Prevent Ice Dams in Your Freezer with Vaseline?
this could have saved me $$$$ if I would have had it during a house slab leak..... I got one now and highly recommend!!!!!!!!!! Cheap Insurance!!!!!!!!!!
I totally hear you there...hindsight is 20/20. I'm a survivor of an under slab leak as well, but a water sensor would not have helped--a water monitor would. I'm curious. How would a sensor have detected a slab leak for you?
Integration is huge. That's why things like matter compatibility are a must for me. Getting stuck in an echo system isn't good for consumers or their wallets. Great video you can't even get most of this info from the govee site. The plug test is a great catch. I would always make sure they are fully plugged in and no gap. You can have arching across plugs when a gap is present.
I'm happy to hear it helped! You are right there--matter is the future. I've heard it from the manufacturers of the water monitors as well.
I got the gen 1 and I’m running into an issue where I can’t hear the alarm in my basement when I’m 2 floors up. Is there way to group the alarms to all sound when one senses water or make it connect to a speaker.
Given I was able to hook even the supposedly non compatible Gen 1's onto IFTTT, I think you are on to something there. Like using IFTTT with Alexa or some other connected speaker to solve that problem. Given, an alert should still make it to your phone. But if you are looking for an audible something along those lines should work. I'd love to hear what ends up working for you!
Used it on my floor for a hearth and in random squares in my parlour. Love it, I would install it again. I thought about putting it in my shower and didn't think it would drain well. However, my bridge has it in his walk in shower and drains fine.
Thanks for sharing! I think the stones nowadays are quite a bit better than when I made this video. With the correct slope and a better choice of stones than mine you'll probably be happy--especially if you've seen it work in other places.
This video deserves way more views, thank you!
Do you need a homebase for this protect from work?
For this product to work*
Thank you for your kind words.
The sensors require the gateway/hub that comes with each set--or at least the starter sets because they also offer sensor only sets, but it is with the expectation you have the correct gateway.
How do you know which one is which device to change name ?
You can set off each alarm one at a time--just set it in a little water. The app will tell you which one and you can rename the one that just went off.
The most difficult thing about repairs is the digging. We do things because that’s the way they’ve always been done. Gotta be a better way!
Agreed. If you figure it out you are in business!!!! 💰💰💰
My Moen Flo lasted less than 3 years. No longer getting power, even after ordering a new power supply from Moen. Poorly designed.
Thank you for sharing. Definitely not the best experience. I'm curious. Where was it located? I'm guessing indoors if it lasted 3 years. Did you take it off and shake it? If so, can you hear water sloshing inside? Mine were outdoors and failed on the interior like that. Water went into the electronics side and fried the circuits. I haven't heard of anyone having that same problem if it is indoors. My latest unit is almost at 4 years, but it is inside (not on my house).
@@NoMoreLeaks Yes, indoors and no, I have not removed it so not sure what the cause is but sounds like what you are describing-water getting into the electronics. I'll wait until someone (another company) comes out with a better and more reliable design...hopefully. I spent a lot of money trying to do the right thing, and to have this fail in such a short span of time is frustrating. I have also had bad luck with Moen sink valves. The ones I replaced were still working after ~30 years but I decided to get ahead of any issues and replace them. One would leak when turned all the way to the cold side, so I had to replace it. Also (sorry for the rant) I had purchased smart water leak detectors (batter operated) and they arrived with the battery contacts sliding around inside...they weren't soldered. Returned those.
@@jimroberts6176 Interesting! I haven't heard of the inside failure happening on a unit installed indoors yet. When mine failed the lights went out so I figured why waste money keeping the AC adapter powered on, so I unplugged the device and left it inline--only to discover water dripping out of the power plug days later! I'd highly recommend putting in the spacer that came with the unit and taking the unit off to prevent a leak from the device itself if you have the internal leak. If you don't mind, when you do take it off, I'd love to know if that is what actually happened. Rants are welcome--comments are the best part of videos. We all share what works and what doesn't. :) As for the leak detectors. Do you recall the brand? I'm slowly working my way through a good number of different sensors (shared on the channel) and haven't come across a terrible one yet. Too bad Flo ended the IFTTT integration because their detectors are spendy!
@@NoMoreLeaks Thanks for the suggestion about the spacer. The leak detectors were Moen (Flo by Moen Sensors)
Happy to help--and prevent water damage from a leaking unit! That would be insult to injury. Wow on that feedback on the Moen Sensors.
Seems to me we should consider and measure from the face of the drawer , not the base. and take into account how far the handles are sticking out ...
Agreed. Definitely a few things to consider there. Thank you for adding this!
Good share
Thanks! An update is coming soon.
