Wind Counterpoint
Великобритания
Добавлен 28 дек 2015
This is where you can hear (and see the scores of) my arrangements for wind instruments, many of which are available free on IMSLP.org. Listen before you print! All arrangements have been made in MuseScore and are played back as realistically as possible using a good quality sound font (real sampled instruments) and panning score - with careful attention paid to articulation, dynamics, balance and speed changes. RUclips does not currently support sorting videos by title, so use search on the Videos page (Ctrl or Cmd+F) to find a particular arrangement or composer that you are looking for - or choose from the sections (playlists) either by type of ensemble or period of music. Multi-movement works contain links to other movements within the video description.
Rita Strohl: Thème et Variations for piano, tr. for wind quintet
Rita Strohl (née La Villette) was born in 1865 in Brittany. Her talent got her into the Paris Conservatoire aged only 13, where she overlapped with her older contemporary Mel Bonis. Her early chamber music was rooted in Romanticism and found favour with audiences, critics and publishers: in her words 'I was immersed in a past which alone inspired me'. The death of her first husband from septicaemia in 1900 (when this piece was published) left her with 3 young children and a crisis both personal and musical. 'Amazed, I looked all around myself and saw how life at that moment struck the delicate strings of my harp with an unpadded mallet. I passed from one existence to another without even ...

Fauré - Sicilienne (for Cello or Violin & Piano, tr. for Horn)
Просмотров 74Месяц назад
Gabriel Fauré's evergreen 'Sicilienne' in the version published for cello (or violin) and piano in 1898: cello part transcribed with minimal modifications for horn. Other composers had hands in this piece: Saint-Saëns (previously Fauré's teacher) passed on to him the original (abandoned) theatre music commission (composed in 1893), and Koechlin (one of Fauré's pupils) orchestrated the later (18...

Bartók Dances 1-3 in Bulgarian rhythm (Mikrokosmos). Alkan Airs 1-2 in 5 beats - arr. wind quintet
Просмотров 922 месяца назад
These two sets of pieces in unusual rhythms seem to complement each other. Alkan is known as a virtuoso pianist-composer, but he also wrote other music including a 10-minute mock-tragic funeral march for the death of a parrot (for SSTB, 3 oboes and bassoon), and this set of 4 simple piano Impromptus (published in 1849 as the second collection within Op 32, sometimes called Op 32b): the first 3 ...
Franck Prelude Fugue et Variation arr. for wind quintet
Просмотров 822 месяца назад
The third of Franck's Six pièces pour grand orgue (1862) in an arrangement for quintet. The Prelude and Variation are soothing, almost lullaby-like, while the Fugue subject is long with well contrasted figurations which are very recognizable even where the music is in 3 or 4 parts. All sections show Franck's very characteristic feature of 3- or 4-fold repetition leading back to the same note ea...
Taneyev String Quintet #2 in C (iii - Allegretto) arr. for Wind Octet
Просмотров 303 месяца назад
Sergey Taneyev studied with Tchaikovsky and Nikolai Rubinstein and spent time in Paris in the late 1870s, becoming friendly with most of the best-known composers and novelists. The string quintet in C (with two violas) was written in 1904 and these two inner movements are very attractive. Arrangement available free on imslp.org. Taneyev String Quintet #2 in C (ii - Adagio) arr. for Wind Octet
Просмотров 214 месяца назад
Sergey Taneyev is not a well known name these days, perhaps falling between two stools as a composer who wanted to build Russian music more firmly on European fundamentals. He was an acknowledged authority on Bach and spent 20 years writing a treatise on 'Invertible Counterpoint in the Strict Style'. He studied composition with Tchaikovsky (later becoming his closest musical confidant and criti...
Wolf-Ferrari Suite Concertino for Bassoon arr. wind quintet - iii & iv
Просмотров 686 месяцев назад
The last two movements of Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari's Suite Concertino for solo Bassoon, strings and horns, arranged for wind quintet with the solo part divided between bassoon and cor anglais. The piece is in the old-fashioned 'church sonata' format with four movements, slow-fast-slow-fast, in this case with the emphasis firmly placed on the two operatic cantilena slow movements. The Finale also ha...

