop. I need someone in the back - Grace was good ballast. My RV is as simple as it gets. Fixed pitch prop and as I operate mostly at sea level its enough for me. The 8 is the best! enjoy.
@@timothyirvine2842 Thanks Tim...have the same set up as you. Have to fly with 25# of sand in the aft baggage to lighten the stick forces when flying solo.
I always land full flap … I went back and looked at the video and checked against another one - you are right, that was not full flap! I had one plane land ahead and put flaps on base. I obviously didn’t fully extend on final. I have to hold my switch in as the flaps extend. Thanks for pointing that out!
@@timothyirvine2842 Keep in mind I was just curious and not trying to be critical.
@@jcheck6 I appreciated the observation. The videos are for the memories, but also for me to learn. I sometimes film stuff just for me and then analyse it afterwards. Good way to learn and its interesting what I pick up.
Great video, Vans ought to thank you for your service, makes me want one every day.
The RV's sell themselves!
That looked like a great flight from here. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Tim that was awesome. Jude from FZV
You time your flight well Jude. Sunset was beautiful. I heard you and Jaco enjoying the Delta 200 and Blouberg. It was a beautiful evening and good to meet you.
great video like to hear the tower talking and the different views. Keep those videos coming.
beautiful plane can't wait to find one.
Why did you install the old ap? there are far better units available today.. available

Am I correct in saying that is an RV 4 ? Intresting perspective the 360 camera has when you were flying the centerline of the runway .Thank you for sharing.
Its an RV8, similar but a bit bigger than the 4.
Dig the camera lens and view! Thanks for sharing with us all!
The Insta is a very cool camera.
where is that ?
It’s a small town called Springbok. It’s in the Northern Cape, in South Africa and is close to the Namibian border. The area is known for its mining including copper, granite and other commodities. It’s a beautiful area that’s gets it’s water piped from the Orange Rive some 100k’s to the north.
South Africa? Beautiful country.
Yes it is SA. I’m based in Cape Town and a number of us flew north for about 1 hour 45 minutes, which takes us to the northern Cape. The area we landed it called the Richtersveld and is close to the Namibian border. It’s truly is beautiful scenery.
@@timothyirvine2842 Interesting , hello from a guy in Canada! I once read a book called " My Heart is Africa" About the experiences of a guy who flew his Cassna 180 across the Atlantic via Azore's from Canada and spent two years volunteering for Doctor's without Borders. He flew down that way as well as all over Africa, if you find that book I recommend it.
lovely views. Just sort out audio. Wingtip cam had a awful high pitch wistle. Fair skies and tail winds!!
Nice turn out on a beautiful day.👍
Enjoyed the video! Thanks for including all the radio work!
The audio records on just one of the cameras so it makes editing quite a bit longer. Sometimes that battery dies or the mic isn't plugged in properly, so it doesn't always work, but when it does its good.
Stunning guys! Was brilliant to watch. Loved it all.
"Bumpy today." "Good practice." I love it!
Yip ... get on with it.
Good one Johan
Tim,, each time you fall back it's because you take power off to adjust but don't put it back on again immediately (good example at 8:20). When it does come back on it's too late. Johan, when you go out its because you're not matching bank at the steeper angles, you're a few degrees short (check 10:28). If you master that, barrels will be easy...
Nice cloud surf.
Very Cool Formation Flight!!!
It’s all just practice to get better. Full of errors, that’s what the video is for, but we getting better. There was more but my battery went flat and Johan’s camera came unstuck.
Was it a three-point Landing or a wheel landing?
Yip a wheeler with tail low. Works best for me.
Tight approach and nice music 😊
Good stuff.
How cool…….. Bravo
Music is definitely distracting.
....WHY MUZAK! Spoilt it.