Why do you have to push down so hard on the towels to get it to alarm??? I never liked the feet on these sensors... you push so hard on the towel when u remove the sensor u can see the imprint of the sensor on the towel?? Will it not sense if you dont put pressure?
Agreed, a wet towel is not the best test because you have to work harder to complete the circuit. Honestly, I didn't feel like wiping up the mess. However, in my unboxing and setup videos the first thing I do is take it out and put it in a wet spot on the floor. That's a true test because these sensors aren't going to be dealing with a towel--the water is just going to go under them. Here's a better test of the V1: ruclips.net/video/Ist5G8qNvOA/видео.html and of the V2: ruclips.net/video/ztDhLEDKWMM/видео.html. Hope that helps and thanks for the feedback.
something new i hadnt known bout
I'm happy to hear it helped. I hope it makes your decision easier.
I just moved the water input to cold since our water heater died. Makes me feel good knowing my hot water wasn't reaching the dw anyways!!! Great post, THANKS!!!
Glad to have helped. 🙌 on the $ saved!
Good info thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this... having to enable location on the Gen2's is a deal-breaker for me and that's not listed anywhere that I could find!
Right? Happy to help--I was unpleasantly surprised as well. Having tried out a couple more LoRa sensors since then, it seems this may be a common requirement across the devices using that technology. Given, my sample size is pretty small, but something to keep in mind.
Build a dog house around the unit and naturally condition? Similar to air compressors relocated to the exterior of a building?
Thanks for sharing! Too bad it is on the front of the house, but it could be a pretty dog house. I have a few theories--one of which I think may be the real culprit. I'm working on a follow up video to go over these issues right now. Stay tuned!
Where did you get the Phyn plus rough plumbing blank?
From Phyn. TBH, it was a hard sell and they sent it because it was during the time when Phyn Plus was not available due to parts shortages.
I did this same thing at my house
💯👏 peace of mind!
Thanks 🙏
Glad to hear it was helpful. Best of luck on your project!
My bathroom sink does NOT have an overflow and I'm about to replace it. My main reason is that without an overflow the sink drains VERY slowly.
I hope the new sink helps!
Thank you! This is the second time around we had to do something about the build up around the magnets. I can's remember what we did the first time... cleaned or replaced. This time we did get a replacement kit, thanks to you and your video. I decide to soak the old one in vinegar and keep it just in case. The vinegar cleaned out the rust. There is some black stuff left around both magnets, and I don't remember if it's some sort of material that should be left there, or do I need to clean it more so only the shiny spikes are left? Some of the black stuff already dissolved... Hope you see this! 🙏🙏🙏
I'm wondering if the black stuff is what is beneath the outer surface of the magnets. At some point if you have rust building up it can eat through the outer shiny part of the magnet and leave a rough surface which is easier for rust to build up again. If it is not that I have no idea what the black stuff could be. Glad to hear the replacement kit did the trick in the meantime!
Terrible design to me, because it's impossible to wipe clean the inside of them, and they provide an avenue for bugs like cockroaches to enter your house. I would prefer sinks without an overflow.
I can see this viewpoint although that means you'd have to keep the drain closed in order to prevent bugs from coming up too. It certainly is gross when you have to do more than a simple drain stopper cleanup and have to take the entire assembly apart!
This was clear and very helpful.
Thank you. I hope it made your decision easier.
Retrofitting corrective sill sealer on an existing structure would’ve been a nice addition to your video
Good suggestion! Thanks for leaving your comment.
THANK YOU!!!♥
Happy to have helped! How long did your turbine last?
Do you know if copper or stainless rings are okay for underground pex coupling repairs?
It depends on what kind of pex you are trying to repair.
Very convenient super easy install just did it today 👍
🙌 Nicely done! Appreciate you coming back to share.
Moen is now sending out free replacement kits for the defective turbine - I got mine and it arrived free of charge. They actually contacted me and offered to send it for no cost - if you haven't been contacted and have this issue you should be able to get a free replacement kit as well. It included new O rings as well as a free water spill monitoring device.
How interesting! Thank you for sharing. I'm curious. How did they contact you? I've been a Flo Protect customer over 5 years (need to cancel that now that I'm passed the extended warranty), but haven't received a notice I'm aware of. Maybe I missed it?
Hi thank you for the tips. Did you use acetone or other stripper first?
This is what I used: Max Strip Paint & Varnish Stripper: amzn.to/37ZITW1 I'd double check with Home Depot or Lowe's too.
I have a radiant floor leak in the slab somewhere. I noticed my bill and water meter going nuts so I started closing valves past the main to see where it was going, that's how I found out I had a radiant floor leak. Now the hard part, how do I go about fixing something like that? I think I may know where the leak is but the pipes are from the late 70's, will they be fine or is the whole thing going to need to be replaced?
