The Sussex Rider - Nick Washington-Jones
Великобритания
Добавлен 1 окт 2011
I've been riding motorcycles since I was 14 and been lucky enough to have travelled all over the world.
I've hired bikes in the US many times plus Australia, New Zealand, Cambodia and I've taken my own bikes to most countries in Europe.
I'm no mechanic so don't expect videos on fixing things!
But with nearly 50 years of riding (I know, I don't look that old ;) I've got a few stories to tell and if my videos inspire just one person to get out there and ride or trave, then I'm a happy man.
Finally, I'm old school so expect straight talking and honest reviews of bikes, equipment and clothing.
Join me for the ride!

Why are motorcycle seats such a pain in the backside?!
It seems that motorcycle manufacturers are making really uncomfortable seats these days! Why is that and what is the solution?

How to put your bike on the centre stand
I have the Halcyon Grey. After 3700 kms it has not missed a beat. I have a couple of short 100kmph roads to get to the next little towns, but most of my riding is done in 50 kmph zones around the beaches in country South Australia. I am 69 years old and for most of my life rode 650 twins, but now I wouldn't swap my classic for anything.
It's a great bike for sure! Good on ya - keep riding and thanks for your comments
I own a Belstaff Trialmaster and have had it now for over 20 years.I love it! But you are correct about the lack of ventilation when warmer weather decides to arrive here in GB.Good review!!
Thanks for your kind words. All the best
I think the manufacturers go for looks more now than they used to, and that's why virtually the first thing to go whenever you get a new bike is the effing seat! On my old Bonny I got a Saddlemen seat (US manufacturer) - I have never been more comfortable on a bike in my life. I could ride that all day without any discomfort, but they stopped making them for Triumph after about 2017 I think it was, and since then I've never been really comfortable on any of my bikes. I've tried the 'Comfort' versions the manufacturers make. I've had a seat re-upholstered by a company that specializes in doing just that. And I've tried after-market seat manufacturers like Sergeant and Air Hawks etc. etc. - none of them make any real difference. There's only one other guy in our Ulysses group that uses an Air Hawk and he swears by them. I found I wobbled a bit on them and they added too much to the height of the bike for me. They sure are a conundrum!! For an adventure or touring bike you want to be able to do at least six hours in the saddle I would have thought, 3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon sort of thing, and with the bikes I've recently had I'm really struggling after 2 hours! I don't know the answer to this, but one thing is for sure - the manufacturers have given themselves big new sales avenues for the bikes they sell us.
Excellent comment - thank you. I don't think we are alone in finding this am issue with so many bikes these days. I hadn't thought about your point about "looks over comfort" but that's another reason for sure. You would think that these big brands would test ride bikes on long journeys without stopping just to see what the seats are really like! It's also interesting that motorcycle youtubers who test ride bikes don't seem to mention seat comfort other than "it's ok on the short time that I had it!" I'd like people to take 3 or 4 hour rides and tell us how it really feels. I'll update everyone re the Oxford Air seat when I've tried it. Let's hope it works for my backside's sake!
Kawasaki should build a KLR650 based Retro bike.
Agreed - "let the good times roll"
Great IF you have a centre stand.
This is great 👍🏼 Keep them coming Nick!
Thank you! Good to know people are enjoying them 👍🙏
Good story. I appreciate it! 😂
Thanks :)
And no intention of repaying the defrauded customers ?
Seems not. Just not right

I wanted the 120th edition Gt 650 but couldn’t get it , so instead I got the Mr clean Gt650
I've seen a few for sale lately but not that many. You got a great bike for sure. Cheers
I've never been without a motorcycle, because I've never sold my first one which I now have almost 30 years. I did buy other bikes and sold them. I have had times when I didn't ride due to numerous reasons. Right now I'm in the process of bringing this first bike (or more accurate motor scooter) back on the road. Already bought the parts to bring the engine back to life. :)
Good man and great story. Too many of us sold our bikes in the early days and now really regret it! Post a pic of yours when it's up and running. Cheers
@@thesussexrider Thanks. True, I sold my Zündapp moped and a Bella scooter, which I really regret. But you can't keep everything, at the time they stood in my parents' garage and they needed the space also. At least I kept this Vespa, I will post a small video when it's running.
10 years, 3 young kids, not earning well (Fire Service) went back to it at 40, now 69 and still biking
I think we all go through that stage don't we?! Good man re still riding. I'm looking for my next bike. Thanks for sharing
That must have been a tough time, and it still is of course. It's obvious that making videos for RUclips is then the last priority. But good to notice that you have some good things coming up. Best wishes Nick!