Eccard - 2 six-part motets tr. for 6 horns
Просмотров 288 месяцев назад
Two 6-part motets by Johann Eccard (1553-1611) designed for use in the Lutheran church. The first sets the Song of Simeon ('Lord now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace'). This is one of the two canticles prescribed as part of the Anglican Evensong service, so the piece is often sung there in an English translation (you can sing along to a RUclips version by the Gesualdo Six!). The second ...
Grażyna Bacewicz - Oberek from Piano Quintet #1, arr. for 6 wind & piano
Просмотров 219 месяцев назад
Grazyna Bacewicz surmounted many obstacles to become one of Poland's foremost composers, including much time in Warsaw's basements during World War 2, a serious car crash which ended her parallel career as a solo violinist, and simply being a woman in a male-dominated environment. While studying in Paris, Nadia Boulanger set her to compose a wind quintet, which is well worth hearing (try the fo...
Bruhns - 'Great' E minor Prelude, arr. for wind quintet
Просмотров 239 месяцев назад
For me, the north German Baroque created timeless music. The high drama, short sections and constant twists & turns of the Fantasia style - no time for boredom, perfect for the smartphone era. The virtuosity and improvisatory feel, blurring lines between composer and performer - strikingly anticipating jazz. The new independence and power of the organ pedal lines - the 'bass boost' of rock. The...

Rita Strohl (née La Villette) was born in 1865 in Brittany. Her talent got her into the Paris Conservatoire aged only 13, where she overlapped with her older contemporary Mel Bonis. Her early works (including this piece, from 1897) were rooted in Romanticism, but she soon broadened her horizons. In 1898 (three years before Debussy) she set 12 of Pierre Louÿs' Chansons de Bilitis. In 1900 her fi...
Chausson - Quelques Danses (i-iii) arr. for wind quintet
Просмотров 3510 месяцев назад
The dedication music, Sarabande and Pavane from Chausson's 'Quelques Danses' of 1896. A well-off man who was very generous to other composers with both time and money, Chausson suffered from extreme self-doubt and published a relatively small amount of music before tragically crashing his bicycle into a brick wall at the age of 44. His generosity to Albeniz in his youth was amply repaid when in...
Grieg Cello Sonata (iii) arr. for Horn
Просмотров 166Год назад
This third movement of Grieg's 1882-3 cello sonata is a romantic 'blockbuster', with all the stops pulled out in both piano and cello parts for maximum contrast and dramatic effect. I think it also works well for horn with only small modifications, although the movement's length and the upper register writing do make it very tiring. Arrangement of the whole piece available free on IMSLP.org. Fi...

Beethoven Quintet in C Op29 (iv) arr. for wind Octet
Beautiful piece! The flute part could probably be taken up an octave in many sections; melody in the oboe and clarinet can cut through even if the flute is higher in pitch.
Thanks. I have put the flute up an octave where I wanted it to be the leading voice; where it is low it is accompanying and I feel the balance is satisfactory. I think the wind quintet is intrinsically more 'democratic' than the string quartet, and that may mean the flute is in a supporting role more often than it would be in the orchestra.
I love this!! Well done! 😊🎶
nice work
good
I love this! Nice job.
Still one of my favorites!!
Oh my, I thought the day would never come! I have longed for an arrangement of this quintet for winds. Thank you and great job!
1:06 trill is incorrect
Yes - although notated correctly, it is incorrect on playback, because the natural sign is text only. There may be a way around it in MuseScore but my main concern is accuracy in print.
Any chance you could arrange it with saxophones instead of double reeds (soprano and bari)?
Hi, I'm sorry I don't really know enough about saxophones to do that confidently. But I'm now working on the missing slow movement, having decided now to complete the arrangement. When I load that to IMSLP I'll also upload the source music xml files of all movements so that it would be easy for somebody more expert to rearrange for other instruments.
Would you be willing to upload this file to imslp and I could do it?
Third movement added, and all 4 source MuseScore files now uploaded to IMSLP. (If you use a different program, the software to import them is free at Musescore.org and you can then export Music XML files from there to another program).
Awesome! Looks like it's awaiting approval.
Played all three movements last week in our quintet. Excellent! One small issue: One of the pages on IMSLP for the Clarinet part in movement 4 is missing (bars 122-274). It has been replaced on IMSLP by a repeat of an earlier page from movement 1 (bars 97-150). If you see this might you fix that? Thanks again. I know what a mammoth task it is doing one of these arrangements!
Hi, many thanks for pointing this out - fixed now!