Oh no! What a relief you at least found the source! That's a situation I haven't encountered before, but sounds terrible. Maybe drop this comment on some radiant floor leak videos?
4:11 that's electrical conduit and it isn't cheap at all. The video you show of those is like 2-10 times the price of pvc lmao sizing up to 2 inch pvc as you say at 4:43 would be ~10 not 21.50, much cheaper
Good video and great you have links. I'm just curious how big your house is to need a 1" line. I have worked on several houses in the 4000 sqft size and the pipes are always 3/4" and then branched down to 1/2". plus your supply going into the service meter would have to be 1" or larger to even be worth it.
Thank you. Great question. It was leftover from another project. That's why we had a coupling in the line because we didn't have enough for a full run and used two pieces. You are spot on there. Even the new, 2-3K sq/ft houses in the next neighborhood have 3/4" and they have fire sprinkler systems so that makes sense a house has to be pretty large to justify the increase.
If you have ever replaced a drain you would be amazed at the amount of debris and gunk that is trapped in the dead space in the sink surrounding the overflow holes in the drain. This totally grossed me out and I would rather risk an overflow than knowing the gunk that can collect here. The new pop up drains are very easy to install, so I think I will see how a new non-overflow drain works instead. I am also using a pop up drain with a hair catcher to also keep it very clean. So far my sink is draining quickly and I’m quite a dirt freak 😮.
I hear you! When everyone was home during Covid and the sinks were getting used all hours of the day and never drying up. I'd pull the whole assembly apart to clean out the gunk everywhere. I'll admit I haven't liked the pop up drain as much as I hoped. The stainless isn't holding up and I'm worried it will stick in the down position. I'd love to hear if you find a good long term solution.
made a big mistake of not knowing how important building a smooth compacted base and then compacting in layers on top of my sprinkler lines. this video helped explain how to do it right which i wish i would have watched before
Oh no! Did it cause an issue?
My first tile job…last year…my master bath floor…sliced, multicolor Indonesian river pebble. I had to individually place many of my tiles. Toughest part of the job was grouting, getting residual grout from the stones. About to do a second bath the same way and hoping 2 coats of 511 Impregnator, prior to grouting, makes this easier. My master bath floor is my favorite spot in our home. I feel a kind of connection to each stone that I worked. Very very few of the stones had that lip feature, and those were simply set aside. I still have them, though. 🤗
Thank you for sharing. It was worth the time and effort to place each stone--that's a regret I have. Best of luck on round 2. I'd love to hear if the seal coat makes grout easier.
Will this help prevent roots growing into the line?
You know, it probably would have that added side benefit too! 👍
Wow, didn't realize so many places have the plumbing outside and purposely south facing?
We're on a grid system out in here in the Phoenix metro. Just got lucky buying the right orientation--and then fell into this kind of testing. Who knew how great of a testbed this house would be for the industry. 🤣 It's bad news when these devices become code...
2024 - Maybe beginner guide or summary Getting the mats, leak sensors, smart shut off valve, maybe the smart home integration... I'm still figuring which one to get I thought for sure Flo by Moen but now catching up on content about phyn, and there's h2wise by kohler by phyn???
Thanks for the feedback! I have some major updates on where I stand on these devices with the long term testing--on both testing the devices and the companies themselves. That's the subject for the next two videos in production. Since you are looking now: Phyn Plus may be a great choice with features that Flo does not, but my issue is that the inside of the pipe inside of Phyn breaks down. I can see the engineered polymer fibers and I'm not comfortable having that floating around in water I or my family is ingesting. It happened in the Gen 1 and the Gen 2 when left exposed to the sun. This last unit I bought myself and it never saw the sun, but still had to be outdoors in the heat. The same problem occurred. That leaves the combination of heat and hard water of which I can't eliminate one to continue the test. Phyn ghosted me after a good conversation on possible things we could try last year. Without a replacement unit, which I finally was able to get a return last week, I could not start the experiment in a different location to see if the unit does just fine indoors. The engineered polymer is not unique to Phyn. It is the same thing Badger Meter is using in smart meters. However, the difference is, smart meters are located in a fully shaded box underground in the front yard, if they are outdoors like they are here: less heat. I am very concerned with this issue and without another test point where the device is fine for years indoors, I cannot in good faith recommend Phyn Plus or H2Wise+. In addition, other viewers have reached out that the H2Wise+ has a pretty bad app and it does not support sensors. TLDR: go with Flo over Phyn Plus. There are a couple other options available to you if the device is housed safe inside. It depends on what you are looking at budget wise, the integration you want, household usage, etc.