Thank you for your kind words - they really are much appreciated. 🙏🙏
Thanks for sharing, very tough times mate😕 Better times ahead hopefully All the best 👍🏍️
Thanks - much appreciated. Yes, better times ahead hopefully. Looking forward to South America in January. That should focus me even more!
It's tough losing people that are close. For us, it underlines the need to make the most of the time you have. Do the big trips while you're healthy enough. I think you're already doing that. Carol & I see our trip RUclips vids a little like diaries that we can flip though later in life. Glad you are back making vids. Cheers best wishes and take care.
Thanks for your kind words - they mean a lot. That's a good way of thinking about making your videos and echoes what my son said recently. Enjoy your holiday
You haven't done a clip in a long time Nick! I thought you'd given up?
Thanks - I did stop for a year due to personal reasons but I'm back at it now. Thanks for sticking around - it's really very much appreciated. Lots to come including my journey from Santiago in Chile down to Ushuaia in January. 🙏🙏
2 yrs - 125 then 84K - Hats off !
I know - I thought the same! Two years on a 125cc only in Germany (by law) and then thousands of miles on the Yamaha! Top man.
It sounds a brilliant adventure. I've just turned 60 myself and it has highlighted the need to do these big trips while health is still with you. Good luck to both of you.
Thanks. I've been lucky in that I've done quite a few but this is a bigger for sure. Very exciting!
Natural story teller, keep the adventures going, looking forward to more content!
Great to see your channel back up Nick! And yes, life should always be an adventure... Good for you!
Thanks Simon
It's nice to hear the channel is still going and evolving. Personally, we love watching and making motorcycle travel and touring vids.
Thanks and good to hear from you :). I took a year off and it's time to get back at it! All the best
just got of these for a steal off vinted and I don't ride a bike!
Smart move. They are great looking jackets and oh so waterproof!
Thanks for the review! I got a killer deal: the Macna -> leather heated gloves, heated jacket and heated pants for 440 Euro!
Thanks Nick - appreciate you taking the time to write. And what a deal!! Enjoy
Its very frustrating when researching jacket reviews, don't give their height & size of jacket. Many of us overseas & cant try on jackets of different sizes. I did go thru the comments to find the jacket is a - Large & yes you did tell us your height & weight. Good review.
Thanks Derek - I appreciate your kind words. All the best
so did you get your new bike?
Thanks for asking - I'm waiting for a certain make and model to be launched this year! As soon as it's available I'll let everyone know. Cheers. Nick
That angle pocket is a map pocket
Yes I think it was put at that angle for that reason (so you can get the map out easily) but it's very small! Cheers
Great review
Thank you
Just got Halcyon Grey, first time I pulled too hard on the right arm and pulled a shoulder muscle. Next time I'll be better at it.
They are beautiful bikes for sure. Hope your shoulder is ok. Cheers. Nick
It's just one cylinder?
The website says single cylinder. It's not my bike - I've always been a Triumph Bonneville man (back in the day) so prefer twin cylinder motorcycles. Cheers
rubbish helmet so noisy i got rid of it ... pos.... ARAI is the only brand worth buying
I'm actually a big Shoei fan but this one is noisy above 50mph for sure. You definitely need ear plugs!
What part of the glove has the heat elements. Top bottom fingers thumb? Thanks
It's been so mild that I haven't worn them for a while. I can't recall where the elements are and a look at the Macna website doesn't help either! All I can say is that they are really comfortable and definitely keep your hands warm. If you are winter riding I'd get a pair for sure. Cheers
6 minutes in to actually see the helmet.
Thank you very much for this video. I rode a very big bike with 160 hp and all I ever saw all the time, were the few meters road in front of me. I changed to a big enduro and it was getting better a little bit. Now I am ready for the next step I think : Royal Enfield 350 Classic. You gave me the confirmation. Thank you. Cheers and greetings from Germany.
Thank you for your kind words. I am sure you will love the Enfield and really appreciate the slower pace and feeling a part of something rather that just rushing so fast everywhere. Best wishes. Nick
HI BUDDY I BOUGHT IT 5 DAYS BEFOE , HOW MUCH MILEAGE ITS GIVE FOR 1 LITRE ?.
Hey there, I'm so sorry I can't help you with this one. Except to say that you get a lot of smiles per litre! Enjoy
I am planning to get this as my first bike..This exact colour is my favourite it looks amazing. Seems to be heavy as a first bike,i hope thats not an issue.. Great video!!
Many thanks and I'm sure you are going to love the bike! Best colour ;)
Having just caught up with this glamster review i was wondering how you got on putting speakers in the recess in the helmet. Having tried one on recently there didn't seem much room. Cheers
Good question! All I can say is that I wear glasses and ear plugs when riding and both are not an issue with this helmet. Inside there are resesses either side so I think there would be room for speakers. Additionally, I belive that you can get different sized linings - speak with Motolegends or Urban rider to check that.
Better. Superior. Awsome. Me and my brother got one each. Brilliant. Goes along side my A7 and Lightening. Amongst other modern bikes.
I have the same jacket and use it occasionally for rides. My biggest worry though is the very light/small armour and the lack of evidence that the fabric will endure a crash.
I had a quick look at the Motolegends website and they list it as AA armour. To be fair it's something I didn't consider - I just bought it on the looks! My biggest "moan" is that it doesn't breathe and is just too hot for me when it's sunny and above 25 or 26c. Luckily living in the UK this isn't a major problem! Cheers
😀👍
Thanks for the review. I didn’t like the price much but having looked at literally hundreds of jackets, I think this one is worth the investment. I’m enjoying your channel and I like your proper reviews (as in: you actually use the gear) and I hope you do some more gear reviews. Anyway, I subscribed today. Have fun. Cheers👍
Hi and thanks for your kind words. Both the Belstaff jacket and the Shoei Glamster helmet are great! I've not been very active this year since my brother passed away - I just lost the drive to do anything really. But with time and your kind words along with what many others have said has helped me get through this and I plan to do more next year. Best wishes. Nick
@@thesussexrider I’m very sorry to hear that your brother has passed away. Especially at this time of year. I hope you have friends and family that you are able to speak to. Its a tough time for you. I wish you the strength to get through this.
How does the power supply work? Im interested to buy the gloves but how do they get the power? Where do the cables lead to?
Macna offer different styles and battery options. Because I had the jacket I bought the gloves which attach to the jacket and then the battery is in my pocket. I like this because when I'm off the bike and walking around (like at a freezing cold Christmas market) then I can unplug the gloves and just plug in the jacket to keep my core warm. The alternative is to attach the cables direct to the battery in the motorcycle (very easy job) and then plug in the jacket. The gloves then connect to the jacket. If you want the gloves only then I would go for the Macna ones that hold the small batteries on the back of the gloves. Otherwise you have to feed the cable from the battery up through your jacket and down your sleeves. My son did this for two winter seasons with a pair of Richi heated gloves and he was OK with it. Not sure where you are based but the guys at Motolegends near Guildford are really helpful if you need advice. Cheers
Bought new .. love mine .
I heard BSA still make mid level telescopic sights for rifles plus they were making bikes in Nigeria with Yamaha engines but probably not for export? I'm 'old school' and had real Royal Enfield's, 1965 Continental GT, Crusaders, etc.
I didn't know that about them still making telescopic sights - that's cool if it's for real. Plus the Yamaha engines in Nigeria. I'll try and find out through my network. Post a pic of your old RE bikes - people would love to see them. Cheers
Thanks for this! Thinking of getting the Foton 2.0 Macnas for winter riding in Poland. This review helped a lot! 🎉
Glad it was helpful! They really make a difference! Cheers
Great stories. Looking forward to seeing more of your trips - I need more ideas of local places to take my bike.
Thank you for saying so - it's really much appreciated. Cheers. Nick
Little gem….She did well on her way home Nick, it’s me who should’ve brought warmer clothes 😂
Great to hear that. She's got a lovely engine and it should last for many years. Should have taken me up on having an old sweatshirt lol. Enjoy my friend.
I did regret not taking your kind/wise offer 😅
Keep your videos coming, your stories are an inspiration. 🤙
@@vogahl34 I agree 👍
It would be better if it had a Suzuki 650 Savage motorcycle engine in it.Much better looking motor. The Old Rotax Matchless repo was much better than the so called BSA.
that is one snazzy fuel tank
Sure is. Cheers
It's a pretty bike, not very practical but I could see where someone may enjoy washing and polishing all the chrome then standing back & admiring the shinny thing. For the money, I'd go with the Moto Guzzi V7 though. You'd get two cylinders a truly air cooled engine more horsepower and torque, 4 piston front caliper 2 piston rear (vs the bsa 2/1 setup, a 21 liter fuel tank (vs 12) for day long range, shaft final drive, 6 speed transmission, a comfortable molded seat, tubeless tires - a true mile muncher when a windscreen and a tail bag are added + a blast to push in mountains. Hand built in Mandela Delario along beautiful Lake Como in Italy where you are cordially invited to visit annually.
I know exactly what you men. I recently bought a V7II to ride to work on but it is just too much fun just for daily duties & now gets ridden everywhere... Which is why I can see a Gold Star in my future. I already love the engine (I had an F650 BMW a while back) & it would be perfect for the ride up the hill to the office, which would leave the Guzzi for weekend blasts through the hills. Win/win!
Well done for thinking “ inside “ the box …sensible , practical , and unemotional !