@@NoMoreLeaks thank you for this extra info, look forward to your future videos Ok, the plumbing is inside. I am intrigued with the information these devices can provide with the leak detection. Yeah I started googling/reading reviews and reddit and saw similar sentiment about h2wise and you're just better off with Phyn plus over h2wise since Kohler support just tells you apparently to contact Phyn Thank you again for all your insights
If it is any help, here are the direct links to the playlists I have for Flo and Phyn. Phyn Playlist - ruclips.net/p/PLzio78R2Y1xmFsNYxa93fIU9ObTcwchlw Flo Playlist - ruclips.net/p/PLzio78R2Y1xnD6HOjhSxcIr1RvUySdJXK The feature review videos show more than just tell. The cost video is another good one. I'm looking into FloLogic to replace Phyn and Flo--there just isn't a lot of information out there on that system.
@@NoMoreLeaks thank you, i'll check it out, the name is too close to Moen Flo, might as well go with Luigi's Leak Logic, Mario's Plumbing Monitor, Donatello's Leak Detector I kinda liked Moen because of the brand and felt I'd get support, i think for better or worse as average consumer name Kohler makes you feel more confident about Phyn
LOL. The funny thing is FloLogic was one of the first, if not the first in the game 20+ years ago. 100% agree on brand awareness being a thing. I haven't interacted with Moen since the transition since the last device has not had issues for years. Flo's customer service was phenomenal. I can't say the same for Phyn.
You guys in Arizona doing some good work on RUclips, i feel like im following a few in Arizona really after it I kinda need the reverse tho, need the winter/cold climate version of these channels Thank you for your content
Thank you for the kind words. Fire away if you have questions. My #5 Flo is operating in a climate controlled basement in the cold winter climate of Nebraska. I wish I could say the same for Phyn Plus, but the company did not extend that offer back when I asked to restart the clock there while debugging the issue here...or subsequent times. Your situation is ideal where your plumbing comes in indoors, which is much more forgiving on these devices.
And of coarse move back the pipe insulation so you can see what your doing. Pro tip
Heh, yep.
Awesome review....TY♡

Question for you. In this video. The shut off valve is green color. I just bought from Costco. The shut off valve is light blue. ?. So, how I know my is real or fake unit.?. Bought it July 2024. Thanks
The good news is there are no fakes or knockoffs yet. Moen had slowly acquired Flo over the years and with each step along the way the housing, name on the unit and coloring has changed. My last couple devices, which you see in the video, were when Moen had the majority stake and it says Flo by Moen. You have the latest and greatest design with Flo being fully acquired and owned by Moen.
@@NoMoreLeaks , thank you very much for your response. 👍❤️
I occasionally take my spray bottle of 409 or Fantastic and spray into those holes to clean the inside of that “hidden” channel. I then pour hot water into those holes so the cleaner works its way to the drain. Since my sink rarely if ever is filled with enough water so water enters those holes - the channel will dry out and emit a nasty odor. That’s why I occasionally clean it.
Very nice! Thanks for sharing.
thank you for this 🙏
Glad to hear it helped!
Haaa your wood is trash ( bowed and twisted because it’s not properly stacked) Gong
Been doing the simple knot forever now, but recently learned that doing that, especially with more delicate cables, causes structural breakdown (like you mentioned) and imbalance. So, here I am looking for a better way and even the alternative knot option that you showed is a game changer and such a "duh" moment for me. haha. Thanks for sharing this. Gonna have to see if I can find a cord connector for the more delicate cables. Definitely better to have the tension/hold further from the connection points which are already so fragile. Thanks!
I think you summed it up best! Here's to longer living cords!
Hello. Can u explain how I add a phone call from ifttt for a water alert.
Flo dropped their integration with IFTTT about 4 years ago. Phyn never integrated. Both don't really have an incentive to do so since they have their own water sensors to sell and those send texts, email and push notifications (Flo also can give you a call as well). Alexa and Google skills don't really do much that you can't check through the app so that route isn't an option either (it sounds like Flo is also not supporting those integrations as well anymore either although their website still claims it does so YMMV). Let me know if you have other questions.
I love this. I have to run some pex into a crawlspace that's about level with the outside dirt. What size PVC conduit work without a bend putting strain on a 1 inch PEX? I Was thinking of using either 3 or 4 inch through the cinderblock and using a 45 to direct it up so this would (hopefully) be the only time anyone would ever need to dig in the crawlspace.
According to this link the minimum bending radius of 1 inch PEX is 9 inches: www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=www.pexuniverse.com/pex-tubing-technical-specs Not much of a 45 degree angle. Not sure what kind of room you have to work with and if PVC had curves to accout for uses like that.
